Light Go Out (Cola's Song)

by @sammiall

Liner Notes

Last week was very rough – my husband and I went with our girlfriend to have her cat put to sleep. Only three years old, she’s had him and his sister since they were babies, & all they have ever known is a world with each other and with her as their Cat Mom. While his sister is hale and hearty, he has had a lot of medical issues, to the point where for months he’s been medicated all the time and at the vet more often than not, and was weak, spiritless…very, very few moments of feeling good or thriving. She realized she was holding onto him in an unhealthy and unhappy life, and that’s not what any cat should have, so we went. As a very caring staff allowed him to let go peacefully in her arms, I spent the entire time holding his gaze, doing the slow eye close with him. So many tears. And I came home and did not write for two days, feeling too much for words. #catloss

Lyrics

Light Go Out (Cola’s Song)
~ Sammi ~

I watched the light go out in a pair of knowing eyes this week
Two long silent nights ago, and he wasn’t sleeping
He knew the moment of turn the corner and his spirit just let go
He’d been waiting long for this to come about
So hard and so right sometimes to let the light go out

Days we hold on endlessly, the waiting and the why
What is the reason for holding on, past our time to die
Feeling the love wash over us, and still we howl the cry
This hurts too much____ do you love me enough

To say it’s time to cut the cord and walk that plank of choice
Decisions carry their own weight, and still I hear your voice
The other rocks herself to sleep and will not understand
Frailty that is only filled with pain______
So hard and so right sometimes the letting go remains

Days we hold on endlessly, the waiting and the why
What is the reason for holding on, past our time to die
Feeling the love wash over us, and still we howl the cry
This hurts too much____ do you love me enough

To let me go my way alone to where you cannot follow
To let go of my tiny weight and the burden of your sorrow
You gave the best world I could know, you made my life a stone
Something safe to hold on to______
So hard and so right this time the letting go of you

So hard and so right sometimes to let the light go out

Wow this is so powerful in the emotion it conveys with relatable feelings and so poignant in the tenderness and insight you convey. Your lyrics develop the sentiment well and the melody carries it to tug on the heartstrings.

A heartfelt write and delivery. We've been there a few times as well and the losses have always hit my wife hard.

I really like your singing voice, and I also like how even though the lyrics are so so sad, the uke strumming makes the song a celebration of life and love, too.
I read the lyrics first and was deeply touched (I've been there with a dog). I'm glad you created such a wonderful musical setting.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Just yesterday I got a kitten to keep my aging dog company and after only one day of knowing the creature I would be devastated if something was to happen to her.
I find the song heartwarming, touching and sincere. "So hard and so right" really sums up the situation when the decision has to be made. Very sad lyrics but the tune of it gives out a feeling of acceptance. Well done.
