Midge Magnet

by @jtsteam

Liner Notes

A song about my usual role on days out in summer. There's always someone the midges go for first, and apparently it's always me... I wrote this back in July while away, having had the idea while being munched on by insects in a park somewhere, and somehow never got around to recording it when I got back to the recording equipment. I think the line about "fifteen centigrade" seemed out of place given the August we ended up having.

I came up with the tune after hearing "Jamaica Farewell" by Harry Belafonte. Although the result sounds nothing like Jamaica Farewell :). I hope...

Anyway. It's a summer #ukulele song, despite the summer now drifting away... #fuc

[A][D]

It's a [D]balmy Scottish [G]August day,
It's [A]almost fifteen [D]centigrade,
Don't [D]let the sunshine [G]go to waste,
It's [A]picnic time in the [D]park

[D]Grab the pies and [G]sausage rolls
[A]Find some paper [D]plates and bowls
[D]Pack your spork and [G]take a stroll
With a [A]smile and a song in your [D]heart

[G]Watch the wildlife, [D]see the grouse
[A]Swallows sing by the [D]summer house
And [G]don't you worry 'bout [D]getting bit
'cos [A*]I'm the midge magnet and I [D]take the hit

[G][D]
[A][D]

[D]Open the hamper, [G]set the places
On a [A]folding table [D]in the shade
[D]Chase that wasp off the [G]lemonade
And [A]get stuck in to the [D]snacks

[D]Anyone for [G]something sweet?
[A]Ice cream as a [D]special treat.
And [D]where'd I put that [G]can of deet?
The [A]swarm is on the [D]attack

[G]Watch the wildlife, [D]see the grouse
[A]Swallows sing by the [D]summer house
And [G]don't you worry 'bout [D]getting bit
'cos [A*]I'm the midge magnet and I [D]take the hit

[D][G]
[A][D]
[D][G]
[A][D]

[D]Why must I [G]taste so good,
[A]Is it something [D]in the blood
That [D]makes me insect [G]gourmet grub?
[A]Forget it, I'll be [D]in the pub

While you [G]watch the wildlife, [D]see the grouse
[A]Swallows sing by the [D]summer house
And [G]don't you worry 'bout [D]getting bit
'cos the [A*]midge magnet will [D]take the hit

Mosquito magnet here, singing along. We keep everyone else safe but get so little recognition for our heroism.

That title is a classic example of "How to tell somebody you're from Scotland without telling them you're from Scotland". I know from personal experience that you breed the things aggressive and hungry up there, so I was empathising with this all the way through. But I was smiling, too. This one's a classic!

I can see the resemblance to "Jamaica Farewell," but I wouldn't have thought of it if you hadn't mentioned it. According to Wikipedia, it's actually a traditional folk tune, so you're OK anyway.
