“Sublimation (The Water Cycle)” - #fawm 50/90 2024 original song 21

It’s not quite there. I had to call “time” on this demo video — it’s blazing hot with my fan off and I am out of phone battery, so I can’t do any more takes, and I need to move on to other things today.

Still having some timing issues with the strum and there’s a bit of melody I have a better idea for, I will iron those out in practice. This was another skirmish lyric from last year that needed melody, and it felt #musicaltheatre to me. True stories, by the way! I did almost always have a crush on my science partner and my now-husband and I did actually work on a water cycle diagram that got an A.

The ending isn’t supposed to sound sad — I was distracted, thinking about revisons. 😂

Lyrics

That junior high crush on my cute
Science partner
Named Jason — bowl cut hair
And so, so much shorter
But I didn’t care

The teachers kept teaching the same
Water cycle
But all that I learned was that
Evaporation
Is quite hard to do as the
Grade’s tallest girl
At the dance, stayed in corners
And watched the rest whirl

Then Ben was in 8th, just moved in
From Australia
His hair gelled in spikes
And his accent was ace
And his smile was nice

The teachers kept teaching the same
Water cycle
But all that I learned was that
Precipitation
Is when you fall hard, cause
You’re not being careful
What transpired was nothing
So — not much to tell

But in high school, Dan drew the
Assignment in color
I did all the labeling
And we got an A
It was not just a fling

I thought I’d evaporate
First time we kissed
My groundwater was
Infiltrated with bliss

The teachers kept teaching the same
Water cycle
But all that I learned was that
It’s sublimation
When love makes me vapor
But somehow still me

And a hard rain will fall
And the glaciers will melt
And the water keeps running in circles around
And sometimes you get lucky
And you’re there in the sky
Sometimes your tears drop -- and soak into the ground

Transported between one desire and the next
And the runoff, the uptake, is all we’ve got left

The teachers kept teaching the same
Water cycle
But all that I learned was that
It’s sublimation
When love makes me vapor
But somehow still me

Really clever and interesting lyrics. Very compelling. The 'And a hard rain will fall' section is very powerful indeed. It feels like a whole chapter of adolescence summed up in one beautiful song.

Wonderful performance - vocals are delightful. Very interesting story telling in the lyrics.

Brilliant idea on how to metaphorically weave and connect your development, your infatuations, your teenage confusion and ultimately your love with the water cycle!
What is particularly beautiful is:
„My groundwater was
Infiltrated with bliss“
Really good (as always)!

This is very cute, and a well-told story. Good use of science terminology and specific details in the verses. I also like the merry-go-round quality of the melody in the chorus, appropriate for a song about cycles. 😄

brilliant idea..the same lesson being taught in class every year but each new boyfriend bringing a different meaning to those same principles. the music was sharp and snappy. i especially like the way you stretched out those five letter words related to water.
