VOYAGE 11: A PASSING MID-OCEANIC WHALE

The sea-borne block of flats is scurrying westward, giving up on intended port stops and winds, trying to keep out of--and hopefully get in front of--the cyclone edge immediately north-west. It's sunset, and looking into the interest light of cyclone cloud, increasing sea and general haze, a huge cloud-column of what looks like steam is hanging just ahead. Speaking to the occupant of the neighbouring condo balcony about it, I realise it's my first and only chance at shouting a famous cliche. And indeed, not far out to port, a spout!...and under it, a lone humpback whale, ambling eastward after what must have been a deep and long dive.
In the whole long crossing from Hawaii to Tahiti to Brisbane ( by sea, 10,879km/5874nautical miles/6760miles), this was the only whale we met in the whole wide empty Pacific. And indeed, we met no other ship, cruise-ship or not, on the ocean. Nor saw a contrail. And it wasn't for lack of watching sea (and sky). That was wonderful. And one wonders what the lone humpback was up to.
I've tried to get the sense of absolute loneliness, distance and at the same time warm homeliness (in whale terms) into this piece. Tried, anyway. What came out was excellent...for another painting. So what YOU'RE getting is this, which is...nothing like!
