Fly Home Winkie

Liner Notes

I had half an hour or so to waste today, so I wandered into the McManus Art Gallery in Dundee. One room is dedicated to the history of Dundee and its people, and in a glass case in that room I saw a stuffed pigeon next to a medal. The pigeon is called Winkie, and this song tells the story of how she won that medal.

She has a brief Wikipedia entry too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winkie_(pigeon)

Lyrics

1942, Europe was at war
Soldiers and airmen fighting for the cause
They set off for Norway from an airfield in Fife
In the name of freedom they would sacrifice their life

The mission was accomplished, but as they turned around
Enemy fire took their Bristol Bomber down
Drifting in the sea, couldn't broadcast their position
Their one remaining hope was their carrier pigeon

So fly home, Winkie, fly back to Dundee
We've got two wings and a prayer so it's time to set you free
Fly a hundred miles across the freezing Northern Seas
Fly home, Winkie, fly!

Back on dry land, exhausted and drained
Winkie met the RAF and started to explain
How to find the wreckage and entreated them to save
A team of wartime heroes from a watery grave

How long was she flying? How fast was the wind?
Calculate her speed from the oil on her wings
Knowing when the plane ditched, assembling the clues,
Maybe that would be enough to find the stricken crew.

So fly home, Winkie, fly back to Dundee
We've got two wings and a prayer so it's time to set you free
Fly a hundred miles across the freezing Northern Seas
Fly home, Winkie, fly!

In only fifteen minutes, their whereabouts was known
Thanks to Winkie's bravery the airmen made it home
Rewarded for her courage, like all the bravest birds
She wore the Dickin medal, for animals who serve

So fly home, Winkie, fly back to Dundee
We've got two wings and a prayer so it's time to set you free
Fly a hundred miles across the freezing Northern Seas
Fly home, Winkie, fly!

What a great story, and great writing here. The ukulele sounds almost autoharpish here. Great job.

I love these unsung stories from the war giving little details that have largely been forgotten as that generation have died out. This is a cracking story with some superb lines, both moving and fun.

@janeg

You made this bit of history into a terrific song and tribute. Good eye for a story that needed to be told.
