Mister Slippers

by @standup @fonte @jimdgreen @nancyrost

Liner Notes

This song was recorded on #4-track-cassette by different people in different places. Guitar and bass were recorded in the UK, then the tape was mailed to Wisconsin USA for piano then finally to Washington, DC USA for the lyric and vocal.

Standup: I wrote the lyrics. I've been working from home for 2 1/2 years, and wearing slippers all day every day. I'm surprised I didn't write this song til now.

@fonte -- guitar
@jimdgreen -- bass
@nancyrost -- piano
@standup -- vocals

Lyrics

What do I want
What do I want
I want a quiet empty house
What do I want
What do I want
the voices drowned out

They call me Mister Slippers
I pad around the house
They call me Mister Slippers
I’m quiet as a mouse

You feel like you’re alone
Life without a care
Then you realize
I’m standing right there

They call me Mister Slippers
I pad around the house
They call me Mister Slippers
I’m quiet as a mouse

What do I want
What do I want
I want to be alone
What do I want
What do I want
A quiet abode

They call me Mister Slippers
I pad around the house
They call me Mister Slippers
I’m quiet as a mouse

What a brilliant collaboration. Lovely laid back feel. This could have been recorded in a small venue, it has that live vibe. Well done all involved.

Beautiful melody! Wistful like Prefab Sprout. Brilliant collaboration and song.

This is a very nice listen. Bass and organ sounds great! "They call me Mister Slippers" is SUCH a great lyric to hang the song on. The third verse kills me ... so much loneliness and sadness. Vocals sound mellifluous ... this is your best vocal performance. Love the overall mellowness of the music - it captures the feel of someone slowly walking through the house in his/her slippers. Really great!

I love every bit of this. What a great collab! And it's hard to imagine doing this through the mail! All the parts go together so well, and it does sound live to me.

@mikeb

Great 4-track collab!

This was great. Those slippers must be warm and fuzzy. That’s how I felt listening to this.

A blanket of chill and sonic awesomeness !
This is a great collab. Each person adding their special ingredients to the pie to create a wonderful dessert. Loving those drum brushes...it's all good! 💥

This is so chilled out and warm, I love it! Great vocal performance and all the instruments lock into that slipper vibe, even though they were recorded before anyone knew it was going to be a slipper song :)

Sounds fantastic! UK and US collab is gold! Thanks to the mail services! Mix has lots of air - tape certainly has a 3d quality to it, and the instrumentation + vocals all have a depth to them on the soundstage. Some really smooth jazzy tones I think, suited to mood lighting and sitting back, relaxed. Great work! Mister Slippers all night long.

I have to admit - I honestly miss the fun of the 4 track challenge because of results like this. Everyone, everywhere - I thoroughly enjoyed listening and I can totally relate to the lyrics. I'm more of a hybrid worker these days, but I totally get it. Nice work everyone!

This is so good!
Everything about it feels like being wrapped in a comforting blanket. It has such a relaxed feel. All the parts work so well together to carry @standup's message.
Love it! ❤

@fonte

Oh wow!! So great to hear thissss!! @jimdgreen beautiful job on the bass, so lovely, @nancyrost well, hello there what can I say, some silky keys wowwww, and @standup seriously great great job, both melody, lyrics, and I'd especially delivery. Has an almost live performance feel to it, which is amazing considering it's the opposite of that! Super collab guys, has made my day! :-)

OMG. I love how THICK this sounds!!
Warmth and depth. Great job all!!

[avatar]

Great mix! Lyrics are perfect for the backing track, nicely done

[avatar]

Wow, that worked out nicely.

This is wonderful! That dreamy music is such a great fit for that vocal and the subject matter! Echoes of paul simon's 'slip sliding away' too, perhaps (maybe just in that 'slip' subject?) This is really wonderful. That vocal is recorded so well, too, and the piano guitar and bass add so much...

bloomin heck that was quick work with an actual physical package across the atlantic! is the order things were added the order in the liner notes? very relaxing song, coffee shop vibe. great to see the 4 names as well!! awesome job everyone!!

@nadine

That went pretty quick for a tape over the Atlantic. The song is so chill, great playing and sound. As for the lyrics I have a big grin on my face!

This is a very harmonious combination of some gently resonant tracks. It's like slipping into four different spa pools at once on a cold summer night. It's crisp and slow and blue and moony. The sincerity of the delivery cuts through the whimsy of the lyrical hook and makes it a more relatable listen. It's like we all know a mister slippers. Oh, him.

Great work, all of you - and a great example of what can be achieved when 5090 brings us all together.

[avatar]

Yay, the tape is complete! The vocal and lyric bring the whole thing into focus, and it really does match well. The third stanza amuses me: it sounds like Mister Slippers is in *my* house, ever so gently menacing.

[avatar]

Great Job Mister Slippers and everyone else. I am astounded that you got a 4-track done on the 7th day of 5090 even with international postage.

@elesimo

Lovely atmosphere! Great job with the lyrics matching the soft dreamy arrangement of the guitar/bass/piano... it's nice how every track has its space and plays with the other throughout the song.
