Where I Don't Belong

I wrote this in the hour or so I had before we left for St. Louis this past Saturday (to see some friends and the band Diesel Island with John Horton guesting on guitar which means 3/4 of the Bottle Rockets were playing classic country cover songs and I enjoyed it immensely) and then promptly forgot all about it until I was chatting in the slack about being uninspired and thinking I should check one of the, at least, half dozen things I've started and not finished this 50/90. Turns out at least one of them was more or less finished after all.
Lyrics
I keep my eyes shut tight
So I won't fall in love
I try to hide in the night
'Cause I'm not strong enough
Don't give me a reason to love you
Don't lead me on
My heart can't take another break
Please don't string me along
Where I don't belong
The walls that I've built around me
Can't keep me safe
Now that you've managed to find me
They go up in a blaze
Don't give me a reason to love you
Don't lead me on
My heart can't take another break
Please don't string me along
Where I don't belong
I've spent half my life
Running from pain
Never stopping to notice
What I could gain
But in the end
I'm still afraid
Afraid of the choices that I've made
Don't give me a reason to love you
Don't lead me on
My heart can't take another break
Please don't string me along
Where I don't belong
