Hi, I'm Brooklyn-based ukulele player and teacher Jenny Selig (she/her) and I joined my first round of FAWM in February 2023 and then did my first 50/90! With a background in poetry, theater, and performance, I have been sharing ukulele-based songwriting on social media and in-person since 2018. #fuc #ukulele

All my original songs end up here: http://tinyurl.com/seligsongs

My favorite made-up genres to write in:
šŸ’€ Americanasati - Americana infused with philosophical meditations on mortality and dread. (Americana + Maranasati)
🐿 MidEmFoke - Midwestern Emotional Folk uke

--

October 2 50/90 final stats:
The count is 177 on my profile but 8 are duplicate entries by musicians/singers interpreting my lyrics, so I wrote:
* 169 songs total
* I’ve done video demos for 55 of these (1 was a cowrite on the melody)
* I also did 1 10x10 and 1 Exquisite Corpse
* I posted 3 video demo collabs in which I wrote music around someone else’s lyrics
* My lyrics were interpreted by another musician 10 times
* Which means I have 109 lyrics-only drafts remaining, most of which I will eventually finish and demo (maybe all!)
* Total collabs: 14 posted (and 1 still in-progress)

A note on collaborations: I had so much fun hearing what others are coming up with on some of my lyrics-only drafts, and am honored anyone would take the time! I might also create my own solo, acoustic versions of any of those songs later, and the melody might be different, which doesn’t mean I didn’t like the music someone else created around them.

Thank you for commenting on my song!
[avatar]
Are you ok for it to go live then?? At the end of the day… ??
[avatar]
Those are incredible stats!!! I can't even quite get my brain around how that even happens. Brava!!!
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment on "The Apostate." Glad you liked the composition. :)
[avatar]
Hey! Just saw your comment on my Minnesota Construction song -- I was excited to see the comparison to Wet Leg! I adore their music!! :)
[avatar]
FYI I have just uploaded the track to thos dong you say you’d be interested in https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/30454. I’d certainly be interested in your feedback - it was improvised so please don’t expect perfection. Ha that’s funny since the track is called ā€˜ I am not a perfect one’
[avatar]
Phew I’m glad you like my version of ā€˜Satan,no!!!) sorry you had to wait so long. šŸ˜€
[avatar]
Hi Jenny - I’ve just uploaded my ( one of about twenty attempts ouch!!)!version of satan ..
[avatar]
That's kind of you to extend thanks to songwriting partners who worked with the words you provided. I think I only got to do one of yours, but I appreciate your willingness to let me give my choice of lyrics a shot. As a lyric writer, I am very slow, but, given a good set of lyrics from someone like you, I can devise the music very quickly. I am indebted to the lyricists of FAWM because, of the 32 songs I posted, 29 made use of lyrics from people who found their strength in the words. In short, without the lyricists of FAWM, I would have precious little to present.
[avatar]
Thank you to everyone who collaborated with me in my first 50/90! What a thrill! @kahlo2013 @esqjr3 @barbara @mahtowin @sheslin @paul_pedersen @sdcpaman @allaboutgeorge @florianhoffmann @metalfoot @tunecat @jtsteam @jlampson !! Hope I didn't miss anyone. Can't wait to see what happens in February (and I'll be around here until they kick us out).

Thank you, too, to all who left thoughtful and encouraging comments, who watched/listened to/read my drafts, and to the folks who kept the Slack channel going when the Forum got quiet (and vice versa). Hugest thanks to those who built and run this site -- I'm new here, so I didn't experience it "before" and I'm sure it was magical, but this is so well designed it makes it even more rewarding and fun to participate. xoxo thanks for the welcome to FAWM and 50/90.
[avatar]
Hi Jenny! I just sent you via your email the 10 sec clip for the exquisite corpse… hoping you can send me a short song (about 1 min) that I can add and post! I would love to post by Saturday afternoon as it is the last day and I am hoping people have a listen to it. Your style of uke and vocals will be a perfect addition!!! If you are unable to do it let me know so I am not waiting for it. Thanks a million!!!!!!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for the feedback, everything I've been making lately kept turning out cinematic so I just started leaning in to it.
[avatar]
Thank you for the listen/comment on "Come Out And Play" (and for picking a skirmish topic that let me run with a Halloween song šŸ˜€)

Funny story on the ending....it never occurred to me that I would need one....until I ran out of words, and realized I was there šŸ˜†
(an hour is apparently enough time for me to sketch out some lyrics and chords..but not to actually practice all of it...)
[avatar]
Haha--I bet we watch some of the same songwriting videos! I didn't think about it, but I also recently saw that Ed Sheeran example (or one of them--he probably gets a lot).
[avatar]
@greengrassgirl - jenny is the talented one.
[avatar]
Jenny, You're right! I was confusing you with @yewnorker. Sorry!
[avatar]
Hi, Jenny, I just saw in the Forum posts that you are also on musesongwriters.com. I did a search for your FAWM name there, but didn't find it. What is your Muse handle? I'd like to follow you. (Or maybe I already do, and just didn't know it was you.) I am Peko on muse songwriters.com.
[avatar]
Jenny! Thanks for you kind words on my song The Fallout.
[avatar]
Thanks! Congratulations on a brilliant run. A treble-plus. Unbelievable.
[avatar]
@igg1
Thank you for your kind comments on A Song For The Both Of Us. I've written a tune for it but won't have time to post it here.....
[avatar]
Hi Jenny. Thanks for spending an autumn day checking out "Summer's Wasted on Me".
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to and reviewing "The End". Agreed I'm not the most intricate lyricist (if that title applies at all) when it comes to English texts (being stuck at a tiny planet, far far away in a distant part of the universe where "borky-bork bork" are the normal sound we utter).
[avatar]
Thanks for your recent comments. I'm pretty much done with 50/90 but glad there are some of you out there still going strong!
[avatar]
Hi, thanks a lot! :) The song was performed live, so the background voices are just people in the audience :)
[avatar]
Thanks for your listen, your noticing, and...HOLY FAWM! You've been busy! Congrats on your triple win and counting šŸ†
[avatar]
Jenny, Thanks for coming back and commenting on Father Mike. That was a fun collab, and working with Eric was a pleasure. I'm glad you liked V2...it was my favorite verse, too.
[avatar]
Thanks for the listen and comment on my latest collab with Tammy, 'Set Sail'!
[avatar]
Hi Jenny,

