Lyrics

V1
Sister Bernice Margaret
honked out marches
on bass clarinet

while Sister Elizabeth Mary Sue
played breathy scales
on her flute

Sister Grace Prudence Ann
bellowed out hymns
on the church organ

as Sister Maria Martha Lou
strummed happily
on her lute..

playing in the dining hall
for anyone at all…

C
it was a quite a
cacophony
at the convent
every Thursday
after dinner

it was a quite a
cacophony
at the convent
that scared away
every sinner

V2
Sister Therese Veronica
blew soulful blues
on harmonica

while Sister Michael Mary Jo
picked out bluegrass
on the banjo

Sister Moira Angelina
squeezed out jigs through
a concertina

as Mother Mary Ann Jerome
pounded ragtime keys
on the piano….

playing loudly and off-beat
to confused tapping feet

C
it was a quite a
cacophony
at the convent
every Thursday
after dinner

it was a quite a
cacophony
at the convent
that scared away
every sinner

B
cloistered vows of silence
guided all their ways
no talking was allowed
except for mass
when they prayed
but after dinner before vespers
the town could hear them play
on instruments that spoke
those words they could
never say

C
it was a quite a
cacophony
at the convent
every Thursday
after dinner

it was a quite a
cacophony
at the convent
that scared away
every sinner

Until the bridge, in my mind I was going to add Sister Ma Therese on the Piano Accordion (she was my dad's sister) - but she wasn't in a silent order, she was in a teaching order. She was about 4'10 and her accordion was enormous! The convent life was a great way for a working-class woman to escape the expectations of marriage and to get to see the world. She was in Ceylon, South Africa and Northern Ireland, before retiring in Liverpool.

@jeff9

This is so very clever! And what a title--who could resist?

Fun song. Easy to visualize :)

Best title ever. Now I wanna watch sister act…who am I kidding I wanna watch BOTH sister acts!!! Well done on this one it’s epic!

The verses are fun, but the killer lines are all reserved for the Bridge. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

My Dad's eldest sister Rosie became Sister Maria Therese and was in a teaching order. She taught music and played a huge piano accordion, which almost dwarfed her as she was only about Four Feet Ten.

She lived in Ceylon for 30 years, South Africa for 10, in Northern Ireland for another 10 and then retired near Liverpool (her home city).
I used to joke with her that there was conflict wherever she went to live.

As a lass from a working-class family, she would never have had such an interesting life had she followed her sisters into marriage and kids. Ah, but that's how it was back then for women, sadly.

@roddy

Nice writing. I could see this as a Disney cartoon with all the nuns as cats!

Fun, fun song that paints quite a picture! I especially liked, “that would scare away any sinner!” 😀
