Good Examples of Bad Examples

Liner Notes

#country #country #country
The prolific Graham/Daniel brotherhood occasionally invite me into the tent to work on one of their country type pieces, most of which would probably be instant classics in the hands of a real Nashville artist and studio. I just try to give them an amateur's take on one way their stuff might sound whenever I get the chance. They deserve better, but here goes...

Late breaking edit here: I take responsibility for adding "Johnny" to @vaughan and @mctown's list of bad examples the chorus of the lyric, just because I thought it would help with the flow of the line in the music I came up with. As @billwhite51 notes, Johnny Cash maybe doesn't deserve to be considered as nearly a bad example as the others (After all, he only performed at a prison. He wasn't an inmate). So, I'm now retroactively claiming that it refers to Johnny Paycheck instead and I hope the lyric authors will forgive me.

Lyrics

Good Examples Of Bad Examples
Music - Jeff Walker
Lyric - Graham/Daniel

They all sang songs we could relate to
About home, faith, love and family
They invented a world we could escape to
Where three chords and the truth could set us free

  And they made big mistakes
Once they got off the stage
But they made 'em where everyone could see

Chorus:
They were good examples
Of bad examples
They did a whole lot more than sing and play
They were good examples
Of bad examples
Waylon, George, Johnny, Hank & Merle
Warned us…not to live their way

verse 2:
They weren't what some would call good husbands
Most of their time was spent on the road
They had wild parties on their tour buses
And sometimes they'd cancel their own shows

They knew that kind of life
Was alot more wrong than right
And they wanted us to know

  repeat chorus:

bridge:
They were human, and they were flawed..they loved and they fought
They sang and they played.. but the world around them wouldn't stop

repeat chorus:

And the women that they loved survived in their own style. Taking care of all their babies and standing by their man.
Oh the lives of the country singers. The legends always live on in good songs like this one. Wonderfully descriptive and performed.

Terrific song. Interesting lyrics that grab you from the start and tell the truth! Nicely produced also.

Another cool song by these fawmers. You guys should get your own tour bus!! great job

Hooks don't get any better than this. Jeff, you could have really camped this up, but it would've turned the song into a novelty when now it's a unique tribute, which is much better. All your musical choices and your great voice work so well here.

Great hook! Hats off to all three of you.

Another great lyric hook from @mctown and @vaughan - "Good examples of bad examples" is golden! Lovely interpretation too!

Well those guys lived the lives they sang about and that made them so much more authentic and relatable, even though most of us didn't dare try to take things to the same extremes.
Musically and vocally, the perfect setting for these fine lyrics...

Well, we all live checkered lives... to some degree. Johnny would be the first to tell you probably not to do the drugs he did and pointed people to different directions... Wow, thanks for the kind comments...always good to work with Vaughan and Jeff. Agree, very lucky.

They considered themselves to be outlaws. That became their brand. Thanks for the listen, the comments and to you, Jeff.

Wow, so good, so smooth! The title is just as great as everything in the song

this is a good example of a great country song. i really enjoyed this. great lyrics. great vocals. i like the part where you say “the world around them wouldn’t stop” and the music stops except for the drums. that’s a nice touch

about the lyric, the chorus is spot on and there is truth in the bridge. but i have to disagree about their being bad examples, especially johnny, who was a good man through and through. He helped more young songwriters and guitar slingers (including bob dylan) get connected to recording and publishing companies than any other artist of his rank.Note...Ron Davis, who was a close friend of mine and starred in George Jones' video of Cold Hard Truth, was a terrible person in terms of his domestic life (and he didnt even tour, but made his living mostly as a songwriter) but outside of his personal life was the best friend a guy could have. And it was commonly said of him, "He's something of a degenerate, but youc ant deny his talent."
about your music and performance. The prolific Graham/Daniel brotherhood is lucky to have you interpreting and performing their lyrics. You are better than most of those Nashville hacks and I hate to hear you undersell yourself. Outside of those classic performers of the golden age, I cant imagine anyone doing more justice to the the lyrics of mine you have taken on than yourself.

No fair! When the three of you do a song together it's ALWAYS the highlight of the day--at least for me. ALWAYS incredible lyrics from those two, and you should be the picture when you look up "country music" in the dictionary. Great, great collaboration again, gentlemen! ❤️
