MASSIVE SPOILERS for Stephen King's The Long Walk. Proceed no further if you are not okay with spoilers.
This song is the bookend to "The Lucky Ticket-Holder." In every Long Walk, of course, there's a "winner." This is me imagining their mental state after they've "won" the Walk.
Lyrics
V1
Am G
I see them standing at my bedside
Am E
I see them lying on the ground
F Am
I see them begging me for mercy
F G Am
There are dead boys all around
I won, but what good did it do me?
They died, leaving me to stand my ground
I lived, but they all see right through me
There are dead boys all around
Br
F
I walked them down
G
They dropped like flies
F
I pushed them harder
E
Than they realized
F
They were my friends
Am
And enemies too
F G E
Oh God, what am I going to do?
V2
I never knew they were people like me
I never knew it was a killing ground
I mean, I knew, but I didn’t see
There are dead boys all around
Mom and Jan are fussing over me
All my friends are crowding round
I can’t hear them, but I can see
Dead boys all around
Br
I walked them down
They dropped like flies
My friends are dead
That’s the only Prize
And they’re all here
My enemies too
Oh God, what am I going to do?
V3
Pete and Baker and Stebbins too
Pearson and Scramm sitting on the ground
Barkovitch glares, and what do I do?
There are dead boys all around
They say I lived but this cannot be
I wish I’d died, I am losing ground
I miss my friends, I’m going crazy
Or there are dead boys all around
I see dead boys all around
There are dead boys all around
