I started writing this lyric on the day that the news broke that the Queen had died. The thought occurred to me that, although it was a national day of mourning, there must have been some people who fell in love on that day. And they'd always look back on that day with warm feelings, while tinged possibly with a bit of guilt at feeling joy from a sad day. Could also apply to 9/11 or any other day that is associated with sadness and loss.

Could maybe work with piano arrangement?

Lyrics

Sad Day But I’m Happy

(Verse 1)
We were sitting on a park bench holding hands
Earlier we’d found a beach and picnicked in the sand
The sun was shining just for us and we were busy making plans
That’s when the news came through and swept sadness across the land

(Chorus)
It’s a sad day but I’m happy
Because I’ve found love
I know the world’s in mourning
But we’ve found love

It feels wrong to say it
But I can’t deny my heart
Was just our fate to meet
When lives were torn apart

(Verse 2)
When we heard the news we hugged and held each other tight
We kissed and shut out the pain, watched stars shoot in the night
I know it should have felt leaden but my heart was feeling light
And as I gazed into your eyes everything felt right

(Chorus)
It’s a sad day but I’m happy
Because I’ve found love
I know the world’s in mourning
But we’ve found love

It feels wrong to say it
But I can’t deny my heart
Was just our fate to meet
When lives were torn apart

(Bridge)
I know we’ll be reminded each and every year
I’ll try to look solemn and maybe shed a tear
But I’ll know

(Chorus)
It’s a sad day but I’m happy
Because I found love
I know the world’s in mourning
But we found love

It feels wrong to say it
But I can’t deny my heart
Was just our fate to meet (and fall in love)
When lives were torn apart
