Just saw the skirmish at about 5:30 my time, so I thought I'd do this one a touch late.
The prompt made me think of a friend who, after going through a rough breakup, had a "burn party." She burned all of the notes, cards, and other memories from that relationship in a fire ring at the beach, with about ten of us there for support. (The viewpoint character is not burning their ex - just the memories of them!)
Lyrics
(Capo 3)
V1
Am F
Fire, burning up the memories
G E E7
Burning off the days when we were new
Am F
Flame, sweeping through the feelings
G Am
Sweep away the days of me and you
V2
Ashes - what was left of us
What little now is left of you and me
Cinders - glowing in the darkness
Setting light to what we used to be
CHORUS
F
Just go in the fire
G
Go into the flame
Am
Become the ash and cinders
I’ll remember your name
F
Just go in the fire
G
Be gone without a trace
E
Forget what we had
E7 Am
I won’t remember your face
V3
Pain - my memories of our passion
Your fingerprints all over my days
Hurt - growing like a flower
Burning in me, setting me ablaze
V4
Torture - every day my mind
Turns back to what I had with you again
Suffer - I do it every day
I have to find a way to end the pain
CHORUS
BRIDGE
F G
I can’t go on any more
Am
Dragging these memories like a bag full of tears
F G
I can’t keep carrying you with me
E E7
A monkey on my back, riding my fears
V5
Light, burning in the fire
Drawing my new strength from it, I mend
Wish, rising with the smoke rings
To find a better way to make an end
V6
Past, the place we’ll always be
And where I leave the memories of you
Gone, the lock upon my laughter
Now the fire has had its rightful due
BRIDGE 2
I will go on with myself
The memories are ashes and my heart can flee
I am done with this addiction
The monkey’s in a cage, I am free
CHORUS 2
You’re gone in the fire
You’re gone in the flame
You’re just ash and cinders
I’ll remember your name
You’re gone in the fire
You’re gone without a trace
Forget what we had
I won’t remember your face
CHORUS 2
