Howdy, 50/90ers! I wanted to write a song about the fear of burnout and its certain inevitability in a capitalist culture.

On a personal note, I get genuinely afraid of nearing breakdown whenever things are going well. There's a part of me that feels there must be a time limit for how long I'm allowed to be happy and in the zone, which is a mentality I need to figure out how to kick. It's a puzzle I will put on the shelf until I get a new therapist, ha!

Lyrics

Limoncello soda water
Air conditioning, I got it made

Grass is yellow, dead of summer
Hundred-ten degrees in the shade

Keep your head down and get to work
The only way they’ll know what you’re worth
Climb aboard the altar and they’ll bleed you dry in worship

But I am headed for a breakdown

I don’t want to burn out
But I don’t want to slow down
(I’m not in control)
It took too much to get here
I don’t want to stop now
(It’s taking its toll)

I don’t know when my time is up
But I’m not leaving with an empty cup
I don’t want to burn out
But I’m not going without something to show for it

Rice and chicken, clearance shopping
Get the cheapest option they can make
Live Tweeting your shoplifting
It isn’t really stealing when you’re taking from the snakes

The system cheats you, so cheat it back
Karl Marx has got your back
You know it’s not your fault you’re on the attack

We’re all headed for a breakdown

I don’t want to burn out
But I don’t want to slow down
(I’m not in control)
It took too much to get here
I don’t want to stop now
(It’s taking its toll)

I don’t know when my time is up
But I’m not leaving with an empty cup
I don’t want to burn out
But I’m not going without something to show for it

Something to show for it

Limoncello soda water, should be cool
But something is wrong

I don’t want to burn out
But I don’t want to slow down
(I’m not in control)
It took too much to get here
I don’t want to stop now
(It’s taking its toll)

I don’t know when my time is up
But I’m not leaving with an empty cup
I don’t want to burn out
But I’m not going without something to show for it
I don’t want to burn out
But I’m not going without something to show for it

What fun! Great juxtaposition of 'going with the flow,' 'caught in the whirlpool,' 'crashing against the bank,' 'boat's got a leak,' and the motherfrickin' rat race. Glad you brought Marx in, he doesn't get much credit in our culture. And starting it off with limoncello. Yeow! Nice clean guitar, strong vocal. What's not to like?

Way too relatable. I work a full-time factory job to support my life so I can make music in my free time... and making music is pretty much the main thing I do because I want it to at least offer supplemental income someday so I can do it closer to full-time... but is it just capitalism making me think that my hobby only has value if I can monetize it? I just want to be happy and enjoy life. I don't know... (the lyric about stealing from snakes is wonderful, so so good overall).

The lyric is powerful and most of us can surely identify with it on some level. Voice and guitar match perfectly, I can hear this as quite a powerful acoustic rock track too. I really like this

This song is definitely in the zone. Solid melody sung with a let of feeling. Great guitar work. I can relate to the theme as well.

I think a lot of people can identify with this theme. I especially feel the line about the system cheating. For sure. Like how you break out with the punchy guitar right before that 'something to show for it' part. I like the rhythm of your words as well and you have a really good melody. Cool tune!

this is fabulous. you hit so many bull-eyes related to the polarities of the work ethic and self preservation. and i always love your innovative metrical constructions and the melodies that grow from them. and regarding my ersonal favorites, i ove the way your line "something to show for it" echoes (perhaps not intentionally) lan del rey's line in "changes " "We'll be there for it"

“Limoncello” caught my attention - my husband enjoys it. You have great control over your vocals. Lovely!
