A Life of Unfulfilled Dreams

Liner Notes

I saw the forum 'Lonely Gear' challenge, and decided I would dig my Seagull Merlin out of the closet (quite literally), as I can't remember the last time I used it. In fact, when tuning, (it was WAY flat), I tuned it incorrectly, but the song materialized form that!. Usual tuning is C-G-C-C (it's a 4-string similar to a mountain dulcimer), but I tuned it C-F-C-C. Also pulled out my Kala baritone uke and Luna Tatoo concert uke for this one.
Length-wise, it's 12 seconds too long for the 'short song' challenge, but I didn't want to cut the outro!

Lyrics

A Life of Unfulfilled Dreams Ā©2022 Michael J Birch

So dark and scary, Iā€™m holding my breath
Exploring into the darkest depths
Of the closet that is my mind
A long forgotten memory
A melody in a minor key
Never know what I will find

Happiness, sadness, everything between
A myriad of lifetime scenes
Thunderstorms, sunlight, never what they seem
A life of unfulfilled dreams

Happiness, sadness, everything between
A myriad of lifetime scenes
Thunderstorms, sunlight, never what they seem
A life of unfulfilled dreams

I came to this one because I have a Merlin in a closet too. :) But the words and tone are excellent, and I love what you've done with the vocals.

Such lovely string sounds! A delightful, bittersweet song. I love it!

Lovely, heartfelt lyrics and vocal thereto--very good job on this. Love the sound of your "lonely instrument"!

Nice one Mike. I especially like the "never what they seem" following the list of emotions and natural phenomena. It makes you ask. "Ah, then what are they?" Instant philosophical dilemma. šŸ˜‰ Super vocal too. šŸ‘šŸ½šŸ‘šŸ½šŸ‘šŸ½

I'll have to dig my Merlin out now. I wrote quite a few songs on it when I first got it, but it hasn't seen my fingers since COVID.

Great sound from the Merlin here. Maybe I should dig mine out. A lovely, catchy little song, that packs a lot of life into less than two minutes.

this is such a joyous explosion of varied string sounds and smooth pop vocal that it seems this life has seen many of its dreams fulfilled

Lovely! Really nice strumming and poignant lyrics!

this one grabs you from the off, your vocal change and space is very Cohen. top song all round one of my favs so far!

Very distinctive sounding and the lyrics are great. On the topic of tunings, I've just heard Mick Jagger select a Buddy Guy song (for a radio show) and comment that Guy had used an alternative tuning on the song which helped make the song stand out

I really love the chords and your strumming style. This is such a great lil' song highlighting the breadth of human experience <3

nice song -reflective and really creative- and I had never heard of this Merlin guitar thing- now I'm curious what I could do with one!

Cool song. I have a Merlin too that I normally tune D-A-DD. I should reconsider the tuning. The lyrics are a bit wistful, yet the instrumentation sounds happy.

When you break into the harmonies, it made me smile. This is a delightful, if melancholy, retreat from the sounds I usually pick to listen to. Your playing on the Merlin is excellent, and I wouldn't have guessed it's been in a closet!
