Not exactly sure where this came from today. It's been a while since I came up with a lyric that I didn't put to music myself and none came readily to mind for this so I thought I'd post it sans music. I'm not totally sure it is a candidate for a song--it might just be a poem. But if anyone wants to take a crack at it, please holler.

Lyrics

Berlin

On our side everything is gray
But no, it wasn’t always so
Once, peals of laughter carried us away
And we lost our voices to the piano
Til that dreary place morphed into East Berlin
We danced at parties like mad marionettes
All dashing rakes with painted ladies in
Furs and pearls with unlit cigarettes

Unconscious to how freedom isn’t free
Lesson one: The Reichstag Fire Decree

That a beast resides within the hearts of men
Is lesson two, then all the rest revealed
Original and unforgiven sin
Toward targets maybe not so well concealed
By technocrats who get to call the shots
One answer to the question as to why
(Regardless of the horror of the what)
Any man must cause another man to die

No blood was ever spilled that meant a thing
Don’t dare to tell me death has lost its sting

Hey, Jeff - this one's definitely outside your box. I like it. I especially like how the lyric doesn't tell the listener exactly what the Reichstag Fire has to do with the current state of the world. It makes me think about how the combination of certain and wrong has been a popular one over time. All I know to do is to try not to be too quick to believe I know the truth or that all good people need to agree on much of anything. I was thinking I'd love to hear @billwhite51 take on the lyric as I read it.

jacques brel could have made a brilliant song from this lyric. were i to attempt it. i would move toward that vein. for example...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKtZf62BQzM i coulnt do something nearly as good as this, though,

That's a brilliantly conceived and written piece that scarily, is very relevant today and whether it's a lyric or a poem...either way, it works so well...