Thank you for your kind words on the lyrics "The book of my life"

Keep shining our star :)
[avatar]
Hi, Jenny, That's an impressive list of songs you have here. My fingers are tired from scrolling and scrolling to finally get to your Soundboard! šŸ˜€ I came here to thank you for your comments on Memories Are Everywhere, my collab with @ohdeer and @moptop. It was an easy working relationship and we are all pleased with how it turned out. Thanks for letting us know you enjoyed it.

Oh! You also commented on City of Angels, another 3-way collab, this time with @joeym and @Natalie. That was another one that just came together so well and we are all happy with it. So glad you liked it. I have never driven through Nebraska on a starry summer night, but that's how I imagined it. I'm glad it resonated with you.
[avatar]
Wow, 161 songs! You haven't been sleeping here. And thanks for caring for hedgehogs, and giving some kind words to the Hidden Hedgehog!
[avatar]
Thanks a lot for listening and commenting on "Petals". So happy you enjoyed! I should also check the thread when I find some time for listening. And congrats to winning this challenge. 160 songs are a lot!
[avatar]
Thank you for commenting on ā€œThe Journey I Love.ā€ I am working on making my backing tracks more sophisticated, but I’m not sure when that will happen. My message is in the lyrics, but I’m getting encouragement to further develop the music.
[avatar]
Ok. That’s great. I’ll upload it as a separate one ( I’ll look for it first! And tell you when I’ve done it.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your insightful comment on ā€œThe Day That Elvis Died.ā€ So appreciated!
[avatar]
Thanks fir so maaaaany comments on my stuff. I dk have a rendition ( one of many takes ) of your song . I’m struggling with email and everything tech related at no. Can just about upload to here. Would you be ok if I did that and if you hated tge ding I’d take it down or something ?
[avatar]
Hey, thank you for all your comments and support on the stuff I write and post here at the site. I appreciate it much. Regarding 'Leaves Fall" and what I had in mind musically, you said you were curious about, here's a favorite of mine that inspired it on the link below and what I had in mind musically.

