My bags are packed

Liner Notes

This is semi-autobiographical, I guess- in a few days we're leaving for this vacation-far-away, for the first time since before the pandemic. Woke up today and did a semi-stream of counsciousness. The whole thing started out as kind of a minor-key variation/riff on a song popular when I was a little kid, that for some reason resonated with me even then, 'Leavin' on a jet plane' (the song was actually written by then-unknown John Denver, but made a hit record by Peter Paul and Mary). In writing my song, it kind of ended as its own independent thing, I think, but that was the genesis of it all.

Recorded live guitar and vocal, on the iPhone (using that music memos app that gives you drums, then in audacity added a little reverb, delay, eq and compression, etc.)

Lyrics

Oh my bags are packed and that's no lie
in a couple of hours (days?) look up at the sky
I'll be flying far across an endless sea

got my clothes, passport and all of my fears
first time I've done this in a couple of years
hard to believe that world traveller is me

got used to staying close to home
but every now and then, you've got to roam

got some guide books, a list of the sights
might eat some herring, might fly a kite
wondering about that volcano as i hike
you can check the facebook and the instagram
for pictures of these far off lands
I'll do my best not to keep track of the 'likes' (a few wouldn't hurt tho!)

will I be a new person traveling far
well wherever you go, there you are

they say travel changes your outlook and thoughts
and your bank account too depending on what you've bought
when I'm back I'm sure I'll have a story or three

Oh my bags are packed and that's no lie
in a couple of hours (days?) look up at the sky
I'll be flying far across an endless sea

got used to staying close to home
but every now and then, you've got to roam
will I be a new person traveling far
well wherever you go, there you are

Lyrics that do a good job of capturing the anticipation of a long distance trip and with that little extra frisson that comes with doing it for the first time since the pandemic (something I've yet to do).

Great line "got my clothes, passport and all of my fears". I totally relate to the message in this song. I like the melodic change from the 1st half of each verse to the second half. I like how you go from the minor themed verses and then to major in your chorus - and then minor again at the end to transition to the next verse. Really great performance and recording. Personally I like a couple of "days" rather than hours (if that is in fact something you are mulling over) - it implies that you are really agonizing over this trip and prolongs our vision of your sense of dread but also your soon to be roaming. Another great line "wherever you go, there you are". Cool song.

… I‘m ready to go!
I stopped because the title. I think I can still sing the whole song from John Denver.
But know I got a new one on my mind!
Bon voyage! Where ever you go!

Nice, Mike! I think you hit on a lot of the thoughts that float through our brains on the eve of flying a long distance. Love the insistent rhythm and the touches of reverb etc really help make it all shine. Safe travels man!

i dont hear much of leavin on a jet plane, but there is a debt to high flying bird..... you capture a lot of the excitement and anxiety of one undertaking a long trip to unknown lands.
