A short note to creatives:

Yes, you're music is art. What you do with it, or how you make it is up to you. If you want an audience you will surely make different decisions than if you make it solely for yourself. That's okay. No-one has a right to tell you how to do your art. However, no-one is obliged to like it and, like it or not, most will tell you one way or the other. Usually the "nots" are louder than the "likes."

Catharsis is different for each of us. The act of creation is, in large part, my catharsis. A welcoming audience is another. I choose to focus on the first. No choice is wrong for you, though.

Artists have been struggling with conforming to what is popular in order to gain an audience for as long as there has been art, I'd bet. You are not alone. But I doubt many of us can help you forge your way. That can be scary, but it can also be liberating. For what it's worth, I'm glad you are creating.

My mantra is simple: never record a vocal line once when you can layer four separate takes (each with me assuming a different "character") instead. That's my secret.
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind comments on my recent songs. I’m so glad you enjoyed them.
[avatar]
Oh, I am so appreciative that you think so. I am happy with them too. I think your drumming was literally perfect here. I think of it as, all of us doing a very good job of doing exactly what the guitars wanted and needed us to do.
[avatar]
Here I am, back again, to say thank you for your wonderful response to Granite and Glass. It was great working with Del, and I'm so glad you enjoyed the song.
[avatar]
It was wonderful to read your comment on @housewystan's and my collab on Dreams, Needs and Promises. I, too, loved what Amanda did with these lyrics and I'm delighted that the song resonated with you. It's always particularly gratifying when someone who specializes in a particular style gives you a compliment on a song that's done in a totally different style. Thank you for taking the time to listen and give us such positive feedback.
Your comment brought me to your page again where I am doing some more exploring. I liked the way you presented your email address. I think I'll keep in in case a lyric idea magically appears that might interest you. 😀
[avatar]
Did we read the mind of this track together or what :-) :-) :-)
[avatar]
I'll check with the admin of the Rocktober forum about your login issues and let you know.
[avatar]
Hi, I've finished my spoken word/instrumental track which I had mentioned in the "Reciting public domain poetry" forum. If you wish to hear it, here it is: https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/32144
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment today on ‘personal beef ‘- it was really helpful to have your encouragement .
[avatar]
Hey, TC - if you do get around to making a collaboration album and want to use anything I helped with, you definitely have my permission. Happy to help in any way.
[avatar]
Great job on finishing 50 songs! :)
[avatar]
Thanks for checking in on our multicollab. I was planning to email tomorrow when I'm back from vacation to make sure stuff is at top of their inbox - didn't get response the first time. Sounds like either you or I could mix in a pinch?
[avatar]
Thank you for the amount of time required for an album. I think I could succeed with this challenge.
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to "Open The Door"
It is fun that involving a DAW to my writing/demo-ing, has enabled me to widen my genre pool (to include some of the styles I loved as a young'un 😀)
[avatar]
Thanks for listening and commenting on "Shoes (the Writing on the Wall)" - I'm glad you liked it!
[avatar]
Thanks! Happy you liked Nailing It.
[avatar]
hi! production camp for me was the one month summer music production school at Catalyst Berlin. It was super fun to stop working and go play with synths by the spree. I would recommend it :) But I think the advanced music synthesis program is more fun if you have ableton basics
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on Arpeggio Jam 3, and for busting that Zong! Glad you enjoyed your listen 😊
[avatar]
Thanks for the visit. I'm glad you had fun with "Film Crew's Come to Town".
[avatar]
Thank you for listening and commenting on Late Night Conversations!
[avatar]
Thanks for your recent burst of comments on a bunch of my songs. Glad you found them enjoyable!
[avatar]
It was so great to finally meet you 'in real life' at @FAWMStockWest after all these years, TC. I enjoyed your music, as always!
[avatar]
No rush TC, by end of September would be awesome! But if you don’t make it I understand hundred percent!

Will likely send him over later this afternoon
[avatar]
TC! You’re crushing it over here! I’m going back to my desk to throw away all my pens and ideas! Lol!

