Website Early Access Feedback

The site looks great! I love how everything is organized and how clean it is.

I noticed a couple of things, though, that I'd prefer in a different configuration, so I thought I'd just write a post and see what happens.

These are not big issues, just small adjustments I'd love to see. :)

1. I've gotten so used to hitting up arrow on keyboard if I want to edit a message I've written on Slack and Discord, that two clicks for edit seems a bit overkill. The FAWM site has one click, but because the hover visibility, it couldn't be used on mobile. I'd love to just see a dedicated "Edit" button on my messages. One click, fast, simple. (Of course, embedded edit functionality right there on the message would be ten times better, but probably not a priority.)

2. And about the Edit page... I don't think the "Delete" button should be there. It fights against conventions and I just mindlessly pressed it because it was a button and red. Luckily, there's was a notification preventing me from making a mistake, but the dropdown delete on the message should be enough. The delete button on the edit page is redundant and a little bit confusing.

3. As I was typing this message, I noticed another thing. The Comment TEXTAREA is a bit... snug. I wonder if it would be possible to make it increase as you type more text, but I like seeing the whole message I've written in front of me. The scrollbar pops up pretty quickly if you have more than two sentences to say. And when I go to edit a message, I always have to drag the TEXTAREA bigger so that I can see what I'm doing.

Thanks for your hard work! Again, the site is looking brilliant.

EDIT: Oh, here's another thing that would be a cool addition.

4. "Reply" button on posts, which adds the user's handle into the message box. I'd adore that one. :)

So much to love about this redesign, and of course some feedback is good, so I'll share that my primary issue is knowing whether or not something is pending for me to do. If there's a feature on the horizon to give me little visual nudges of responses to me in forums, a digest I could subscribe to, or something, I'll feel better that I'm not missing anything. Rock on, all!

[avatar]

Nice clean interface for iOS. I’ll miss the forum categories while they’re on hiatus, but that’s a small price to pay for a full site revamp from the architecture on up. Well done all.

@slusk

Quick feedback for iOS:
1. The icons for "Songs" and "Forums" are missing and the one for "Fawmers" is a white "B" on red background.

2. When you are logged in and click on the "hamburger menu" to the right you get the "Search FAWM..." field, which is ok, but also "Log In" and "Sign Up" buttons, which in NOT ok ;) OTOH it's confusing to whether you are logged in or not.

Those are my first findings. Looks ok otherwise.

@slusk

(I miss my old FAWM icon. Double bass is not my forte. ;) ;) )

@nadine

I miss the subdivision of the forums. Or any possibility to bookmark a thread. When I look back at the forum activities, it will be super cumbersome to find the information.

[avatar]

@johnstaples Multi-collabs are hugely important for corpses. Thanks to our hosts for bringing this bit of functionality back to FAWM.

[avatar]

@johnstaples Everyone?

Oh, here's another thing that would be a cool addition. "Reply" button on posts, which adds the user's handle into the message box. I'd adore that one. :)

[avatar]

@johnstaples Well, since you are talking on my behalf here, I'd like to add a slight correction. Personalized avatars are not hugely important for me. They're not even slightly important. I don't care one way or the other.

[avatar]

I agree, please remove the multi-collaboration feature immediately and use the internet space it's taking up to restore our valuable profile pictures!

[avatar]

This is very odd indeed. I can see the people replying to @johnstaples in this thread, but I cannot see @johnstaples' posts!

I can't imagine calling for custom avatars to be reinstated was so controversial as to be deleted.

[avatar]

holy heck this redesign looks a bit too much like twitter, but i can get used to it! a dark theme option would be easier on the eyes for sure!

[avatar]
@cblack

@stephenwordsmith I can't see @johnstaples comments either...

[avatar]

I was wondering that myself.

[avatar]

Damn, algorithms are on FAWM as well...

[avatar]

Mystery solved: I deleted my posts! No biggie.

[avatar]
@cblack

Ahhh!

[avatar]

Low priority request, but I miss the "jump to end" or "jump to first new post" button on the forums.

[avatar]
@donna

I hope the Muse Tools will at some point be back in place. 😉

[avatar]

They're still up and running, just no link from the main site.

[avatar]
@fuzzy

Do we still have the ability to Watchlist?
I can't find it....
(And welcome back, everybody!!!)

@nadine

Editing and deleting the posts is a bit hard, the focus gets lost on current version of Firefox. And when you edit, the delete button should not be next to the "Submit", as I always expect a "Cancel" instead.

[avatar]

Nitpicky here - but are there plans to make a "dark mode" as the bright white is painful and hard on my eyes. (I'm vision impaired) If there's a trick where I can change it myself, please let me know.