Thanks so much for the comment on my skirmish/reunion song. Some of my friends will be wearing blazers but I'll be wearing my Vans. 🤘
[avatar]
Congrats on the 150+ songs! I haven't been doing many skirmishes but I saw your one on keep it light and the note Paul gave Jimmy. So Good!
[avatar]
You are very welcome. Thank you for so many encouraging comments.
[avatar]
I loved that you mentioned the Grannies at your church singalong in the context of the Dangerous getting old song. I was thinking of you earlier this week in talking over with a friend ways our church could reenergize in the post Covid world. I thought about making space for people in transition: new parents, new partners, new retirees, etc, and making space for making music, and thought that people would love a sing along or play along like the ones you lead. I'd love to get together sometime in Manhattan or Brooklyn and talk music and church stuff, if you'd be up for it.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on ā€œOrchardā€. The sounds you called cow bell was actually my dish of applesauce. It made a nice ting and I got an interesting phase effect as I turned my spoon scraping it across the bottom.
[avatar]
For the record ā€˜soul’ not ā€˜souk’ poetic though that may sound!!
[avatar]
Thanks for getting back to me !
[avatar]
Question and favor - I am doing a music morph (changing the lyrics/music) from a previous song. I wrote lyrics for the morph I need to do and the song is relevant for today (Sept 11) but I am in meetings for work until late tonight - any chance you would have the time or interest in doing a collab with a rough music demo? If so shoot me an email and I’ll send you the lyrics.
[avatar]
Thanks for listening and commenting on "Drift Away." I'm glad you liked it!
[avatar]
You are so prolific and it's all quality stuff. Color me impressed! Thx for the nice comments.
[avatar]
Hey thx your lyric inspired my My big mistake lyric you are having a fantastic FAWM
[avatar]
You are welcome. There are many genres in 3/4. Good luck with the demo.
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out my skirmish song ā€˜Violet rocks’ for the record I do not hold anti- purple sentiments I was just following a light hearted trail of pro violet- ness to see where it went. The violet faeries made me say all those things!
[avatar]
You are very welcome. Thank You for all your beautiful comments.
[avatar]
I had to take some time away to focus on work and will likely not be online here as much this month due to some major deadlines - but I will continue to try to read/listen to your work as I can as I really love your writing and music - and I truly appreciate your many comments! My Almost Famous lyric is totally autobiographical!
[avatar]
Thanks for your observation on "Jenny". I just couldn't get any workable ideas for music to go with it. (I seem to be having more trouble than usual with that this time in 50/90)
[avatar]
Thank you for your regular stops with nugget feedback. Congratulations on your 50!
[avatar]
Thanks for touching base on Mystic Hour. I am still very excited to see where it takes you!
[avatar]
I really liked your tale of how you and your husband met and finally came together. That was a great performance too, full of sly smiles and gestures to underline the lines.
[avatar]
I have done a few tries doing a version o f Satan no! I think we corresponded about this) My voice isn’t super and it hasn’t ā€˜settled’ yet so each version has good and bad points .. can i send you a choice and see which one you like?? ( and if you want I could do just a piano backing track so you could sing??)
[avatar]
Thanks for the comment on the suffering skirmish lyric - I oscillated between I and you … and started with I … and then it felt like it was all about me … so then I changed it to you and it felt like I was pointing fingers - I’m wondering if I can weave in more ā€œweā€ā€¦. Hmmmm… anyway, always really appreciate your comments and am so impressed with your music and musings!
[avatar]
Also, my comments were meant to be funny. Not critical. I hope that's how they were seen.
[avatar]
You are very welcome. Thank you for your generous comments and support.
[avatar]
Thanks for your thoughtful comments on my songs. It’s greatly appreciated.
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind comments on "To Live" – I enjoyed approaching the song that way rather than trying to write a biography or something. I'm glad you liked it!
[avatar]
dammit you’re killing this 50/90 thing. I’ve got no beef with Myrtle. I just think your depth of knowledge probably exceeds that of most. Maybe a footnote is in order. That might even be a wedding song first. See Appendix
[avatar]
Thanks so much for taking the time to listen and comment on my song!
[avatar]
Thank you for the insightful comments on so many of my songs. I am humbled and very much appreciative.
[avatar]
Just a shout out on a lyric I wrote several weeks ago, you expressed an interest in hearing once it was set to music. Well, the time is here.
https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/30533
[avatar]
Thank you for the comments on several of my songs! Cold tea drinkers unite! (when we remember that's what we were doing... *laughs*)
[avatar]
Thank you again for your generous comments and for sharing your thoughts with me.
[avatar]
Are you a machine?? Not onky havd you doubled the already to most people ridiculously ambitious challenge but you have outstripped us all in comments. They are also incredibly well thought out and helpful. And in addition you remember to thank everyone who comments. You have my enduring respect ( oh snd your songs are pretty good too !!!)
[avatar]
yup i got that :-) also its a standard joke line in our house "we will always have Paris" i guess i have to write that song sometime in fact i cant believe i haven't
[avatar]
You are very welcome. Thank you for your support.
[avatar]
Glad you don't feel worried about Honky Tonks, maybe NYC is a less paranoid place (believe it or not) than some areas of the Bible Belt or California šŸ˜‰
[avatar]
102 songs and it's only August 24! Excellent work.
[avatar]
Have you ever written a soundboard comment and then navigated away before you submitted it and then it’s gone? That just happened.
I came here to say that no one has spoken for ā€˜Mystic Hour’ and I would be truly delighted for you to put your touch on it! I’ve gone ahead and added a note on the song page that you are currently working with it. I’m fine with any kind of modifications you might want to make, including changing the title if you like. I hope you have a great time. I’m so looking forward to hearing what you come up with!
[avatar]
I dint know what to say. You’ve been so kind and checked out every one ( or so it seems ) of my songs. I appreciate but enormously. Your sensitive feedback is helpful and it feels like a gesture of friendship. Not sure if I can catch up and reciprocate with all yours but I still want resto stop by .
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your wonderful comment on my Teddy Bear song. Much appreciated!
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind comments on my collab with @squeakmouse73, "The Old Bed". Much appreciated! :-)
[avatar]
"The Circle" is not made up (sadly)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Circle_(American_TV_series)
I got it in a Skirmish in which for the prompt you had to hit wiki's random page generator for inspiration. I thought I had never seen it, but reading about it realised my daughter had forced me to watch an episode a couple of years back.
Torture...
[avatar]
You are just slaying this 5090. Amazing number of songs and comments. Thank you so much for all the comments you have made on my page.
[avatar]
Some day I'll catch up. The past 13 hours I found out I have to move and my new Grandson arrived.
[avatar]
Thank you for listening to all my stuff and commenting. That made my day because I love your stuff and your sense of melody and clever lyrics. So thank you again. How have you written 100 songs? WOW!!!! Impressive!
[avatar]
I'm pleased that you are happy with "Baptists and Bootleggers". Thanks for letting me have fun with your lyrics.
[avatar]
Hi Jenny - I just posted Baptists and Bootleggers. If you email me at ppedersen1111@gmail,com, I'll send you the audio file and the lyric/chord sheet so you can play it on your uke.
[avatar]
Thank you for all of your thoughtful and kind comments. They mean the world to me! And I have been amazed at your prolific productivity, skirmish contributions, and all of your comments and notes! Impressive participation! I need to catch up on commenting!
[avatar]
I would like to put some music to your lyric The View From Here if that is okay with you.
[avatar]
It's been a while now, but I want to say again how much I appreciate you taking the time to listen to and comment on my songs!

Wow, 85 songs so far, that's a massive achievement! Chapeau!