Song bubbled up this morning called “everybody’s sorry tonight” was thinking of you, any interest in taking a look at the lyrics?
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind words on I Love You Still. Much appreciated
[avatar]
…and yep - I insisted on the cowbell. 😀 He trusts my instincts.
[avatar]
That is impressive. Man, can you imagine an EP or even a full album with that kind of ambience. That would sound fantastic. Seriously; no smoke-blowing. FAWMstock West sounds like good times were had by all. Glad I was able to make at least one (2019).
[avatar]
Thank you! I'm watching without chat and enjoying your concert right now. Good one!
[avatar]
Thanks for spinning "Somewhat Moderately Less Sad Porcupines" (the title was almost even longer, and sillier, but I figured that may be enough 😆 )
and "What u Needed" My soloing is not a strength, so it makes me feel good that it caught your ear
[avatar]
Thanks for the comments, and the well wishes for my hand. If I can figure out how to not use my pinky, guitar may be in the cards un the next couple of days.
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out the collabs on "Take The Long Way Round" and “Blue Ghosts!”
[avatar]
Thank you for your feedback.
[avatar]
Regarding short songs: How to write in a way that resonates with people?
I've been doing a certain amount of playing out with these haikus, and people like to sing along, but I can get too abstract.
Also, they're short and I can play too many, which overloads the senses.
I've also been teaching, and people want to write their own. Maybe that's the best route.
Finally, this is something new, and anything new takes a while to sink in, if it ever does. . .
[avatar]
Thanx for your words on West Virginia Green.
[avatar]
Glad the bunny got away.

Here's another peanut: https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/26524
[avatar]
Thanks a lot for your encouraging and kind words on Blue Ghosts! 🙏♥️
[avatar]
Thank you TC!
[avatar]
I'm so glad you got a laugh from my "Wish You Were Here" bit.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on the Calypso collab. Yes, under a minute pushes you to a wall. Then, if you break through, who knows what's on the other side?

See: https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/27478

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the lyrics to “Try a Little More.” I appreciate the audience insight!
[avatar]
Really kind of you to drop in for a listen to Calling Out My Name and Beer With My Name On It. Thanks much for the encouraging words.
[avatar]
Still catching up on comments! Thanks, too, for the comment on “Wĭld Hearts.”
[avatar]
Thanks for the comment on “Baptists and Bootleggers” — appreciate you checking in on that draft.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on Punk Advice With A Sneer. It was such a fun collab to be part of!
[avatar]
Thanks for your very kind comments on my collab with davidtaro & serene (Absolutely). Great to hear how it resonates with people. Nice that you also put it in the Recommendation thread! Thanks!
[avatar]
Hey man, thanks so much for the comments, recommends and, indeed, wall of sound challenge tag!! Haha. I’ll keep an eye out for any tagged tracks :)
[avatar]
Ah! Thanks so much for sticking that in the recommendations thread - I don't think I've had one there for years! Glad you liked it - I think you are right about the structure - I end up sticking all these bits together and lose track of what the chorus is! by the way - I've been meaning to thank you for your bandcamp purchase last year(?) or was it FAWM this(?) of my album - I felt like I was king of the world!
[avatar]
Thanks for stopping by to check out "The Day I Arrive". Appreciate the visit!
[avatar]
Re: Driver, if you're a Canned Heat fan, listen to Henry Thomas goin up the country from 1928 on youtube. Henry Thomas was the original Canned Heat, note per note, including the flute(?) solo.
[avatar]
Hey there, thanks for your update. No time pressure from over here. Just in case it helps, though, I had forgotten to say that I’m fine with you re-crafting the words as needed to suit your treatment. Skirmish lyrics can be problem children sometimes. ;-)
[avatar]
Yes, please do! (re: ‘Alas’) 😊
[avatar]
I really appreciate your comment on “Didn’t Want to Let You Go”. It hadn’t occurred to me that the song might offer something to others. Thank you.
[avatar]
There's nothing literal about sentient chains that threaten to squeeze you to death if you don't relive your past because they don't exist and neither does Songfight. At least that's what I have to tell myself to keep myself calm. Imaginary things can't hurt you.
[avatar]
Thanks for reviewing "Life in a Dying Town". Glad you liked it!
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to and raising the flag for "We Write Songs!" I appreciate the listen and the support. Unfortunately, there's no prize for whoever supplies the next theme song, so I'm not planning any exotic trips.
[avatar]
Dear self-described "runt of the litter"--NOT! 😀 Thanks for the fun comments on When It Happened. It sure was fun "working" with Tuesday Gray on this, and I'm really glad you liked it! It's funny...this is a song about a bad situation, but it is SO MUCH FUN to listen to Tuesday's rant!
[avatar]
I had a great time binging your songs walking around the Dallas airport this week. I’ll mean to go respond to them individually, but in the meantime, thank you and great work.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on the mowing song!
[avatar]
I emailed you!
[avatar]
Hi! Thanks for your nice comments on my lyric On the Water. Yes, please! Go ahead with any musical ideas you have!
[avatar]
#Pop for the win, yes, TC, for that "Small Talk." Just added those other tags for good measure, lol, and more platform exposure. Thx for checking it out. Cool that you dug the lyric.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on Give crazy room to roam. @nancycunning is the AWESOME lyricist. One day my musical chops will be equal to her words. This is so much fun, man.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on "With A Kiss".
[avatar]
I only saw you email yesterday. Sorry. Emailed back, but yeah. Go ahead and post. Sounds great!
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind words about "Actually". They're really appreciated. I don't know much at all about singing, but I was definitely up near the top of my range at some points - enough that I wound up coughing during some scrubbed takes, which probably accounts for the raspiness you heard.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on "Two To Tango!"
[avatar]
Guy with electric guitar is great too. 😀
[avatar]
Hi T. I'd be very happy to hear a guy and his guitar take on Chimera. Very cool!
[avatar]
@kc_
TC,

