It's Hard to Start a Fire in the Rain (Stephen Wordsmith Lyric)

Liner Notes

Back to the old roots for this one - one take on a guitar.

I haven't listened to anyone else's take on this in an attempt to get what was in my head from the lyrics out into the wild first, so apologies if it sounds the same as anyone else's!

The delicate simplicity of this version is an utter joy. Really timeless song.

Your vocal performance is accentuated with the simple (and quiet) accompaniment. This is a very emotive take and a good one.

I love the understated vocal delivery. You have an amazing voice, powerful yet there's a softness there as well. Nice contrast in the bridge.

Love your chord choices here, and the beat is very steady, which keeps it moving relentlessly. I think you have some similar musical choices as others have, and that's probably just because Stephen's excellent lyrics lead most of us in a certain direction.

Excellent! Now that I posted my version, it’s a lot of fun to listen to everybody else’s and this is absolutely wonderful on every level. I like your vocal phrasing, and melody choices a great deal.

I really like the phrasing and spacing of this and great lift in vocals at the right times! Really fine interpretation

Such a perfect collab. The guitar and vocal are a great match for the lyricd. A very complete and richly musical song

I’m noticing a kind of 90’s alternative direction from a lot of these versions. And as a 90’s baby I am here for it. This is just beautiful, your voice is so sweet and clear, and there’s a darkness to the guitar that suits the lyrics well.

my favorite part of yours is the earnest bridge. really lovely melody throughout.

You parse this like an absolute pro (which, to be fair, you are). Listening to your delivery, I feel justified in my word choices - some of which I was on the fence about when I posted the song (thinking, in that innocent time, that it would be a cobweb-clearer that we'd all quickly move on from). This one also weaves the bridge in more seamlessly than most. And sixteen versions in, there are still touches and flourishes I haven't encountered yet. The soaring 'so-o-o-o-o-o-o' after the lingering 'last' is delicious, as is the repeated final refrain with the little outro (when the guitar stripped down I wondered if you were going to go with a lyrical cold close - I think what you did works better).

I love that lower “in the rain” at the end of the verse. Really cool melodic moment. Very nice interpretation!