[avatar]

@pearlmanhattan I wrote a quick script for Stylish chrome plugin:

html, body {
background: solid;
background-image: none;
background-color: #551;
background: -webkit-gradient(none);
color: #eee;
}

a {
color: #aaf;
}
.link-secondary {
color: #aaa;
}

.app-content {
background-color: #665;
}
container-md {
background-color: #551;
}

.list-group-item {
background-color: #ccb;
}

.bg-light {
background-color: #554!important;
}

Just create a new style and select it to apply to URLs on the domain fiftyninety.fawm.org.

It's not perfect, but maybe helps.

@nadine

@ianuarius: Awesome, thank you so much!

FYI: The code also works on Stylus plugin on Firefox, if you throw out the line
background: -webkit-gradient(none);

[avatar]

Thank you dev team for making the text field increase as you type more text in it! Works great and makes all the difference. I love it. 😀

I noticed you changed the "Delete" button to "Cancel" on the edit page. I appreciate that you changed it, but it might cause other problems. There really already is a built-in "Cancel" button in every browser. It's the "Back" button. The "Cancel" to me gives the same vibes as one of those "Clear" buttons on forms back in the 90s. It doesn't REALLY serve any purpose, but if somebody hits it by accident, they might lose 2000 characters for no reason.

[avatar]

As a dev myself, documentation almost always waits, so I get it, but a quick on-screen guide to the coloring scheme used in the forums could be helpful.

Yellow seems to be "pinned"
White appears to be "I haven't commented on this"
Green appears to be "I've commented on this"
Red appears to be "topic closed"

[avatar]

Oh, and it doesn't look like my profile has an email icon - is that something we can get added if someone has an email address filled out? Makes it way easier for collaborations. Thank you!

[avatar]

I noticed that when editing a message, the textbox doesn't resize anymore. And you can't even resize it manually. Anyone else having trouble with that?

Also, I'd really love if the side panel had a button for my profile. :)

[avatar]

I think the new site is amazing. Great work, and thank you. One thing I notice that I do a lot is to write a whole comment and then realize later that I haven't really submitted it, even though I thought I had. In some cases, I'm sure I just click away, but in other cases I think I might actually hit the submit, and it doesn't really take. Of course at the moment I can't tell you if this is on the phone or on a web browser or which browser. I'll try to pay better attention, and look to see if my comment really does post....Probably too much to ask for there to be a place that captures all the brilliant things I thought I had said.

[avatar]

I think probably what happens when I think I’ve posted is that I press return or enter when I’m done instead of submit. I like having the option to make paragraphs, so I’ll try to be more mindful.

[avatar]

On a similar note, would it be possible to bring back that cool feature where hitting "submit" doesn't stop the song that's currently playing? I'd gotten into a pattern on the old site of listening once then writing my comment as I listen again, I miss being able to send the comment when I'm done but leave the track playing.

[avatar]
@nadine

Just a tiny optional thing, but I'd appreciate if soundboard messages have a backlink to my profile when I'm looking at my feed. Same as I can click on the song where I received the comment. I always struggle where to find my profile...

[avatar]

The "who to follow" section is a really good idea, but it keeps showing me people who haven't posted any songs and, in some cases haven't been active in years - would be cool if there was a little logic in there to suggest people who've been active during the current challenge?

[avatar]
@fuzzy

For a while there we were getting notifications if we were tagged in someone's Liner Notes, but that doesn't seem to be a thing anymore.
Did that accidentally fall through the cracks?

[avatar]

Interesting quirk when using the 'winners' filter on the Fawmers list. It says there are five pages of winners but only shows one or two names per page.

https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/fawmers?page=1&q=winners

@elesimo probably not the highest priority but maybe an easy fix 😉

[avatar]

@vomvorton thanks, I'll take a look!

[avatar]

I had been missing the ability to download songs. Yesterday I realized it was just a right click menu away on the music player. Yay.

[avatar]

Me too @ductapeguy !! I think the site looks great and it is working perfectly for me now that I can download songs 😀 You all did a great job - thank you!!

[avatar]

The site is working great. Minor gripes have already been expressed. The only thing that bothers me is when I'm filling out a box, like this, a little sign comes up telling me to fill out the field and it's always right on top of where I'm writing so I can't see what I'm keying. Of course it didn't do it this time.

[avatar]

Don’t know if this has been mentioned but this site seems excruciatingly slow to respond at times. I click on something… waiting… waiting… waiting…waiting…

[avatar]

@sbs2018 yes, i'm feeling that, too.

the old site was lightweight and optimized for speed at the expense of maintainability, which made it hard to update or fix bugs.

this new rewrite is the opposite, apparently... much easier to navigate the codebase but there are some bottlenecks, and we're still learning how to try and speed things up....

[avatar]
@nadine

I have the feeling that profiles with a long comment history are slower. Maybe do some page breaks or lazy loading in the comment section?
