Last Summer Moon

Liner Notes

I needed to write a song for my upcoming songwriter meeting, the prompt was Birth/Life/Death. I thought of my song 'Be Alive', which I posted here a couple of weeks ago, but really no way to do that song justice solo on an acoustic guitar!

Then I saw the superskirmish with ‘The Last Summer Moon’ as the prompt – after it had finished. As the song formed in my head, I thought how about making that title being about the singer’s last summer moon, not just the symbol of the end of summer.

Just to be clear, I am not dying, nor had a fatal prognosis of anything!

Used my 12-string guitar for one track, so that qualifies it for the ‘Lonely gear’ challenge, as these days I rarely use it except for long solo gigs.

Lyrics

Last Summer Moon © 2022 Michael J Birch

Can’t ignore the news given to me
As they say, ‘What will be, will be’
It’s true, I know it’s true
When faced with a final deadline
As they say, ‘Can’t change time’
Accept it all, is all I can do

One more season of sun and fun
It’ll all end too soon
A few more hugs under the night sky
My last summer moon

Everyone I’ve ever loved is in my head
‘You can never go back’, they said
All my love, it won’t fade, not my love
I cry for those who’ll cry when I’m gone
Hope the sadness doesn’t last long
Words will never be enough, not enough

One more season of sun and fun
It’ll all end too soon
A few more hugs under the night sky
My last summer moon

Winter’s cold won’t miss me
Nor springtime’s green
Autumns colors will still be true
I’ll miss them all, the summer moon, and you

One more season of sun and fun
It’ll all end too soon
A few more hugs under the night sky
My last summer moon

@kristi

A lot of emotional resilience in this. A good message for all. Good melody and harmonies sound great. Kind of a celebration of life with full, descriptive color both musically and lyrically. Nice job!

@andrea

These are super clever lyrics and a terrific use of the prompt. Kind of heartbreaking, yet entertaining. The music is beautiful and I Iove the vocal harmonies. Awesome song!

Good harmonies, and interesting choices of when to use them. The whole thing has a nice vibe to it.

Lovely vocal harmonies and guitar! Compelling lyrics! Really like this!

I enjoyed this a lot, and I've been myself writing more than my usual "reflecting back on life" songs this 50/90 season. Might have something to do with having hit a [gulp] significant birthday this last year. This is another great song by you!

I am sure happy you aren't facing the end! You need to keep making wonderful songs like this one! Incredible!
