and another 50/90 begins!

The first song is always the big pressure for me. Usually it's the first thing I record for the album and it's almost always the opener. Recording the first song is always an event and I feel I need to really do something good.

This year I couldn't hold back so I've already put out four songs for the album, "Joyoda". I am past that initial wave of inspiration so I'm not worried about making "the best thing I can". I want to return to my old mindset of smashing out tunes as fast I think of them.

This song came about simply by the desire to make something for the first day. I woke up and said "I need to make something". The melody struck like lightning and these lyrics seemingly came out of nowhere. Most of them were mentally written in the shower.

My new goal is better rhythms for my songs. I have become obsessed with the Isley Brothers lately and I want to take some of that and add it to my music. Drumming has been my main focus since I went crazy for the Who last year. Now that I have my kit set up better and two mics to record it with I want to continue developing my style as a drummer.

So this is what I mustered up for day one, with less self inflicted pressure than I put on myself for my previous four 50/90s!

Lyrics

Lovely Little Latvia
You're a treasure none can hold
Though you're not made of sand
You still slip right through my hand

Saw your milk cows running free
To the pastures of the sky
Making me a sheepdog
When you do that smile sly

Little Latvia - Little Latvia
Baltic baby girl
Little Latvia - Little Latvia
Keep it all for me

Your nightgown sewed with stiches gold
Leaves little to imagine
From a top your Spanish Castle
You got me floating round and round

A sight men would pay to see
With their plastic ecstasy
Good boys ready to give
Three digits and expiry

Tonight it's just you and me
But this love is hardly free
There's a hole in my soul you took
Drifting far down your sea

Little Latvia - Little Latvia
Baltic baby girl
Little Latvia - Little Latvia
Keep it all for me

Little Latvia - Little Latvia
Baltic baby girl
Little Latvia - Little Latvia
Keep it all for me

This song flows nicely and sounds really good. The chorus is great. Excellent musicianship throughout

Yeah, what @andygetch said. I hurt my head it was banging so much.

Solid. Rock.

I swear I got time-warped back to 1968ish & was sitting on the set of Top Of The Pops. You were wearing your best psychedelic clothing with some kleidescope glasses as you wailed on your mirrored guitar. What an awesome trip & what a great start to 50/90 & the summer! Can't wait for more.

See You In The Shadows…

Drumming is awesome here!
Oh man that soloing at the end around 2:40 is going IN...could've listened to another 2 or 3 minutes of just THAT.
I'd say you definitely got a lot of great rhythm here - not that you didn't before. I think you accomplished what you set out to do there, though. So cool that you're getting inspiration from The Isley Bros!
Dude, if you start to channel some Ernie Isley with your guitar playin, I might not be able to handle it! lol
As much as I've always enjoyed your smashy, free, loose, and energetic vibe in the past, I must say there is a tightness here that serves you quite well. Like I said, the drums sound really good; tight with those hits and accents.
Well done as always!

Oh gosh, that opening riff is gold!
Lovely slightly surreal lyrics here; reminds me of something a folk-rock band might think up in 1968.
Great rokkin solo there for sure!
That self-inflicted pressure stinks; I'm glad you're taking it easier and just going with the flow!

That intro guitar sounds like a new style for you ... Fripp/surf. I like it! "Saw your milk cows running free" is a great line, and the Van Halen-ish guitar solo kicks butt! This would sound great live.

A neat mash up of so many different genres -rockabilly, pop punk, metal and more probably. Love the intro, chorus and solo, great energy.

The solos are especially awesome, very fun track!

@jtsteam

Nice sound here and some interesting imagery with a catchy chorus. Great solo too!

Lovely, fun packed song. Happy, catchy, full of energy and very nice to listen to.

love the solo! rocking out here Kurtis!

Your voice and vocal and even writing style has always reminded me of one of my favorite(albeit very obscure and now defunct) bands. They were always an amazing show, their albums never did them justice.

This is a ton of fun, and sounds great. I really dug your drum sound with just one mic, but this is an improvement it's grabbing your kick a lot better for sure. That's a great sounding kit, and impeccable guitar work as always with a super catchy chorus.

@cola

This is great! I love the lyrics in that first stanza especially, and the chorus is super catchy, I'm sure I'll catch myself absentmindedly humming it later. Loving that outro too. Great way to start off the summer!

[avatar]

Ha ha, you came up as a fawmling! I knew you were young :-) i realise its your new login. Worries over, very good first song! Real rivk, catchy chorus, good stuff!

[avatar]

Cool Intro, very Eastern sounding.
Intriguing lyric and I like the beginning (and rest) of the middle guitar solo. Catchy Chorus. Outro is cool, way to shred!

[avatar]

a great slice of true rock and roll with provacative verses. a killer chorus. and guitar and drums to beat hell.

[avatar]

Huge fun. The lyrics make me think of late 50s doo-wop, but that solo is worthy of Marty McFly! When did you get the DeLorean?

@brisk

I'm a sucker for a chorus, and this is a great chorus! Words as well as tune - the words walk that nice tightrope between being mysterious on the one hand and weird on the other. Love the lead guitar too - great intro.

[avatar]

Hell yeah! That guitar riff that opens the song is such a great hook right away, and the guitar work throughout the song is superb, as is the drumming! Always love to hear a jolt of your rock & roll energy right at the start of FAWM or 50/90, starts things off just right!
