Breaking
Liner Notes
“Breaking” - #fawm 50/90 2024 original song 2
For Judson Memorial Church’s “The Q in Question / Queering As an Act of Constant Curiosity” series: song 3/6. Week 3: Queering Our Heroes.
Here’s a new song draft for my third week of writing around the current sermon and service series from my friend Rev. Micah Bucey @revmicahb and all the staff and artists at @judsonchurchnyc Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village. This week we were celebrating Pride in NYC, and I was inspired by the readings and what was shared, as well as the ancestors and saints whose images and memories and legacies surrounded us.
Note on the idea of “queer,” in the words of Bell Hooks, this is “‘queer' not as being about who you're having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but 'queer' as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and that has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.”

Lyrics
The bats come like a breeze
Flying foxes in the night
We are lying on a blanket
In the grass, feeling all right
You don’t need another hero
I don’t want another war
This world keeps making angels
And I wonder who they’re for
We are the losers and the winners
Heroes, saints, and sinners
No one’s flying to save us
From the trouble that’s making us
We break
And we survive the breaking
You sing under your breath
But I didn’t catch the words
And I hope we last forever
Even as our edges blur
You don’t need to be a martyr
I don’t want to fall asleep
The bats are circling back
The dark is wide and deep
CHORUS
Isn’t this a miracle?
It spins and we don’t fall off
Aren’t you so wonderful
My heart just drops
CHORUS
