This was originally for the 'I've been everywhere' skirmish - and I did write the lyrics on the plane flight home to Philly - but it took me a few days to get the melody and harmony the way I wanted them. So no skirmish tag on this.
But I loved the prompt, and it took me to a place that is important to sing about, especially right now.
Lyrics
Flying to Philadelphia
Jemma Kline
Rushing breathless to the airport,
Luggage missing half a wheel
Wait in line for two full hours,
Hope my mask is fully sealed!
But i'm flying to Philadelphia,
And in Philly I’ll be free.
Oh i'm flying to Philadelphia,
Where my heart will always sing.
Moving sidewalk blocked by children
Running backwards from their mom,
Find the jetway fully loaded,
And my suitcase won’t fit on!
But i'm flying to Philadelphia,
And in Philly I’ll be free.
Oh i'm flying to Philadelphia,
Where my heart will always sing.
Now I may not visit South Street
For they closed down half the shops,
Can’t buy a painting from an artist;
They were chased off by the cops.
Flags are furled in the Gayborhood,
Rainbow colors stowed away.
Yet the people of the Delaware
Won’t let tyrants long remain,
So i'm flying to Philadelphia,
And in Philly I’ll be free.
Oh i'm flying to Philadelphia,
Where my heart will always sing.
For freedom’s always flown in Philly,
And that’s where we’ll all be free.
Yes we’ll rise again in Philly,
Where the bells of freedom ring.
