Sad State of Affairs

Liner Notes

Since FAWM I've been busy playing and producing music, but my songwriting has been in a slump - hoping 50-90 will help spark me!
This is the first 'all in one day' song I've written and recorded since FAWM.
Used my new (used) mandolin, new Gretsch bass and my Taylor 314ceBE I got last year.
My first 50-90 song ever!

Lyrics

Sad State of Affairs © Michael J Birch 2022

Oh say can you see
We’re losing our rights
They’ve taken our freedom
Not a chance to fight

Oh say do you feel
The walls closing in
They put bars on our windows
Hoping we don’t notice them

It’s a sad state of affairs
The whole country’s in disarray
It’s a sad state of affairs
No more independence day

Oh say can you hear
The final toll of the bell
No more promise of heaven
Cause we’re on the road to hell

It’s a sad state of affairs
The whole country’s in disarray
It’s a sad state of affairs
No more independence day

And the sunset’s red glare
From more smog than air
Shows the Court doesn’t really care
And automatic guns
Are still sold for fun
As Congress basks in the sun

Oh say can you help
It’s our future under attack
The battle’s just beginning
And we’re not going back

It’s a sad state of affairs
The whole country’s in disarray
It’s a sad state of affairs
No more independence day

really awesome arrangement with the mandolin leading the melodic playing. important message in the lyrics also. nice harmonies in the chorus - makings of a great song!

I like the sentiment of the lyrics. (Hope you watched last night!) Very nice music arrangement to this. Nice vocals--nice mixing/mastering. Come ON--do all 50 this time!!

Hi, Mike, Thanks for checking out Bonnie and Clyde. That brought me here to hear Sad State of Affairs. I was intrigued by the contrast of the light feel of the music and the heavy lyrics. Nice combination.

Mandolin sounds great, Mike. Great idea to take the national anthem as the basis. Tough times, for sure. Don't give up hope!

@andrea

My heart is crying as I listen. It is hard to imagine hope when hope feels lost.

We need the dreamers of yesterday and the righteous of today. ( Sounds like another song:))

Great song, great performance and recording! I wrote about very similar feelings in my first song, ('unhappy july 4th') posted earlier today, and I guess its at least a bit encouraging that many of us are feeling similar about this set of current insanities we have here. Great lines, and the mandolin and various background vocals add so much to this! fantastic work! This makes me want to get out my mandolin, too! (and I have a Taylor guitar as well, an 814ce )

Daaaaayuuum, so good. Love that mandolin. It was a surprising, almost nostalgic, sound that felt a bit like a soaring bird... or maybe I'm just sitting in the park too long. Succinct and strong lyrics delivered quite well.
