It Only Hurts If I Sit Still

by @dzdandcunfsd

Liner Notes

I spent the better part of three hours getting my DAW to work late last night/this morning, and about 20 minutes to record this once it was working again. No idea what kind of operator error broke it, or what I did to fix it... I really have a love/hate relationship recording with a computer.

Lyrics

Some mostly inaudible and incoherent ramblings bitching about my sore back.

@brisk

The production sounds really cool - the swirly, whirliness is great. Almost reminds me of those fever dream "secret" tracks on Nevermind and In Utero - which are some of the best aural chaos going in my book.

Psychedelic guitar slide sounds with blues and country blends--genre shifts! Creative. Cool. Chill. You've created a vibe to get lost in!!

You seem to capture musically very very specific things, things that are usually not able to really be captured musically.
I dunno if that sentence makes sense.
But what does make sense is that you captured how my body is feeling right now. No sore back for me, but sore arms, shoulders and chest as I have good ol' DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) from not properly stretching after working out.
The strained guitar bends are what I imagine my muscles and joints screaming when I tried to force them out of bed in this morning. Your notes sound like they are complaining, and the drums are TRYING to get on with the day in a normal manner but are being forced to slow waaaaay down to the aching muscles' speed.
And this is all just trying to sit upright on the edge of the bed this morning.
It only hurts if I move, which is the opp of what your title and song is about...but its still all about hurt and you have created a Webster's definition in music form for that word.

What an intro. Love some good noise from pickups at the right place. And now I’m finding myself in a whirlpool of weird sounds and it keeps swirling and spinning and oh, what the hell did you put into my drink?! :D great job

@phlex

sore back is something i can relate to, especially after trying to work on a computer. that's some crazy warping of sound there - sounds like what you'd hear at a sci-fi ocean resort. i was totally expecting some human voice to tell me the time, but all i got was some real funk flow. suspenseful and awesome!

@wacha

I love the groove the bass creates when it comes in and that dreamy guitar does it for me every time! There's a laid back badass feel to this that I really like, really nice job!

I've embraced the recording on the computer but will admit that sometimes it does feel like you can spend more time fighting with it than creating.

I feel like there’s a storm and a rainbow happening all at once. Unbridled chaos with that glimmer of hope shining through in its creative glory! Much respect for this number

@fuzzy

Yup, so glad you're back with your bendy guitar wonderfulness!!
Sore backs are a bitch, right?!?
Blew mine out while delivering paint at a paint factory as a teen.
Been bothering me ever since.
Anyway.
I'm loving the mellow guitar trying to hold its own against the chaotic onslaught.
I look forward to hearing more of your tunes for sure!

Boy is this a big ‘ol sound. Is that the shovel? I love that thing, whatever is making that sound. Low tempo drums are heavy. I am in a big heavy mood now with a side of whimsy.

@djtjb

So I listened a few times on my phone, but finally got up out of my funk and made my way to the computer to listen on the good stuff. And lo and behold, what a soundscape. The recording is so clean yet so chaotic. I think I just might sit here and listen a few more times!

Some cool back and forth swirls give this the feeling of being on the edge of losing control.

I like the tone of that electric guitar and all the off-kilter stuff going on in the background. This is the sound of a blues guitarist in Hawaii being turned inside out inside a funhouse room of mirrors. Weird, atmospheric and a pleasure to listen to!

[avatar]

this has big sonic youth vibes but the main guitar just bobs along real nice. i heart you dzd.

[avatar]

Glad you got everything fixed to come up with this! This completely encompasses the ebbing flow of back pain and then getting some relief and then it coming back again. Excellent work!!

[avatar]

love the chilled vibe of this despite so much chaos mixed in with it. i was grooving along and found the overall effect really relaxing, i guess regarding your back the noisy guitars are the pain and the picked guitar is like a soothing painkiller washing over it. nice track.

[avatar]

Hooray for sonic scapery and glad the DAW cooperated! Sorry to hear of the sore back though 😬

[avatar]

Cool track, it starts out a bit sunny and then when the noise and drums come in things really great interesting. Nice mix of sounds here!

@cblack

Ha! I'm having DAW troubles too. Have sent an email. Hopefully they can help.

This song was lovely. A mix of crisp and clean, with chaotic swells. It just works. I could easily hear this on the sort of albums I listen to.

I like it. 😀

@sbs2018

Yes, I, too love those slippery guitars. The title is hilarious!

[avatar]

When the drums are coming in sound like you got the hang of it, ready for another range of songs this summer and then it all starts flowing. It sounds really cool, I like that squeaky sliding guitar and the practicing feel of it all. Great start!

@wolfkier

Yep, that's the feeling!.... soundtrack of my head right now....
I'm sure your DAW lives in constant terror of being abused by you and it's little wonder it seizes up when you click open new project. LOL.
Well done, Nailed it.

[avatar]

i like these slippery guitars sliding all over the picked out notes.

[avatar]

haha love the zany guitar work on this track! 😄 what a great way to start off the 5090 season!

[avatar]
@yam655

This was fun! You packed a lot of sounds in to just a 20 minute recording session. That's excellent!

[avatar]
@mctown

I like the mixture... like a band playing on a bandwagon with the dark forest screaming from the ditch.

[avatar]

You captured the feeling I have waking up every morning - well done LOL ! Glad you got your DAW working again - I hate it when that happens.

[avatar]

Always interesting and unique…

[avatar]

I love that I NEVER know what to expect with your tunes, except the unexpected. A wonderful kaleidoscopic start to your 50/90! Great contrasts in the dynamics and treatments of the instruments.

[avatar]

Some really cool sounds in there! Sounds like a movie song in a sort of futuristic world! I love the odd slurred chord! Nice start song!
