Lyrics

We stay together I don’t know why It’s so apparent we live a lie
We’re both unhappy, so one assumes With silent meals and separate rooms

Maybe the children are why we stay still bound together day after day
We never argue, though conflict looms With silent meals and separate rooms

In sickness in health when rich or poor We said those vows we knew the score
I can’t imagine why we would leave Are you still willing to believe?

What was the reason we grew apart Nothing I said would touch your heart
We’ll take a secret into our tombs With silent meals and separate rooms

I gave you flowers I don’t know why. It seems you left them untouched to die
They go together, those withered blooms With silent meals and separate rooms

Oh wow, the way the chorus hits when you make me wait for that giant, rising "believe" ... !

The topic is the stuff of literature ... I join others below in hoping this song wasn't inspired by anything too close to home.

And a note on performance context!!! O man I wouldn't change anything about the happy little bird tweets at the top of the track. That's kind of the essence of the mood here ... all the ingredients for domestic bliss are there but for one reason or another the partners are unhappy.

In my mind I can hear this as a slower Buddy Holly style song - slightly sad but with a hint of nostalgic happy memories from the subject (By the way, I hope this isn't autobiographical).

Loving the baritone ukulele. I guessed the subject from the title. The song melody and music are slightly melancholy, but the lyrics are tragic. I hope your reality is much better than this!