Have a nice weekend!
[avatar]
If it’s ok with you I’m working on a setting of ā€˜Satan,no’
[avatar]
72 songs! Incidentally I had to look up what a s'more is sounds delicious albeit a little fattening, and I found a recipe on the internet for "English s'mores" which are exactly as you describe.
[avatar]
You are very welcome. Congratulations with so many brilliant songs! Thank you for your kind comments!
[avatar]
Just realized i made a mistake with the last line šŸ™ˆšŸ™ˆšŸ™ˆ i hope its ok for you this way?
[avatar]
I am so glad you like it! šŸ˜€šŸ™šŸŒˆ
[avatar]
70 songs! Great work, well done.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for all the commenting! I really really appreciate your kind words and encouragement. Thank you.
[avatar]
The cameo in my video is made by a fly that lands on the kalimba for a split second. It is also reflected in the kalimba's tines shortly before it lands.
[avatar]
Hi! Thanks for listening and commenting on the synth pieces I recorded last night. I'm glad you enjoyed them! It is so much fun to play!
[avatar]
Thank you for your kind comments!!!! šŸ˜„
[avatar]
Well done on passing 50 songs!
[avatar]
Congratz on the win. And thank you for the comment on "When The Night." I'm glad to hear you appreciated the openness of the lyric as that was a deliberate intention on my part.
[avatar]
Omg you did it! (I know your ambition is not yet sated but 50 songs is 50 songs!)
[avatar]
Hey New York, congrats on hitting 50+ songs already! You are rocking this challenge! And thanks so much for your kind words on my efforts so far.
[avatar]
Congratulations on 50 songs (and wow in 38 days)!
[avatar]
Wow! You’re really closing on the goal! Thanks for your thoughtful and non-generic comments. I appreciate it.
[avatar]
Thank you for listening and commenting on We Are the Ocean. Glad you liked it! 😁
[avatar]
Of course you may have very specific issues with season 3 that aren’t going to simply dissolve with a rewatch, but for me it offers such a sincere attempt to continue the story, while also offering a commentary on the difficulty and dangers of doing so. The first watch isn’t going to be optimal because you will have hopes and expectations it is very hard to meet. They have gone for a rewatch and you can start to address it as it is.
[avatar]
I have shiny things on the way embarrassingly often :). Thanks for your comment!
[avatar]
Jenny thanks you for your comments on Not Even Close! I am working hard on production and trying to build a whole song arc. I still love one take freshly written guitar song, but I am enjoying learning the production side of the house. I really appreciate you giving me feedback on it.
[avatar]
Thanks for the nice comment. I might have been leaning into pre-emotive self-recrimination there! It is hard trying to make an interesting song without resorting to tricks and shiny things. I’m burnt out with this guitar and voice thing already… I don’t know how you do it!
[avatar]
Thank you for your comments on my songs Caramel Nation Dreaming and Savage Lands. I appreciate them!
[avatar]
I don’t know if I’ve actually popped by to say how much I appreciate your comments. Thanks so much: really warm, affirming and positive.
[avatar]
Thx for your comment on my interpretation of psalm. Nice to meet you
[avatar]
Ooooh I can not pass up tasty lyrics like these! I will give it a go. Let me know if there is a reference song you had in mind when writing, or a song you think would be a good reference. sheslin1@yahoo.com
I will email a rough draft when I get one - I have 3 collabs I need to finish first. Thanks so much Jenny!
[avatar]
I got your postcard in the mail today. Thank you.
[avatar]
Thank you. I'm so pleased!
[avatar]
Thank you! One day I might catch up to comment more. Right now my sweet Grandson is here from Georgia.
[avatar]
Glad you gave my "Ant" song a look in. This harks back to my childhood in Africa when we were the giant's children messing around with the ant columns (and occasionally getting stung by formic acid on the huge black guards of the colony).
[avatar]
FAWM is the perfect place for stepping out of your comfort zone!!
[avatar]
I'm glad you liked "19th 50/90 Song" -- gots ta keep it going! Thanks for listening.
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out Music Becomes a Lover. I'm having fun with the cinematic vibes in this set.
[avatar]
Thanks for listening and commenting on "My Glass House" - the guitar part was a fun exercise and I'm glad it worked out well!
[avatar]
Thanks for the listen and comment on Monolith!
[avatar]
Thanks for your feedback on Guitar Joe, I appreciate it 😊
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on Numinous šŸ¤“
[avatar]
Many thanks for the listen and like on Wicked Soup.
[avatar]
Hi Jenny, Re: Last. I'm kind of relieved you liked the flow. I wasn't sure how it would go over. Thank you very much.
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out Every Day is a New Beginning šŸ¤“
[avatar]
Mea culpa (says Alex). I think I've fixed it. I was trying to do 2 different things and broke the links to the songs along the way. Try again to listen to M's stuff!
[avatar]
You are very kind! Thank you for the listen and the lovely feedback. šŸ˜„
[avatar]
Thanks for dropping by for a listen to The Devil Holds the Throttle and for the encouraging comment.
[avatar]
Thank you for listening to "Endless Possibilities" - getting one to "bop along" is always a goal šŸ˜€
[avatar]
Listening to your lovely voice and interesting songs id a highlight for me of 50/90. You are just a joy.
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind words.
[avatar]
Thank you for stopping by for "Untitled Song."
[avatar]
Thanks, again.
[avatar]
Thanks and yeah it could be punk for sure!
[avatar]
Wow that's very low for an uke!
[avatar]
Thanks for your lovely comments on "My Past".
[avatar]
Thanks for your wonderful comment on "On the Seas of Cheese." I seem to be finding a great many Primus fans here!
[avatar]
Thanks for the comment on Let Me Rise!
[avatar]
Congratulations on your graduation from FAWMling status and one month in being over 2/3 of the way to 50!
[avatar]
...and OMG: Americana sati. YESSS
[avatar]
Yeah, the picnic skirmish. Thankyou for listening. I was attempting to channel Tom Waits or Gil Scott-Heron but I think I landed on stage at open mic night for a poetry slam. But I AM having a lot of fun
[avatar]
You have posted 38 songs and it's only August 5! Great work and every one of those songs is excellent.
[avatar]
Thank you Jenny, for your comment on my 'sequel song' skirmish entry, "I Could Not". As far as that original song from 1992 goes, that touch of 'sadness' you detected in the vocals... when I stated dating the girl that song was written for, she had lost her older brother in a car accident only a couple of months prior. Her whole world was turned upside-down, and in retrospect, it was probably a crazy, ill-advised time for her to enter into a relationship. So, either you're hearing some of that situation in my voice, or it was just a lackluster vocal performance lol. Both are possible.

