I recently attended my first in-person #filk circle, where we all shared our #music surrounded by a wide array of instruments, reading our creations from music stands we passed around as needed. It was a profound experience. I am so thankful to those who welcomed me in, and cannot wait for my next chance to share in such a space.
This song is in honor of that, but speaks to the wider experience of music rooms everywhere.
Lyrics
In The Music Room
Jemma Kline
Rows of metal doors line the waxed and shining floors,
With announcements sending children on their way.
But come with me, take my hand, as we cross into that land,
Where the only thing we’ll do is learn to play.
In the music room,
I’ll sing to you.
In the music room,
You’ll sing there too.
In the music room,
We all can choose.
For there’s nowhere quite as free as the music room.
There’s a group of chairs; join the other students there.
Open up your music stand and find the page.
Stand up straight and breathe in deep, try to keep up with the beat,
One day soon we’ll all perform this on the stage.
In the music room,
I’ll sing to you.
In the music room,
You’ll sing there too.
In the music room,
We all can choose.
For there’s nowhere quite as free as the music room.
In years to come,
You’ll still have fun,
For music rooms are waiting everywhere you go.
Just find some friends;
You’ll all join in,
And together you can put on quite a show.
In the music room,
I’ll sing to you.
In the music room,
You’ll sing there too.
In the music room,
We all can choose.
For there’s nowhere quite as free as the music room.
