Liner Notes

A late entry for the "Good Times" Skirmish. This one harks back to the late 70s, early 80s when I used to perform at the Albion Fayres in East Anglia (England). They were a kind of modern medieval fair at which those who still believed in peace and love could gather to celebrate. They were growing in popularity until a bunch of buses carrying a lot of rather shady people (along with a few idealists) started invading the fayres. Their nihilistic attitudes contrasted with our peace and love ideals and they caused a lot of problems on the sites. So much so, that landlords who had willingly rented the Fayres Organisation fields to hold the events on stopped cooperating and the fayres consequently died a death.

I have always been convinced that the convoy were financed by the establishment who are always terrified of anything that smacks of people finding alternatives to capitalism.

Instruments:
Baton Rouge 8 String Baritone Ukulele
Mandolin
"Wild" Irish Whistle
Bass and percussion by Band in a Box

Lyrics

Intro: (D) (A) (D)

(D) Oh, I'll always (A) remember the (D) good times
When (Bm) hope you could (Em) taste in the (A) air
When the (D) tribes all (A) gathered to(D)gether
At the (Bm) latest of (A) Albion (D) Fayres

We would (Bm) dance and we'd (F#m)sing till the early (A) hours
Watch the (Bm) theatre shows (Em) hear the groups (A) play
What a (D) sense of community (A) we did cre(D)ate
As the (Bm) summer sun (A) faded a(D)way

CHORUS

We would (Bm) join in the (F#m) rituals the (A) Laceys performed
Or (Bm) watch from a(Em)far with (A) awe
The (D) kids would all laugh at (A) Palfy the (D) clown
We all (Bm) knew what we (A) were living (D) for

CHORUS

But the (Bm) rot set (F#m) in when the (A) convoy turned up
And the (Bm) mood turned (Em) bitter and (A) sour
The (D) hippy ideals were (A) kicked out the (D) gate
As (Bm) nihilism (A) beat up flower (D) power

But I'll (D) always re(A)member the (D) good times...

Evokes the atmosphere of the fayres so well! Too bad the community feeling was lost. I think the ones in Canada just went broke. Good choice of instruments esp. the whistle.

It sounds like it would have been such a lovely festival until the bozos of nihilism showed up. I love the music on this and the tin whistle is a great way to end! Hard to imagine that you were ever a hippie… 😄

This has an outdoor festival feeling for me. It could work as a drinking song also. It feels timeless.

This was a well done three four kind of Irish tune. From the words to the arrangement to the musical and instrumental choices. Very cool dude.

i love thi one. it reminds me of the early days of music festivals, when they were a gathering of the tribes before they lobbied for celebrity line ups. in the US, it wasnt so much a descent from peace and love into nihilism but the dominance of bad drugs like speed and heroin over marijuana and LSD.

Your lyrics make people think and the light hearted feel is hiding deep thoughts. A lovely take on the prompt.