Still no demo for the sequel. I'll let you know if that changes, but I'm feeling a little underwhelmed by the way I'm hearing it in my head, and am trying to come up with an arrangement that I like more. Thanks again!
[avatar]
The Aristotle bit was my favorite too! šŸ˜„ Thank you!
[avatar]
And thanks also for commenting on "This Guy’s In Love With You!"
[avatar]
Thank you for your supportive comments on "I've Heard This Song Before." It was a fun song to work up.
[avatar]
I'm glad you like the lyrics on "Crumple Zone (Bad Song Club)" - it doesn't make you a #badperson! But it might make me bad at writing bad songs! Thank you!
[avatar]
Thanks for commenting on "Nothing Happened" - relationships in limbo are good lyric fodder!
[avatar]
Thanks for the comment on the Texas song collab with Nancy. You said "country twang" ha ha! Thank you. That's the natural Texan accent that just pops out anytime I sing country music. šŸ˜€
[avatar]
Thank you for your kind comments on Married to the Blues and We Are the Ocean, I'm really glad you liked them 😁
[avatar]
Thank you for all of your very kind comments - the clipart thing struck me as a good bit of subversion - took about 20 minutes to make on Canva - wish I had more time to do that sort of thing more seriously & better. :)
[avatar]
Thanks for your advice and ideas re recording a ukulele, they were all helpful.
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment on "Rushing Into Everything"! The ukulele was one of my first instruments (after the piano); I have been playing it for about thirty years. I've developed my own style and can only "make it sound easy" because I'm very familiar with the instrument. I do have some major limitations; I tend to play in only a few keys, and I stick mostly to the lowest octave. But I enjoy picking out melodies.
[avatar]
Gosh, do we ... need to do a duet on a song about Revco???
[avatar]
Hello, your ukulele recordings are very good indeed. Mine are full of clicks and scratchy sounds. Do you have any advice on how to record a ukulele to avoid these sounds?
[avatar]
P.S. I know someone who could help that become a punk song....
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind comment on "How Can I Be Blue". I'm happy you liked the 'bedridden' phrase. I'm having a tough time making that line scan, so unfortunately I might have to lose it. Definitely needs reworking at any rate.
[avatar]
thanks for checking out the honeymoon songs! I see you've been quite productive, wow! I have some catching up to do
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to Never Will - yes, at times, in life, I'm sure everyone has been able to relate - it was an interesting prompt.
[avatar]
Thanks for all your kind comments, they are really appreciated.
[avatar]
I was lurking in the skirmish posts for 'Egg' and saw your Arrested Development comment...i literally lol'd and it made my day! Poor Egg, I mean, Ann!
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your comment on my song! :)
[avatar]
Many thanks for listening in to Heartache In This Bottle and for the kind words!
[avatar]
I'm glad you appreciated the liner notes on "White Room" - I felt like the song was too abstract not to give some explanation, but worried that too much explanation would strip the piece of something. Thanks for your supportive comments!
[avatar]
Re: Nuns in sunglasses. One of my mother's favorite photos was one she took at a school picnic when she was about 12, of the nuns from her Catholic school sitting around under a tree and smiling. She said she'd never seen the nuns relaxed and happy before, so it was strange and noteworthy.
[avatar]
"Brenda" sent a response :)

You are very welcome. Thank you for your support.

Thank you so much for your comments on Female characters on riot and A terrifying chimera designer !

Yes, the headache is only one stage of the migraine. The four stages are prodrome, aura, attack, and postdrome. Some people get all four stages, but many don't, and even if you're prone to getting all four, you may not get them all every time. I tend to get three of the stages for sure, and I probably also get aura, but it mostly manifests as difficulty speaking rather than as visual disturbances. Every once in a long while, I skip the attack stage. I have friends who almost never get the headache, though they get all the other stages. Migraines are deeply weird.
[avatar]
it wasnt the lyrics that struck me but the mood of the opening chords and initial melody (although your voice is much richer than hers) . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYUZxp12gQI&ab_channel=CarlySimon-Topic

