Dead Pixels In The Sky

Liner Notes

I was reading through old XKCD comics, as you do, in the hope of finding inspiration, and I saw this: https://xkcd.com/395/

Well, sometimes I think about the Simulation Hypothesis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simulation_hypothesis) and I was wondering... how would we know? Then I started thinking about the jokes we're making now we're in the office a bit more than we have been, about how we're seeing each other in high resolution and so on, and this is where I ended up.

I have no idea if this will make sense to anyone but me, but nevertheless, here's a bit of #nerd_folk, #filk, or whatever you want to call it, on a #baritone_ukulele #ukulele #fuc.

Lyrics

We're back in the real world
We're meeting in person
Outdoors is upgraded to
The latest version

We don't feel any lag while we're wandering outside
We explore the big blue room with the day star shining bright
When in the corner of my eye is a disconcerting sight
It's a dead pixel in the sky

There's a dead pixel in the sky
A dead pixel in the sky
Turn us off and on again, please will you try
To fix the dead pixels in the sky

Zoom has nothing on
This latest revolution
To see my colleagues in
High resolution

The frame rate in the city must be upwards of a hundred
All the 3D models are so beautifully constructed
But something's not quite right, something is corrupted
There's a dead pixel in the sky

There's a dead pixel in the sky
A dead pixel in the sky
Turn us off and on again, please will you try
To fix the dead pixels in the sky

I can hear you loud and clear, no-ones accidentally muted
The realistic lighting is surely precomputed
But is it me or when you look up do you
See adead pixel in the sky

There's a dead pixel in the sky
A dead pixel in the sky
Turn us off and on again, please will you try
To fix the dead pixels in the sky

There's a dead pixel in the sky
A dead pixel in the sky
Turn us off and on again, please will you try
To fix the dead pixels in the sky
The dead pixels in the sky

@janeg

But would I trust them to turn us on again?

Nerd folk. Yay! I think this is something many of up contemplate, although your song is way more entertaining than any musings in my head have ever been. This is super fun and upbeat, and not just a little thought provoking.

This is fantastically, gloriously nerdy in *all* my favourite ways, even down to being inspired by one of Randall Munroe's cartoons! The reference to the frame rate is inspired. I love it!

(And as we're being nerdy, this calls to mind the opening line of William Gibson's Neuromancer: "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel" which has acquired multiple meanings as television technology changed. I think it's up to five, now, from wintry fuzzy static to solid summery blue...)

vlever lyric on an original idea with some inventive phrasing on traditional structures, thus reminds me of a thought i once had regardinjg photographs. i was thinking how different the world in the 1950s from the pictures we see from that time period now, and wondered if we went back to any time and place in history if it would have the same coloration as our modern world. we never did live in a kodachrome world...or did we? and are we all pixels now?

I like the matter-of-fact delivery. Voice and music both fit the words well.
I've been watching a TV show called "Upload" and this reminds me of it both in content and attitude.

(Tech support tells me those dead pixels are called "floaters" but they would try to blame the user's equipment.)

Had to hear another of yours. And this is very cool and fun - makes me want to see a video! I am delighted by your singing and playing.

An interesting take on this concept, one I've muddled over a bit myself. I love the folk feel to this, very nice uke playing.

Don't know what this is about really... but this is fun - so upbeat - just what I needed. Wouldn't it be nice which version we could upgrade to in real life.

Oh this is fun - so upbeat - just what I needed. Wouldn't it be nice which version we could upgrade to in real life.
