I Just Can’t Figure

Liner Notes

@mikeb - Geoff's a prolific lyric writer, who I know from the Muse as well as FAWM, and I've done at least one collab with him, I'm sure, but this is my first 50-90 collab. Just nylon string guitar, piano and strings seemed the right choice.

Lyrics

I Just Can’t Figure © 2022 Geoff Matthews and Michael J Birch

It's sort of intuition
Like I knew it would go wrong
Sentinel to delusion
Is that a little too strong?

I love a golden summer
When the winter's far away
Raindrops on a petal
Never last, they never stay

I just can't figure
Why you left
I just can't figure
Well more or less
I put my all in
So why'd you go
I just can't figure
Don't you know

How careless that I lost you
Like I've misplaced all my sin
I read the game so badly
Thought I had the chips to win

But roulette has a habit
When it's spinning black and red
Of emptying my feelings
And draining all my head

I just can't figure
Why you left
I just can't figure
Well more or less
I put my all in
So why'd you go
I just can't figure
Don't you know

I'm sorry
Sounds so hollow
I'm sorry
Sounds so weak
I'm sorry
That you gave up
Turning to the other cheek
I'm sorry
I was stupid
I’m sorry
And this is all on me
I'm sorry
For the upset
I know you need your sanctuary

I still can't figure
Why you left
No, just can't figure
Well more or less
I put my all in
So why'd you go
I just can't figure
Don't you know

I just can't figure
What went wrong
Did you see through me
All along.

Very lovely collaboration! The lyrics feel so sincere and raw. The music is a nice fit and the vocals exhibit the sorrow and regret beautifully. I enjoyed the listen very much.

This is a great collab. Lyrics and music matching perfectly. Great vocal delivery, Mike, and a cool compositional interpretation of Geoff's always artful and emotion packed lyrics.

Good choice on the strings in this. They flesh out the production without it becoming all about the arrangement (great though it is) instead of the lyrics. And the writing in this is really good; it deserves to take centre stage. "I'm sorry sounds so weak" is an interesting framing of the relationship being examined. Really good collab, folks.

Brilliant lyrics and music, very truthful, sincere, very relatable. I love the singing, so beautiful and shows the vulnerability so well. Beautiful instrumentation. Very nice collaboration. You are a great team.

Great melody and I love the strings as a setting for another solid lyric from Geoff. I love those last two lines. There's something husky in your voice, Mike, that works so well for this.

"How careless that I lost you."--Great line! I love the strings and the harmonies. Very smooth. And "turning TO the other cheek" is brilliant! Wish I'd thought of it! Great collab!

the finger picked intro is pretty and the strummed rhythms propel the song nicely. effective use of the strings when they come in and the subtle piano is a good touch. the lyrics are very good in describing that common conundrum one is in when a lover leaves for no apparent reason, and your vocals communicate that situation very well.

great collab Michael and Geoff! lovely arrangement which fits geoff's lyrics perfectly. one of my fav songs so far. great job!

Nice musical arrangement to well constructed and cohesive lyrics. Musically, I liked the delicate guitar that came and went a few times throughout the song, including right at the end. That was a nice touch.

Lots to like in the lyric, "sentinel to delusion", hm, what's that? It's interesting. The golden summer. Someone whose lost but is misplaced. No ill will there, maybe they'll turn up later. Between the couch cushions or something.

Nice harmonies, nice arrangement there.

Oh, and the strings (string machine). Cool.
