Between The First Smile And The Last Tear

Liner Notes

Here I am, wanting to write a lengthy description of just how meaningful the sentiments to this song are to me--and all I can think about is "Will I get in trouble with YouTube because there are 'children in this video'?" I'm still a little sensitive about YouTube taking down one of my songs FIVE YEARS LATER because it featured some very available photos of child soldiers in Africa--any of which you can see by GOOGLING "child soldiers in Africa"--and so FIVE YEARS LATER they decided that my anti-war song was "dangerous to children". Sigh... And now the photo in the background of this video is of two babies who PROBABLY never got around to signing modeling consents and all. Anyway--this is how my mind works these days... I hope you enjoy the song!

BETWEEN THE FIRST SMILE AND THE LAST TEAR

I have nothing left to lose,
Might as well just say it all.
I've heard lots of sad "Goodbye's",
And there's been some angry calls.
Time for romance now grows short.
Worked for some, but not for me.
Maybe you'll learn from my mistakes,
And how I grieve what used to be.

CHORUS:
I have loved, and I've been loved.
Tried to understand what Life's made of.
So much happiness,
Then so much pain and fear
BETWEEN THE FIRST SMILE
AND THE LAST TEAR.

SOLO

There is nothing feels so good
As when love has just begun.
We don't see the other's faults,
Filled with hope that they're the one.
Like I said, it works for some,
But for me it always ends.
I'm always left standing alone,
And why she's gone never makes sense.

CHORUS:
I have loved, and I've been loved.
Tried to understand what Life's made of.
So much happiness,
Then so much pain and fear
BETWEEN THE FIRST SMILE
AND THE LAST TEAR.

BRIDGE:
There was something wrong each time.
Didn't see until too late.
Never learned to see the thin,
Thin line between Love and Hate.

Such has been my life so far,
With each year chance grows more dim.
What's the point in trying again,
When my luck has grown so grim?
But there is something makes me try,
So I'll likely try again.
Guess that's what we're supposed to do.
Folks do find love now and then.

CHORUS:
I have loved, and I've been loved.
Tried to understand what Life's made of.
So much happiness,
Then so much pain and fear
BETWEEN THE FIRST SMILE
AND THE LAST TEAR.

Your titles are amazing, Jerry. What a beautiful, nostalgic, sad, moving song. Your vocals are so adorable! Singing, playing, telling a story between the first time and the last tear is stunning. Beautiful instrumental solo, wonderful production. Everything is a wonderful treat to listen to. Fantastic love story song. The chorus is my favourite but everything works great. You managed to make your song sound spontaneous and well thought of which is a very special art.

Firstly, great title and the the rest of the song keeps up to that standard.
Secondly, a wonderful production, a majestic melody and beautifully relatable lyrics.
Thirdly, just marvellous!

@andrea

It's a pretty sad song, but I am sure many can relate to the feeling expressed. Lovely music and vocals. I enjoyed the listen.

@billwhite51 Oh yes, that must have been the part I was so drawn to. I was recently watching a piano lesson and he was illustrating that very thing. I thought it made for a cool sound but I try to avoid 7th chords - lol! May have to start embracing them…

Another lovely lyric, vocal delivery, production and instrumentation by you! Authentic Jerry music that is nice to hear this Friday!

I feel ya on YT. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I used to have a partnered gaming channel in the early early days--mostly Zelda top 10 lists. It was a pain in the a$$ anytime I wanted to post specific video clips or music owned by Nintendo. So I deleted it and decided I'd try my hand at using/writing only original material so no one can claim copyright. OH WELL. Alphabet Class A (GOOGL:NASDAQ) tat on my forehead like I can forget that Google runs global info flow 😂

i really like how you up the chorus in this song. and you do the similar thing on the bridge. its the passing of a 7th between the first 2 chords. i was threatened with a lawsuit after publishing an article about a drum class for kids because the mother of one of the kids in the class didnt like her son being in the picture. i removed the picture for the on line version but there was nothing to be done about the print editin and she relented.

I can see why you might hesitate - never really thought of that. Love the chorus - the melody and vocals for when you sing "I have loved, and I've been loved" and "Tried to understand what Life's made of" gives me chills! Could listen to that all day!

This has so much truth! I still can't understand why YouTube took down that video! I really love this one!