Thanks for your kind comments on my soundboard. I will say that I really like your vox and style of playing.

Off topic.. What kind of bike? I rode years ago before kids. had a 1986 Suzuki GS 650, bought used in 1991 and then bought a new 1993 Honda Nighthawk 750 - That was a great bike! Good luck. I had heard that if the current number of bikes is "X" then the formula to determine the optimal number of bikes is X + 1 !
[avatar]
@kc_
TC! Thanks for stopping by to read and comment on 40 Watt Lies! Really appreciate your input and time! I Still have to finish a 3rd verse and hoping someone in particular would pick it up.
[avatar]
id love to start a band but peruvians dont understand our kind of rock and roll. and even if i moved back ro the states, most of the guys i used to play with are in hospices or retirement homes. fortunately we have a lot of exceptional singers with good production and performance skills who i can pass my rock lyrics onto. this one, though, was personal so i had to do it myself. thanks for listeneing and for your coments.
[avatar]
Thanks for being the first to comment on "Fish in the Percolator" -- I think the song will only make (a sort of) sense to big Twin Peaks fans (tv/film). It still doesn't really have a story, though, more of a mood. I think I managed to stay "in tune" with the chords on this take, though not always on the note I wanted, so it's good that others don't know what note I meant. ;) Thanks again!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments! In hindsight I think maybe a less jangly uke sound would be better (it's not as if I can play anything else after all :)). But I can work out those details later...
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out Dying of the Art and leaving thoughtful comments!
[avatar]
Thanks for the comment. The "right hand" weirdness is probably the washing machine reaching its final cycle. Certainly the beeping that ends the song is that. It's un objet trouvé, one hopes that's how it seen anyway!
[avatar]
Thank you for the kind words, much appreciated.
[avatar]
Thanks for listening and commenting on my songs!
[avatar]
I’m up for doing a Jason Isbell-style lyric without any input, so don’t feel any pressure. I’m travelling for 10 more days, and the muse is always extra slippery on the road, so it may be the end of the month before I get you one.
[avatar]
Thank you TC! I am happy you enjoyed "The dying of the art". Yes, I was talking to Chris about a dying muse if you lack of ideas to write something because the market is so fast and full with mediocrity.
[avatar]
Thank you, too, for the kind comment on "Florida Man" — I appreciate the compliment on my voice but honestly I’ve always found it boring and amateur, and wished I had cool vocal texture, something distinctive and full of personality like any number of people I could name. My voice isn’t a professional “wow what a voice” to me, ever. However, I’m trying to get kinder to myself and accept that it does have personality — it has my own personality — and that I don’t need to sound like a recording artist (especially unfiltered), and as long as I connect with the lyrics and emotions and music it’s good enough. So it’s nice to get a compliment and I try to take it in. But I’m also jealous of so many other voices! So I get that, too.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on "Dreamwatch 1 (The Koala)” — that open line does have a bit of a startling effect!
[avatar]
@tcelliott you absolutely can! And your simple guitar and vocals are always so fantastic! I'm looking forward to hearing it.
[avatar]
Fantastic. I’m in. If you have any phrases or themes or musical noodling or a draft instrumental you want me to write towards that works for me. Otherwise I’ll go dumpster diving in notebooks and airports and welcome whatever emerges.
[avatar]
Thank you for taking the time to look over what I have been posting, TC. Much appreciated.
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to “Pesky Weeds.” If there’s not a list prompt, that would be a good one!
[avatar]
Thanks for the listen and comment on "Swinging on a Vine"!
[avatar]
@cts
You are moving right along, broski! How goes ya? Congrats on obtaining your degree. Well done, my good man. That is all kinds of awesome. Have a great 50/90 (though I can see that it's already off to a good start).
[avatar]
🙏 thanks for your nice words bout ma bass playing on „Ponyo Evolution“. I wasn‘t always tight but i had lots of fun with the recording. The vocals brought me to my limits 😀
[avatar]
Thanks for listening and commenting on "Shoes (the Writing on the Wall)." I'm glad that parts of the second verse worked for you, because it was a bit tough getting them out into the world. I appreciate the support!
[avatar]
Ah, thanks for being so nice about Gideon Strange - it's weird how songs happen: I totally thought of the bit with the name repeatedly as the chorus and then did the "has he got a pot" bit just as an afterthought to have something different, but I guess that's the chorus!
[avatar]
T.C.! Thank you so much for your kindness. Your comments always light up my day. And thank you for the mention in the Recommendations thread, I am honored!

