Back to heartbreak. Goodness, why would I ever write about anything else?!

I hope you enjoy the song!

EXCUSES AND LIES

Words & Music

In the quiet corners
of our shared bedroom,
Where the shadows try
to hide the growing doubt,
Your words fall like
rain on an old tin roof,
But they don’t drown
the real truth out.

CHORUS:
EXCUSES AND LIES,
sugar-coated pain,
You say it’s nothing,
but it is everything.
When you whisper in the night,
it's my heart that’s strained,
EXCUSES AND LIES,
and the hurt remains.

I remember laughter,
now it’s just a sigh,
You can't meet my eyes
when you speak.
The distance keeps on growing,
though you're right beside,
And I'm guessing we both
wonder what we'll keep.

CHORUS:
EXCUSES AND LIES,
sugar-coated pain,
You say it’s nothing,
but it is everything.
When you whisper in the night,
it's my heart that’s strained,
EXCUSES AND LIES,
and the hurt remains.

Is there something real
behind the mask you wear?
Can we ever find forgiveness,
or has it left somewhere?
Or are we just a memory,
fading oh so fast,
Lost in the echoes
of our dishonest past?

Is it too late to start over?
Is there truth behind your eyes?
Am I just another escape
from the life that you despise?
So here we stand,
at the crossroads, my dear,
Do we walk on together,
or disappear?

CHORUS:
EXCUSES AND LIES,
sugar-coated pain,
You say it’s nothing,
but it is everything.
When you whisper in the night,
it's my heart that’s strained,
EXCUSES AND LIES,
and the hurt remains.

Nice sweet melody and catchy hook - instantly hum-able (in a good way)

Some really great lines in this and the vocals and music excel...almost worth having your heart broken in order to write this so well...er, maybe...

I can see this so clearly because of those great descriptions! Incredible production and performance!

Don't back away from heartbreak songs, Jerry. You're a master of the genre, so make the most of it. Keep giving us "sugar-coated pain" and we'll keep listening.

now this is what i hear as a Dylanesque song. Could be an out take from Blood on the Tracks. Some really good lines here, and I appreciate the lack of a solo. for me, a solo often disrupts the pacing of the lyric, I like hearing one verse and chorus after another without interruption.

Brilliant scene-setting opening verse! Love the lyrics there. Also love the way you’re controlling the dynamics going into and out of the choruses, particularly those huge string swells toward the end. Definitely a keeper here, even if the relationship described isn’t!

@sbs
Exquisite lyrics - a master of heartbreak. Nice production the way the verses pop and the music pulls back.
