You don't get Rid of us so Easily

by @berni1954

Liner Notes

This song harks back to the days when my then home was open house for a group of drifters. I thought I was living the hippy dream, but I was really being totally abused by a bunch of freeloaders. In the end I had to leave myself to get out of the situation.

Instrument: Kala Tenor Guitar (Standard Tuning)

See you at FAWM 23 with a bit of luck

Lyrics

(C) Bet you thought that you were finally free
But you (G) don't get rid of us so easily
I (C) know we said we'd only be here for a week
I'm a(F)fraid that promise was (G) rather ob(C)lique
So, (F) here's the good news we're sticking around
You're (C) loving this update, doubtless, I am bound
Your (F) welcome's been so warm we decided to stay
For at (C) least another month come this (G) coming Fri(C)day

(C) You've been such a help, such a good friend
You (G) helped us in a jam, you're our means to an end
(C) You provide the food, we never even wash a plate,
And (F) if you think we'll help you, you've (G) got a long (C) wait
We (F) lie around all day never give you any peace
Your (C) privacy these days is on the decrease
Ad(F)vantage will be taken, we assure you of that
Re(C)member it says "Welcome" on your (G) front door (C) mat?

(C) We've smoked all your weed and drank all your booze
We (G) know your generosity is there to abuse
(C) We're fellow hippies, we won't stick to no rules
You'll (F) never kick us out, that'd (G) be "un(C)cool"
We've (F) designs on your girlfriend, I'm sure you won't mind
If we (C) ever do depart, we won't leave her behind
To (F) see the back of us you would give an eye tooth
And we (C) don't even like you, to (G) tell you the (C) truth

(C) Bet you thought that you were finally free
But you (F) don't get rid of us so (G)easi(C)ly

Loved the last line in the last verse - had me literally laughing, and especially the finger at the end!

Man, when you've got the voice, the song, and that great sounding tenor guitar, what else do you need. So many lines here made me small (or chuckle ruefully). You really make that little guitar sing and swing. I'd love to see how you record it. You really ended this 5090 with a bang

THe good old days. How did we survive them? And yes, hope for FAWM 23, to see you agaiin.

Here are the original lyrics so you can see how it developed after the Skirmish and when put to music.

Bet you thought that you were finally free
But you don't get rid of us so easily
I know we said we'd only be here for a week
I'm afraid that promise was rather oblique
So, here's the good news we're sticking around
You're loving this update, doubtless, I am bound
Your welcome's been so warm that we decided to stay
For at least another month come this coming Friday

It's great to know that you've got such good friends
Who help you in a jam with a means to an end
They provide you with food, you never even wash a plate,
And if you think they'll help you, then you'll have a long wait
They lie around all day never give you any peace
Your privacy from now on is on the decrease
Advantage will be taken, you're assured of that
Why, doesn't it say welcome on your front door mat?

We've smoked all your weed and we've drank all your booze
We know your generosity is there to abuse
We're fellow hippies, we won't stick to no rules
You'll never kick us out, 'cos that would be uncool
We've designs on your girlfriend, I'm sure you won't mind
If we ever do depart, we won't leave her behind
To see the back of us you would give an eye tooth
And we don't even like you, to tell you the truth

Bet you thought that you were finally free
But you don't get rid of us so easily

Yowch, yes, this sort of thing happens doesn't it? On lots of scales - it's good to be kind, of course, but sometimes people can take advantage of that. See also: taking a role in a voluntary organisation then never being able to give it up! Nice write.

Dang, this fires me up. I love that you were there to help and offer kindness. So sorry it wasn't returned. This is a great write. It is a cool story and an amazing take on the prompt. Peace :)

Definitely conjures that abuse a friend roulette wheel that most of us has surely experienced in the past, although maybe not to this degree. I like that you start from the perspective of the.. erm, no longer wanted guests.

Oh, you've nailed the mindset of this particular crowd perfectly. Some great lines - the doormat bit, designs on your girlfriend, generosity is there to abuse. Well done weaving these in. I appreciate you staying up to write and understand not wanting to anger the neighbors. I'll check back later to see if you've added a demo!

Yeah thats a tricky one, some people will always abuse goodwill! But you have to find a way to breakthough, i am sure you know. You cant stop because of bad apples but yup theres a time to withdraw and rebalance. Happened to most of us to some degree! Very good write!