I got the idea for EP In A Day from Andrew Huang & Rob Scallon, who have been getting together every 1st of October since 2018 to record a 10-song album in a day. Each one is documented on YouTube, and they’re all super inspiring to watch!
[avatar]
Thank you for your thoughts on "The Last to Know" — I will keep them
In mind when revising!
[avatar]
@kc_
@tcelliott Thanks for your listening and comment on ... My Viking Funneral demo really appreciate your input and time during this super "crunchy" 50/90 season!
[avatar]
So glad you liked Doctor, I Feel Cold. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. Now that I'm here on your page, I see some more good stuff awaiting.
[avatar]
Thanks for the comment and pointing out the demo wasn't working! (Oops!) Fixed it now :)
[avatar]
@klaus
Hi TC. I see the piggy has finally done his business in the lavatory. I'll sure miss his innocent smiling face.

Hey, thanks for that post on "Started early" thread. I've never started a thread before so I was afraid it would not get any comments. So thanks again.

Autopilot sounded good to my ears. Have a great 50/90.
[avatar]
It's creatin' time!

Great to see you again
[avatar]
Hey, there! I am here! Just a little behind! Okay, a lot behind, but here before the 4th. Phew! I made it! Damn, I don't even have my rock hands yet! I need to go order them now!!!!! Happy 50/90ing! :)
[avatar]
Congrats on the degree!
And I'm looking forward to hearing your new songs!
[avatar]
Oh goodness if you can't even bend it then you definitely need to wait! Once you can play again I hope you can play around in some open tunings. The easiest to start with with Drop D - just lowering the low E string down one whole step. I start with a tuning and just play around sometimes to see what I come up with - and many a song has been born that way. Hope you are able to play soon!!
[avatar]
Howdy T.C.,
Here we go again! Good to see you here. Let's write us some great tunes.
JW
[avatar]
Hey dere TC! Happy 50/90 to you!!
[avatar]
@mal
Hello! 😄
[avatar]
Glad to have you here! Congrats on making it through graduation!
[avatar]
Hi, Tom. Happy 50/90. Have a great and productive Summer.
[avatar]
Congratulations on your graduation. Glad you’re here!
[avatar]
@gm7
Welcome back.

Welcome TC, great to see you here again.
