Devil's Flame

Liner Notes

Was going for a an outlaw type life story but this guys is in prison, worse death row. Was playing around with a pedal and the guitar ends up sounding like an organ at times.

Lyrics

e
in here you gotta wear a number
a e
nobody knows your name
bm a e
you don't get here doing saintly thing

momma raised me in the desert
a man before my time
i was born a cub in the lion's den

before i turned number twelve
running paper for the numbers man
it wasn't a crime, just trying to survive

becoming a man was a hard lesson
one i learned two well
watching your back, even when the sun goes down

i caught a john with his hands in my pocket
you know i had to knife him down
judge called it murder now i'm jury bound

one more call in the morning
governor's got to call my name
hope i wont be dancing in the devil's flame

dancing in the devil's flame

Wow, Lee - SoundCloud served this one up to me after SkyClad. It sounds so finished I assumed it was off an album you’d released. The language is understated and wonderful. It feels just right for this character. Makes me put myself in his shoes instead of standing outside and judging. I especially like those lines about caught a john… and Governor’s gotta call my name. It’s just all so clear-seeing and real feeling.

I really like the various lines you've used here, and I feel like you have a great voice. That and you're already in Nashville! :)

So many nice lines. The timbrer of your voice is made for singing..cool. this bluesy feel song is so different but I I'm digging the guiater sound.

"I was born a cub in a lion's den." Great line! You have a great voice for country, and this lyric has plenty of grit, as is appropriate for your message. Nice job!

Effective use of the organ. Reminds me of early blues but has a kind of spiritual quality too. Well done!

I really like this one! My favorite line is the zeugma "before i turned number twelve/running paper for the numbers man" - I love the way you used the word "number" in so many different ways.
