I'll Let You Into A Secret

Liner Notes

I tried writing a song about imposter syndrome during FAWM, and I finished it, but I don't really like the result. So I thought I'd have another crack at it.

This is from the perspective of a more senior person who's been there and eventually realised that if you're doing anything at all complicated or responsible, nobody can honestly say they have all the answers, and if anyone claims they do then they're probably either up to something, or just don't realise that they're not as good as they think they are. I think the narrator is an exaggerated version of myself.

This didn't seem to need any more than a concert #ukulele and voice. Another bit of #folk for the #fuc.

I wrote this in 3/4, but it didn't feel right, so it's in 4/4 now. "Wing it and hope for the best" is also my attitude to 50/90 :).

Lyrics

You worry that you'll be found out
You worry that you don't belong
You worry one day you'll stop getting away with it
One day you'll find that you're gone

Everyone else has it sorted
Everyone else seems to cope
Everyone's planned for the problems they're handed
But you think you haven't a hope

Well there's something that I've got to tell you
There's something that you've got to know
While it looks like I know what I'm doing
As long as you don't look too close

I'll let you into a secret
That just like all of the rest
I haven't a clue what I'm doing
I just wing it and hope for the best

You wonder why you are in charge
You wonder if anyone checked
Surely a grown up is going to show up
Before everything is a wreck

Well I'll let you into a secret
That just like all of the rest
I haven't a clue what I'm doing
I just wing it and hope for the best

And you'd think when the world is in crisis
There'd be someone who knows what to do
But you just have to see those who call themselves leaders to
Realise that isn't true

Still maybe some day in the future
If we teach and learn and progress
There'll be someone who knows what they're doing
To get us out of this mess

But beware of the ones who are sure
That they've got everything sussed
If they think that they have all the answers
They're probably not to be trusted

There's something that I've got to tell you
There's something that you've got to know
While it looks like I know what I'm doing
As long as you don't look too close

I'll let you into a secret
That just like all of the rest
I haven't a clue what I'm doing
I just wing it and hope for the best

A fun uke song! "wing it and hope for the best" - excellent mantra!

Great feel, so charming and upbeat. Wing it and hope for the best, that’s my entire life basically.

This song is the opposite of Dunning-Kruger syndrome, the narrator knows what he lacks.

this is great, love the lyrics, love the ukulele playing so much to like about this!

you do such a fine job of laying out one of the biggest problems facing workers who know their jobs when an incompetent manager is installed above them who screws everything up. and this syndrome repeats itself in so many situations, from puppet presidents like the current president in the united states who take their orders from nefarious billionaires to the lunkhead coach of the baeball team who puts in an inferior pitcher at a crucial point in the ninth inning and loses the game.