Thank you so much for the kind words. I've been working with the cut-up technique for a couple of years now, and it has completely transformed how I approach art and music, and opened up so many possibilities (both creatively, and with some of the opportunities that have come my way).
Wishing you all the very best,
Pete.
[avatar]
Platonic life partners are totally a thing! Thanks for reminding me of the term.
[avatar]
Thank you sincerely for the kind words for Calling Out My Name. It's always especially gratifying to hear a talented artist like yourself finding some appeal in my stuff.
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment on 'Chimera.' Confession: I googled the pronunciation about 14 times and still wasn't sure if it was kuh MEER uh or kuh MER uh. I went with the least comfortable for me to sing assuming it would be more correct. *shrug*
[avatar]
I’m so grateful for all of your kind comments. They mean a lot to me given a am a huge fan of your songs and musical sensibility. Thanks!
[avatar]
Saw your post re over 600 comments. Omg. I was aware - and very appreciative - that you’d been by my stuff frequently but wow fantastic and it’s always so helpful indeed essential to have others reflect on what we’re up to validating encouraging etc . I’ve got soooooo much out of FAWM/ 5090
[avatar]
Thankyou so much for supporting me with multiple comments on my songs! It's appreciated! Happy FAWMing! You're doing really well!
[avatar]
@kiffa
Just call me 'The Merchant of Menace' lol. I'm glad that you liked the demo for "The Witching Hour", long intro and all. Truth be told, I thought about making it even longer... but maybe that's a 'just for me' version lol.
[avatar]
Many thanks for your kind comments about "Bring It On"!
[avatar]
Thank you so much for hearing and commenting my little uke tune! Very much appreciated.
I wish you a wonderful weekend!
[avatar]
@bunga
Thanks for your comments! I really appreciate them.
[avatar]
Thanks as always for your kind comments šŸ¤“
[avatar]
Oh! I am very into a twin peaks comfort watch with the coffee pie combo! šŸ’ƒ šŸŒ•
[avatar]
your picking was fine, it was the tango rhythm that you did so well in the strumming that i liked more than the slow passages with the picking.
[avatar]
Thank you for listening to 30 seconds; I think I'm going to go back in and add more to it. Excited to listen to your music!
[avatar]
thanks for the info on that ukulele - I guess I'll have to save up for a trip over to Hawaii !
[avatar]
Thank you for spinning, and the kind comment on Open The Door - I appreciate it.
[avatar]
@kc_
Hi Jenny, any interest in a collab. I love the uke and starting writing for one but was taken in a different direction! LoL! LMK would love to do a Uke and Bass combo.
[avatar]
Thanks so much for hearing and commenting "Photograph". Very much appreciated!
If you as being the "Queen of Ukulele" have the time to listen to my one and only uke tune, walk this way: https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/26734

my daughter loves when i admit to being wrong, so sometimes i tell her i am wrong and she is right when the truth is the opposite of that.
[avatar]
Have it roll back at the end to where you first looked under the kitchen counter, and go ahead and eat it. Though I'm seeing a franchise of multiple books, TV shows, mousepads, and cuddly toys so you might want to hold off on the eating part for a bit ... šŸ˜‚ Or maybe babyberry can be reborn each time ,,, ?
[avatar]
thank you for the comment on my song. I'm enjoying your tunes loving your voice
[avatar]
Thank you for your kind words. I'd love it if you set "The Inquiry" to music. I have a friend outside of here who might use the lyrics at some point but I'd like to hear multiple versions. If that works for you go right ahead. Thanks for the prompt, it was a good one!
[avatar]
Thanks! I think I have to be clear - I'm not sure there are any references here, or at least, any that make sense. This was a very silly, off the cuff lyric. I had a sense of pot-ay-to / poe-tah-to in my head, and the names of some Beatles. I don't think Yoko has a music degree. It's all just a bit of porridge.
[avatar]
"I think, therefore it's true" really is about the most human thing ever, isn't it? Again, thank you so much for the listens and kind comments 😊

