Under Desert Skies

Liner Notes

MIkeB - although I just did an 'end of the world' challenge song, Simon's lyric looked like a good one for me to do with a simple arrangement - guitar, piano and vocals. This is my 2nd 50-90 collab with Simon!

Simon - I'd been meaning to contribute something to the end of the world theme but had been struggling for inspiration. However, Scotland is now sweltering in its 2nd mini heatwave in the last few weeks and wild fires are raging in France, so these lyrics found their way out onto the page. Also includes a bit of a cultural reference with the mention of 'the Thunderdome', which of course is a reference to the 1979 Mad Max film which was set in a post apocalyptic planet Earth

Lyrics

Under Desert Skies ©2022 Simon Wright and Michael J Birch

I don't need to look at the weather forecast
To know what today has in store
Forty degrees of insanity
Just the same as the day before

I don't need to have a science degree
To deduce what is going on
The days of doubt and stupidity
Are buried under the Thunderdome

These days it don't rain so much
These days we don't live so good
It's hard under desert skies,
These days it don't rain enough
These days we don't live so long
It's hard under desert skies

The valleys that were shaped by rivers
They're now cracked and stacked with bones
The pastures once a riot of colours
Are now planted with grey tombstones

I cannot dream of future glories
Not while my lips are caked in sand
The world has moved on so savagely
Perfect playground to barren wasteland

I don’t want to think about future fixes
Not when each new day is so tough
Is there any hope for humanity?
Anything that would make us stop?

These days it don't rain so much
These days we don't live so good
It's hard under desert skies,
These days it don't rain enough
These days we don't live so long
It's hard under desert skies
These days it don't rain so much
These days we don't live so good
It's hard under desert skies,
These days it don't rain enough
These days we don't live so long
It's hard under desert skies

Well done and played...the more songs and messages like this the better...especially when so eloquently written and exquisitely performed as this...

We have been suffering a drought here in NY too and wildfires rage in other areas of the US. Love the lyrics. I can feel the tragedy of our planet in your words. The music and vocals offer the perfect mood to compliment the theme. Wonderful collab!

Great treatment of Simon's lyric here, Mike. It's a tough message to handle, but when it gets delivered with this music, it's irresistible to soak it up. Great sound. Your subtle vocal rasp is made to order for this. The bg vocals are delicious.

I've written several songs before about climate "end of the world" stuff. This one is TERRIFIC! Great lyrics, Simon and Mike has done you proud with a beautiful music arrangement and a nice vocal. Great collaboration, you two!

I love end of the world songs, but not the end of the world itsself. The lyrics flow beaitifully. Completely dig the choir layering and the chorus!

Lovely, nice simple arrangement. I particularly like the middle 8, that grabbed, both because of the surprise and how good it was

Terrific lyric, Simon. Evocative with some sharp imagery and a great hook. It's definitely something that would have had me reaching for a guitar if Mike hadn't found it first. 😄

I really like this lyric and I think Mike that's a really a good way to deliver it. The hook is really class.
