When I thought about the skirmish topic of silver and other metals, my mind went back to those years when I would visit my then father-in-law's Orthodox #jewish community for Shabbat. It was not *my* community as such, but there was a simplicity and beauty in that sacred time.
There is no place at all for me there now that I am openly #queer, but I still light the candles on Friday night and think about how we claim a time, not a space, for ourselves.
Lyrics
A Quiet Evening
Jemma Kline
I see the sun slip into the west;
The world takes a breath.
I take the candles from the drawer
And quickly sweep the floor.
The tarnished silver still has a shine.
We’ll say the blessings, and then we’ll dine.
A quiet evening,
a peaceful night,
All is well, all is right.
We had a temple so long ago;
An altar, where we’d go.
Though they were shattered, and so were we,
No grieving; we are free.
We pray in time now, not in a space,
Join in this moment, as we say:
A quiet evening,
A peaceful night,
All is well, all is right.
Rest the day,
No more work.
Simply stay,
Simply learn.
Then as the night falls,
Watch for the stars.
A quiet evening,
A peaceful night,
All is well, all is right.