I have a feeling that may be in 1 or more of the 31 to go :)
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on "Slice." I'm glad you liked the song. I appreciate you listening!
[avatar]
Hey Jenny - saw your post in the forum how to get your lyrics noticed and thought I would reach out. I had never done a co-write before I joined FAWM, and now it is one of my favorite parts of FAWM. I can write my own lyrics and music, but I love writing to other people's lyrics (and sometimes music) because I get a song I would have never created on my own. I never change a single word without approval from the writer, and usually it is just for flow. I also always send a rough draft and ask for feedback from the writer. I have done 4 collabs so far this 50/90 (the 5th was finished after FAWM) and have a few in the works. Creating music is easier for me than creating lyrics. If you ever have lyrics that you don't feel like working with musically toss them my way! I really like what you have created so far - and welcome to FAWM!!
[avatar]
hey, cheers for listening to my movie-themed song! much-appreciated!
[avatar]
Hehe, I like "for your FYI". I know I shouldn't but it amuses me. I might start using that myself... thanks for your comment anyway! (I am so far behind with my listening - I'm looking forward to hearing more of what you've come up with over the next few days though!)
[avatar]
The music for Charlotte was always there :-)
[avatar]
Thanks for your note on "Forgotten Secret". It's funny that you felt there was something being said behind the fuzz, because there actually is a really mangled radio signal in there. šŸ¤“
[avatar]
Thanks for your supportive comments on "White Skies and a Wildfire Sun" - I absolutely cringed when I wrote the "miasma/my asthma" couplet, and I appreciate you letting me off the hook for it!
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to Frog Prince and your kind comments. I was going for whimsical so success!
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out "Above Ritus 4". I'm happy you enjoyed it šŸ¤“
[avatar]
@mikeb
Thanks for the listen and comment on 'Miss Zoom'!
[avatar]
Thanks, Jenny.
[avatar]
That happens to me a lot, I'll write a verse and then the chorus is actually better in a different song. Maybe the effect of opening the muse gate so wide they all want to come thru at once?
[avatar]
@mikeb
Thanks for the comment on 'Questioning'!
[avatar]
re: voice. A long time ago I was bemoaning the fact that I didn't have a "blues voice" (I started learning the guitar by playing along to blues and a few blues-rock albums) and then I discovered Robert Cray. Such a pure voice. No gravel, no miles and seemingly, on first listen, no character. But the more I listened the more I heard it. There's something to the clear tones he had that was enticing. He ain't no Howlin' Wolf, but he's better than that in one sense, he's uniquely himself. Here's to using what we have the best we can.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on "Shout at the Drought." I'm glad you think the song has a broader meaning than the initial concept.
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out "Her Maker's Words"! I've finally got another track coming in the morning. šŸ¤“
[avatar]
Hooray!
[avatar]
Thanks for staying through the 45 seconds of "A Place in the Sun"! :-)
[avatar]
Thank you for the comment on "Get On Out (Help Yourself)"
(that was my favorite line too šŸ˜„ )
[avatar]
Thanks for your response - isnt it strange everyone just assumes we are ā€˜good at performing’ when in fact loads of us have been on a long road towards even being able to show what we do to others. ( either visually or just letting people hear stuff in my case) very grateful to FAWM and this community for actually getting through to my subconscious that I can be able to let it all hang out and therefore make incremental steps towards … well whatever it is we are doing. Feeling able to play in front of people seems such an important thing.
[avatar]
@mikeb
Thanks for the listen and comment on 'Beautiful Day'!
[avatar]
I learned how to chuck today because of your live stream - thank you!
[avatar]
I swear, I didn't notice that Bill said the same thing! And here I thought I was offering something slightly original! šŸ˜„ at least I imitate great minds!
[avatar]
Thank you, to both you and your son!! Tell him he has a great ear for music šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜‚
[avatar]
It seemed appropriate to end it with a bit of cacophony! Thank you again for the kind comments! (Hehe - I originally typed "cacaophony" - I am a poor speller - but cacaophony sounds good...) šŸ˜‚
[avatar]
Thanks - I like the idea of a Fawmer gathering. I'm gonna start a forum topic to see if there's any interest.
[avatar]
Putting my English Teacher hat on. The tense you asked about in that song "Featherweight" about flying as a super power is called "the second conditional"

There are four conditionals using "if"

"If you heat water to 100Āŗ C, it will turn into steam." (Zero conditional. Happens every time)

"If it is sunny, we will go to the beach." (1st Conditional. Based on real probabilities)

"If I had a super power I would...." (2nd conditional. Speculative)

"If Hitler had won the war, we'd all be speaking German now" (3rd Conditional. Speculating on alternative events in the past, used a lot for regrets: "If I only I had done X then Y wouldn't have happened").
[avatar]
I'm really glad you and your 12 year old enjoyed 'Dawn In The Town Of Pallet'! Thanks for listening!
[avatar]
Actually had it on repeat on Insta. 9 songs on day 10, I'd say you are well on your way! LMK if I can help :)
[avatar]
Thanks for the Kansas hello - and hello to you too Jenny! I grew up in Winfield, moved to NYC and then back to Wichita for about 15 years. We are now back in NYC (Harlem, soon to be in LIC). Small world!
[avatar]
Thank you for your consistently joyful comments!
And yes, please keep complimenting my playing! It's so encouraging :)
[avatar]
Glad you liked my "Molly Bloom" song. "Ulysses" isn't as frightening as it is often made out. Imagine you are being told a tale by a pun loving, bawdy drunk Irishman in an out of the way bar in Dublin only frequented by locals and you will be fine.

