25 Years

by @danielkelly

Liner Notes

I try to write a song around 20 July each year to mark the passing of another year in the Chinese Communist Party oppression of the peaceful meditation practice of Falun Gong, ongoing since 1999.

Lyrics

D
25 years of sadness,
G D
25 years of pain,
G D
25 years of resistance
G A D
It’s 20 July once again.

A Em
25 years of compassion,
D
Despite all the violence that’s done,
G D
Imprisoned, slandered and tortured,
G A D
By the power the comes from the gun,

25 years propaganda,
From the Chinese Communist scourge,
Spreading lies to every corner,
Hoping the truth will be purged,

25 years cultivation,
Of the heart and body and mind,
With a strong will and determination,
A brighter future we’ll find.

Beautiful harmonies in your voice here. Very poignant, subject and lyrics.. those who suffered similar religious suppression in Eastern Europe bear the scars from it decades afterwards today.

Pete Seeger is alive and well, but without the American accent. A beautiful protest song presented without rancor or rant. And beyond the content of the song, I love the timbre of your voice and the harmonies you've added.

Well put. I find protest songs hard to write; anger or sarcasm tends to overwhelm them. With this one, you show how it can be done.

Takes me back to Hong Kong in 1992 - was sad to see it return to Chinese rule in 1997. Beautiful song!
