Alone

Liner Notes

Although written/posted as a single song, this is actually 3 songs: Alone, Hide the Guitars and Alone (Reprise), which will be scene 1 in my rock opera.
I had written out a complete dialog/stage direction scene for this scene when I came across this lyric, which I wrote in December 2020 and promptly forgot about! Had to rewrite, rearrange and add parts to it to come up with this final form. No need for dialog when the songs tell it all!

Lyrics

Alone ©2022 Michael J Birch

A stranger stood on the porch as I stepped off the bus
‘I am Mrs Wetherton,’ she said, ‘William, don’t make a fuss’
She was stern and hard-looking, hair the color of the clouds
‘Your parents aren’t coming back,’ she said, ‘their rock and roll is not allowed’

Alone, alone at 9 years old
Alone, alone out in the cold
Alone, alone at 9 years old
Alone, the world has gone cold
Alone

With disdain on her face, she dismissed the tears in my eyes
She strode to a white van at the curb, as I stood there and cried
She turned and said, ’you’ve got an hour to pack your things’
‘Your clothes and school books are all you need to bring’

Alone, alone at 9 years old
Alone, alone out in the cold
Alone, alone at 9 years old
Alone, the world has gone cold
Alone

[Hide the Guitars]
I shivered as I went in, they’d made a mess of it all
Dad’s Les Paul, mom’s Precision bass, no longer hanging on the wall
I ran to my bedroom, filled with heart-wrenching dread
But dad’s 68 Strat and my little Peavey were still stashed under my bed
I looked around, frightened, what was I going to do?
Would they find my rock and roll guitars, would I disappear too?
I grabbed the guitars, ran down to the hidden door
In the cellar dad had found here years before
They’d been scared in the 1950s too
And built this shelter underground we could use

[Alone Reprise]
An hour later I was waiting, trembling and alone
And they took me away from the only home I’d ever known

Alone, alone at 9 years old
Alone, alone out in the cold
Alone, alone at 9 years old
Alone, the world has gone cold
Alone

This sounds so masterfully done with an intriguing story line with lots of enticing highlights for the rock opera to come...a fine piece of work and very impressive!

@panch

The opera is shaping up well, I like the way this piece moves through the parts and the idea of using rock"n"roll as a subversive element within a totalitarian regime.

Oooh, proper concept-album stuff! I'm hearing echoes of the plot to Rush's "2112" in this. The scary thing is how much more plausible songs like this have become since 1976...

The story is fascinating, and I imagine it will make a superb rock opera. I love all the pieces. Has me trying to figure out what will come next. I imagine loads of awesome songs, intrigue, tears and elation. I am a captivated fan!

from what i gather from listening to this excerpt. this promises to be an excellent rock opera in the tradition of The Wall.

Mike, this is pure dynamite. That first section is very Floydian (Floydesque?) and that "alone" chorus just soars. Love that line "She was stern and hard looking, hair the color of the clouds". This may be the highlight of the rock opera so far for me.

Epic. Your harmonies in the chorus are so soothing. They sound lovely! Like the band America. I'd say this rock opera was well worth the wait of 2 years. Nice work!!
