The Next Best Time

Liner Notes

I saw a Yamaha GL1 #guitalele in a real live music shop the other day and I had a go at it, and it was clearly going to be loads of fun so I had to have it. I don't really know how to play it yet so I thought the way to learn would be to write a song that let me practise changing between a few chords! As long as it's only C, F, G and Am for now.

So, here is that song. It's a bit of a throwaway, to be honest and the recording involves a lot of flailing and fumbling, but there might be something in the general idea of trying to learn stuff as an adult.

Let's see if I can play it a bit better by day 90 :).

Lyrics

You say that you must be far too old
You can't teach an old dog new tricks
But who says you can only have fun with
Stuff you learned when you were six

Well I don't care about being a pro
Don't want to be a star
So I might as well have a crack
At this comically small guitar

And though the best time to start might be when you are a kid
The next best time is now
The best time to start might be when you are a kid
But the next best time is now

I think of all the skills I've learned
And all the games I've played
Every talent I've practised
All the things I've made

There's only so many hours in the day
So if I'd started long ago
There'd have to be something I'd not have done
One more thing I didn't know

And though the best time to start might be when you are a kid
The next best time is now
The best time to start might be when you are a kid
But the next best time is now

It's a great message, and you already make the new instrument sound good.

(As someone who started playing guitar at 52, I consider myself something of a poster boy for this idea. :) )

The guitalele sounds great and your playing does too! I like how it inspired your song. I really like the message in your song, and it is also so lovely and uplifting.

Your playing sound pretty good to me! You're getting me thinking that maybe I need to get one! Love the sentiment of the song that it's never too old to learn new things.

a great song to encourage everyone to learn an instrument, no matter how okd or young they may be. quite a fun listen in its own right.

Delightful! Songwriting is so much fun and this song is spot on about it. Love it!

Love the sentiment of this song! Creating music in my DAW gives me so much pleasure I feel like a kid playing!
