One More Orbit Of The Sun

Liner Notes

Prompted by this week's Ukulele Underground challenge, to mention your month of birth in a song. There's plenty of great songs that mention January, but they do tend to be a bit miserable. So I've tried to come up with something a bit more positive. Something of a hymn to celebrate a new year. The chorus comes from a thing that happened a few new years ago. Sometimes up here we're lucky enough to be able to see the Northern Lights, and of course because I'm that sort of person, I'm subscribed to a service that notifies when there's solar activity that makes them likely. One new year's eve, I got an alert while we were in the pub at a party. So, obviously, the only reasonable thing to do after the bells at midnight was to walk to the beach away from the town lights, and see if we could spot anything. And we did, and stared at the sky for... a while.

It's a bit of #ukulele #folk #fuc and is of course a totally appropriate song to be singing in July :).

Lyrics

Christmas is over, the days are really short
Everybody's freezing, at least in the north
The earth has just completed one more orbit of the sun
January's not supposed to be any fun

You're making resolutions to get yourself fit
To give up drinking, and other things to quit
They tell us that Blue Monday will leave us all depressed
But that's a load of tosh and so is all the rest

So with the northern lights shining in the midnight sky
We frolic with the snowmen as we wave last year goodbye
Planning for the future and reflect on what was done
As the earth sets off on one more orbit of the sun

Back to real life after a fortnight's holiday
Maybe I should try to lose a little weight
But with my birthday coming up I think it's only fair
To make my resolutions at a different time of year

And with the northern lights shining in the midnight sky
We frolic with the snowmen as we wave last year goodbye
Planning for the future and reflect on what was done
As the earth sets off on one more orbit of the sun

With the northern lights shining in the midnight sky
We frolic with the snowmen as we wave last year goodbye
Planning for the future and reflect on what was done
As the earth sets off on one more orbit of the sun
As the earth sets off on one more orbit of the sun

I can relate to all of this, especially the time to make resolutions regarding weight. Very positive vibes of this uke song.

The song was charming, then the band and the bgvs came in and it just sparkled. The accordion solo is the perfect touch.

I love this, especially as I'm also a January birthday! I'm really into songs that are of a particular time of year.

Something to make the dark a little more cheery is very welcome and this song can do that nicely. Good stuff.

I know it's fashionable to describe a year as an orbit of the sun, but this makes it sound like a jolly journey. I've only experienced a single white Christmas, but it was an utterly magical time for me. With the Christmas markets, mulled wine, and blankets of white snow, the cold didn't bother me anyway. This song brings it all back with joy to spare.

Uniquely among 5090ers, It's cold here at the moment (middle of winter at the 42nd parallel south), but it's a dreary, almost liminal sort of time of year. Something to be endured until spring comes in September. This is a far more pleasant sort of freezing.

Lovely song, just a joy to listen to! Great title as well. Wonderful flow to it and a killer chorus! Accordion really brings it home
