I love 4-track challenges, but I don't have a casette recorder. So I thought I start a #digital_4track. Maybe more people will follow and I group them together.
It's a game of add-a-track, working like this:
A creates the whole song structure with an instrument of choice
B receives the track from A and adds a track with an instrument of choice. They send the mixdown to C and the individual track to the producer.
C receives the mixdown from B, sends the individual track to the producer and the mixdowm to D.
D receives the mixdown from C and sends the individual track to the producer.
The producer is a member of the team who mixes all stems and is allowed to apply some effects like EQ, compressor and reverb. They upload the song with all tagged as collab.
- ALWAYS record and export from start.
- The starter should leave 4-8 bars as count-in.
- Export in the file format the producer needs.
- Play on click and send BPM information to your successor and producer.
- Share chord sheet or MIDI with successor and producer.
- Send tracks via one-file-hosters or cloud storage
- Change song structure, chords or tempo
- Use samples you don't own the rights for
- Record more than one instrument / VST. Double tracking is okay when it's one instrument, please sent stems individually.
- Send files via e-mail
@nadine I'm not the strongest mixer in the world, honestly, but I'm happy doing anything. I think the best part of these challenges is that I don't get to pick and choose my roles, I just find a way to add my own thing to something completely outside my control.
@neverquitjeff I put you into tape 4. I'm sure, somebody could help you on technical issues. Just start a thread or ask somebody who uses the same software. Not here, please, this thread is only for organising groups.
@nadine no name yet, slightly fearful @lowhum will take one listen then pretend they've not received it. Done several 4-track tapes but never started one before, and found it it a more . . . . . pressured/self critical process than I had expected.
Though very excited to see where the others take it and how they interpret what I've done.
Short and friendly reminder for:
@onceandfuturegabi , @lemonsmoke , @lowhum, @neverquitjeff and @w1n Please finish and send your digital 4 track recording until August 14 to your successor. If you cannot make it, forward the files from your predecessor to your successor, thanks!
... and post here when the chain moved, so I can track and push people!
Asking the producers @spirulence , @jimdgreen , @andygetch - I fear your digital 4 track chain is stuck. If you haven't received tracks of those with the arrow, I recommend to change the order of your chain and send the current mixdown and information to the successor. Please let me know, if you do, so I can update the tracking post.
@ductapeguy did you receive something from @w1n ? If not, would you be up to start the chain or join another?
Next switch should happen around August 28 if you want to get this collab done.
@nadine thanks for keeping this moving! I posted a soundboard message to @wobbiewobbit with a link and basic music info for Tape 4 'structure track A'. Based on quick searches, neither of the other two participants in Tape 4 have posted in four weeks. I am wondering if at some point substitutes may be needed for people who do not respond and who are no longer active?
@andygetch I do the following. TAPE 4 is now to @wobbiewobbit and I hope you get some responses from @neverquitjeff and @w1n until beginning of next week. Are they still in? When do they have time? Andy, please decide according to their responses (or silence) about the order or re-staffing of your chain. You're the only one who has or will have all individual tracks.
I keep track of the overview and track the hand overs. By the end of August we all should see if chains progressed, stuck or have lose ends. Maybe I can mend some together or we have a waiting list.
Good idea, @ductapeguy .To be honest, I also thought about dissolving one chain to fill the gaps of the others. I'll put you on the waiting list to keep track that you're okay with regrouping. I'll know more by the end of next week and come up with a plan.
@spirulence Thanks. I've changed the order of your chain, so @jlampson is next and receives the current mixdown from you to add a track in the next 2-3 weeks. If we hear something from @lemonsmoke until next week he's in, otherwise I fill that gap.
I put @dreamscuba and @tuneslayer into the waiting list. I'll draw new positions end of next week when I have clear status of all chains.
@lemonsmoke - I'm not sure if you've had a chance to send things over to me yet but wanted to check in. I didn't see anything in my spam folder that shouldn't rightfully be there so just wanted to make sure I don't miss it when it comes in!
I've reordered and regrouped ALL chains, so please take a look into the list at the beginning of this topic. TAPE 3 and TAPE 5 has been resolved, because I haven't received the status of the producers. Starting a new tape would be too much stress. If you're on position 2 or 3 in the list, the handover should happen as quickly as possible. Person 4 should get the track until September 11 and the producer should start September 25. Please post when you did your handover so I can keep track. We still have a chance to finish these 4 tracks within 50/90. Go! Go! Go! 🥁💪
I'm a bit stretched for time starting this week, but if you need another for the last chain I can do it. And I can produce if needed, as well. The caveat being I'll need to do my bits on a weekend (due to school schedule.) Maybe going last and producing?
Edit to add: I saw your update. No worries if there is no new chain.
@tcelliott I could add you to the waiting list. If some if these chains move quicker than expected we could add a 5th track but it has to be handed in until September 25 to leave some time for production.
Starting a new chain is too hectic because you may do the hand over each week. And there were only 1-2 active people left when I regrouped.
@dreamscuba - I saw you mentioned your "axe" above. Is guitar your primary and preferred instrument, or do you have others that excite you that you want to use on this? That's also a selfish question because I'm trying to figure out what I want to contribute on this track and how to best support it. Thank you for helping me with my indecisiveness! :)
Thank you, @cheslain . I'll check tomorrow and stitch together.
@outinpublicdrummer are you interested in joining our chain? If yes please drop me a mail and I'll forward the material asap. The deadline for your stem would be the 23rd (cause I need some time to mix).
@dreamscuba - I sent my part to @spirulence via email. I can't find an email listed on your profile. Can you please click on my profile and send me an email and then I'll respond with the link? Thanks!
@dreamscuba , @tuneslayer How are your tapes doing? Please try to finish this weekend so the producer has time to mix and upload before the site closes.
Tagging the producers @spirulence and @andygetch for your information.