PS Cliff's Notes are also a great help for background and the parallels with the story of Odysseus (Ulysses).
[avatar]
Thanks for commenting on Picnic Time At The Human Zoo. If music reaches my picnic basket I will definitely let you know.
[avatar]
Also... music-block is a trap. I wrestle with the same thing. I try to think of each song as a new thing and not compare it to what else I've done lately. Tell that critical part to take time-out. You're trying to write, dammit!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments. I really appreciate someone who listens.
[avatar]
Hello, NUNYork. Thank you for stopping by at "Time and Life. Life and Time." The challenge in the 2 chord song is changing up the vocals so that you are not singing the same melody. It is an interesting exercise,
[avatar]
Thank you so much for listening to my songs! Yes, your right with "Picnic Time": it has certainly some "undertones" of which I leave the interpretation to the imagination of the dear listener!
[avatar]
It’s a blend of fact and fiction. Mostly fiction! Thanks for the comment!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on Poem Out of Weather šŸ˜„
[avatar]
Heh...I don't even know what Modest Mouse is! *Looks it up* Oh, I see. I've clearly been paying close attention to everything.
[avatar]
Ahh, thanks for that nice comment. I'm still fully in selfish mode it seems, as I have only listened to one of yours so far. Will endeavour to be a more complete human being... tomorrow! Goodnight!
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to "Steuben and the Poison Meld I: The Poison Meld!" I look forward to seeing the new Indiana Jones movie.
[avatar]
Hey thanks so much for leaving well wishes on 'The Day We Met'! We really appreciate it, seriously. šŸ˜€
[avatar]
I did that prompt in FAWM in February. https://soundcloud.com/tamsnumber4/relentless-olive
[avatar]
Marching tortilla chips will be incorporated into some future video!!! Not sure how that's going to work, but that's just too funny. šŸ˜‚ Thank you for the kind comment!
[avatar]
Thank you for checking out 'Analog Melancholia' and 'Denver'! Really glad you enjoyed them :)
[avatar]
thank you, yes a free VST - collaB3 with some stops automation and stutter edit applied :)
[avatar]
Hey, thanks so much for leaving a nice comment on 'Whatever'. It's all good, there's a lot of great things going on still, like... I'm getting married on Friday and the honeymoon starts on Sunday! If one of my friends turns out to be a bigoted jerk then... oh well.
[avatar]
fundamentally it is music played at 30bpm or lower and often has breaks and soft places. The idea being the slow speed of the sloth
[avatar]
Really glad you liked "The Elevator Into Summer" - thanks for listening!
[avatar]
Yesssss!!!! I love it, Jenny! A million thanks! And great you were outdoors for a garden song!
[avatar]
Thanks for listening - and namedropping someone I'm a big fan of ā¤ļø šŸŽµ
Maybe another made up genre is in order.... Bl-uke-s šŸ˜† (I don't think that'll stick...doesn't roll off the tongue very well)
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on Larry The Koala. It seemed like a way-too-specfic prompt at first. Then it just got more silly from there.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on "Shoes (the Writing on the Wall)!" I hoped the song's origin story would amuse someone!
[avatar]
Glad you liked Dying of the Art - I loved working on that one with Nadine, it came so organically.
[avatar]
Glad ā€œThe Weathermanā€¦ā€ led to grooving!
No better compliment I can think of šŸ™‚
[avatar]
thanks for the kind words on 'Thought'! Really glad you enjoyed the atmosphere
[avatar]
Thank you again for your kind comments and enouragement. Really appreciated!
[avatar]
No learning allowed! :-) Thank you for the kind comment!
[avatar]
Thanks for your words šŸ™
I never saw the movie but the lyrics speak for itself.
[avatar]
Hi, and thanks for taking time to listen and comment on Doctor, I Feel. Cold. It was such a pleasure to collab with David, and I'm glad you liked the result! šŸ˜€
[avatar]
Awesome! Thanks!
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out "We Travel the Stars"!
[avatar]
did pixar make a ponyo movie too? my reference was the Ghibli production directed by Hayao Miyazaki
[avatar]
Thanks for the listen on my grand piano song! I have to admit to using a rhyme website to find message/wreckage - I knew I wanted wreckage but I could only find really obscure rhymes for it - until I found an example with message/wreckage from a Motƶrhead song! Thanks Lemmy!

Oh, and I should also say - welcome to 50/90! You smashed FAWM, so I'm really glad to see you here. Just don't burn out leaving a trillion comments - it is doable for a month, but unless you have the constitution of an African elephant, three months with that kind of comment rate will leave you a gibbering wreck...
[avatar]
Welcome to your first 50/90! I love the genres you describe / relatable! Thanks for checking out some of my lyrics. No one has claimed Pesky Weeds although someone asked if I was wedded to those chords - the answer was no. So if you hear something and want to put music to it, you would be welcome to. I love your musical sensibility!
[avatar]
Hi Newuke, thank you for the great compliments on I Am Ready, positively beaming :)
[avatar]
Thanks for listening/commenting on Uke Song - it may have been the most fun I've had writing a song yet šŸ˜†
[avatar]
I live in Montclair, New Jersey. Would you like some song lyrics about NYC?
[avatar]
Brooklyn huh? Home in NY for me is a waterfront shack up in Adirondacks. Your Sweey Leaves brought me back. Haven't been there in 6 years even to check on it.
[avatar]
Thank you!
[avatar]
Thanks for listening and commenting on "The Battle Hymn of Belmont Avenue." I'm glad you liked it!

[avatar]
Thank for listening! I'm happy you enjoyed :) Yes we had to show this song because of its meaning.
[avatar]
Hi Jenny. Nice to be paired with you for the postcard challenge. I saw your mail, and will respond now.
[avatar]
Good to see you back, Jenny. I am looking forward to more of your songs. Have a terrific 50 90.
[avatar]
Hey Jenny, I am looking forward to more of your music!
[avatar]
Great to see you here! Looking forward to hearing some more of your songs.
[avatar]
Thanks for the follow. Good luck!
[avatar]
Hi, thanks for the follow, and welcome to 50/90. Love me some uke, so I'll be popping in to listen. :)
[avatar]
Glad you’re back!
[avatar]
Yay you're back! Excited to hear you again!
[avatar]
I hope you enjoy 50/90! It's a bit different than FAWM, somehow being a little more laid back while also demanding a slightly quicker pace.

Now that I own my own home and I can't bother any neighbors maybe I'll finally start practicing the ukulele... Well, it can wait until after my new windows come in at least.
[avatar]
Welcome back! Ha, I'm pretty sure you'll nail the 50 this Summer. Good luck!
[avatar]
Howdy New York! Here's wishin' ya a happy 50/90!
[avatar]
We couldn't keep you away! Glad you came back. I tried the #100days, but only got through 17.
[avatar]
Happy 50/90!
[avatar]
looking forward to hearing emolk and MidEmFoke songs, have a great 5090!
[avatar]
All the best to you in 5090!!
