On To Hollywood

Liner Notes

Only my 2nd skirmish ever, first for 2022!

Simple 1+1 recording, single take each for both guitar and vocal - with the deadline and building roofers still working, I wasn't going to bother with trying more takes. Think I will need to rewrite the vocal melody, bring it down to a more comfortable range for my old voice!

Lyrics

On To Hollywood © Michael J Birch

She was a movie star in her own mind
Mirror posing when she was just a kid
Applying makeup, fixing her hair
Didn’t care what childhood things she missed

Beauty competitions when she was a teen
Elated to be crowned ‘Junior Miss
Meanwhile around her life went on
She never dated, never was kissed

On to Hollywood
Going to be a star
Lights in her eyes
She thought she could go far
Life in Hollywood
Isn’t all it’s supposed to be
A thousand other hopefuls
And no guarantees

Unscrupulous agents and directors
Demanding things she didn’t understand
Never been taught what life was really like
And now she’s lost in movie land

On to Hollywood
Going to be a star
Lights in her eyes
She thought she could go far
Life in Hollywood
Isn’t all it’s supposed to be
A thousand other hopefuls
And no guarantees

Bright lights blind
Lose your mind
Trying to grab the gold ring
Get into debt
Total regret
Settle for anything

On to Hollywood
Going to be a star
Lights in her eyes
She thought she could go far
Life in Hollywood
Isn’t all it’s supposed to be
A thousand other hopefuls
And no guarantees

Yeah, yeah--I'm loving that chord progression for these words, too. VERY much works for this song. Great "one take"!!

This is such a wonderfully insightful and empathic story of following a dream that is never realized due to the egos and powerful that prey on and devour the innocent hopeful. Love the tenderness and empathy you bring to the vocals.

You really captured the classic "Hollywood Dreams" story. Amazing that you could do all this in such a limited time frame!

I like your guitar playing, the chord progression, and the strumming patterns. Good story line with a solid disappointment line.

A solid story song and well delivered in the skirmish.

Love the chord progression choices in this. I think this could be expanded on with some work on a backing of bass and drums, perhaps some electric guitar too! Reminds me of MSPs Dead Trees and Traffic Islands ( I think it’s called that ? It’s the one that goes “paralysis through analysis…” ) a cosy song but with some sharp critique of the world that came to be for the protagonist

Beautiful song. I love the intro and your voice sounds warm and loving. Very interesting take on he prompt. I love the thoughtfulness in your song. Brilliant guitar. Very nice harmonies. Your song is very engaging. Once someone puts in on, they would always want to carry on listening. Love it.

A tiny bit like mine but so much deeper and so much truth! I really enjoyed this one!

"A thousand other hopefuls/And no guarantees" - love this line. This tells a clear and strong story. The second verse really nailed it with "demanding things she didn't understand". Very Harvey W.

Chasing the dream.

Oh those are tasty chords! I love that opening line! Another standout line to me was "and now she's lost in movie land". Your closing 2 lines in your chorus is also perfect! This is such a strong story and probably all too common. Strong bridge too. Great performance for such a new song - well done.
