Memories In A Drawer

Liner Notes

I seem to have two predominant "genres" of song--songs about "breakups" (because "Heartbreak Is My Brand ™") and songs reflecting on the past (because "I Am Getting Old" ™ ). This song, obviously, is of the latter persuasion and...I hope you enjoy it.

MEMORIES IN A DRAWER

In the corner of a room
that has seen all the years,
Is a drawer, it's a treasury
of smiles and of tears.
A flicker of the past,
full of photographs and lace,
Each a silent witness
to a forgotten face.

There’s a letter, now so yellowed,
edges frayed and worn,
Words of love, words of promise,
and now so forlorn.
And beneath, I can see now
a ribbon from her hair,
Fragments of a time
when she was still there.

CHORUS:
MEMORIES IN A DRAWER, tucked away from sight,
Holding the echoes of the days turned into night.
Whispers of the past, calling soft and clear,
In the quiet of the night, you can still hear.

A ticket stub from
a movie we once saw,
Laughter in the dark,
sharing soda with two straws.
A photograph of
her smile caught in time,
A moment that we captured,
on a mountain we once climbed.

These mementos, bittersweet,
are a map of where I've been,
The story of my life,
helps me remember now and then.
A journey through my heart
and the places it has gone,
Memories in a drawer,
sometimes I go through it 'til dawn.

So I'll close this drawer,
but never close my heart,
For in these memories,
she will always be a part.
Therein memories of our love,
of our loss, and of our grace,
In the quiet of the drawer,
she will always have a place.

CHORUS:
MEMORIES IN A DRAWER, tucked away from sight,
Holding the echoes of the days turned into night.
Whispers of the past, calling soft and clear,
In the quiet of the night, you can still hear.

Wonderful descriptions in this! It's very poignant storytelling. I enjoyed the music and melody. It all flows together naturally and smoothly. Your singing brings the emotion to the forefront. Good one!

I spent twenty-some years in the photo business. While it's fun to look at fresh pictures just back from the lab, the real value is realized years after the shutter was released. You have done a great job of highlighting the value of the collection of old photos residing in a drawer. Great song, Jerry.

Fabulous Jerry! Very relatable emotions expressed without resorting to standard clichés with a catchy melody sung over a truly engaging arrangement!

Beautiful, nostalgic and romantic title, lyrics, music, singing and playing. Very poignant and powerful take on the sadness and longing. Another amazing work, Jerry.

I just love the autoharp that fit these lyrics so perfectly well! Sounds of long ago and yet, so relatable now too. Wonderful work!

Really enjoy the prominent autoharp driving the beginning the song, and how the production fills out from there. Lots of great, interesting chord changes driving this forward into that great melodic uplift of the chorus. I feel like I *also* pretty much have the same themes these days, though I've been managing to write some happier love songs lately, somehow!

This is the song I have been trying to write. You remain master of the heartache.

@sbs
These seem to be my themes this 50/90, too! Oh, the longing for those younger days. Certainly those feelings! Or, most of them, anyway - lol! Nicely done!

Great song concept and very relatable. Beautiful story telling and written so nicely around your theme. I loved how you ended the story with that last verse. The song has such a good flow, and your smooth vocals are just lovely.
