Best Star Trek theme?

[avatar]

Being a shamelessly nerdy composer, 🤪 one of my youth dreams has been writing a Star Trek theme.

Now that I’ve got the equipment for it, I am considering realizing this dream.

When I thought about it recently, however, I was wondering what the best Star Trek theme to aim for is?

There is the iconic 60s one, of course, but though I like it, it was never my favorite one.

My personal favorites were Jerry Goldsmith’s tunes, led by First Contact‘s https://open.spotify.com/track/1JklSH0XqRJ8UPbO2p5Qs9?si=ygQqiZjmQIiKESziI2BCnQ , and followed by Voyager https://open.spotify.com/track/4LSGNcMUgKoLPCqb1C8V7I?si=AJKtpm5VTSG-yyfjt2te6A .

What’s yours?

I'm a sucker for the TOS main title theme song, but First Contact is probably the best, most moving Star Trek theme there is. It's epic.

I grew up on TNG so undoubtedly I am biased. Voyager rules, also. And First Contact. Oh, I guess I love them all!

The TNG theme screams Star Trek to me more than anything else, though.

@toms

The Voyager theme doesn't get enough love! But the OS theme by Alexander Courage is the best, dammit! 😀

@gubna

For the soundtrack, probably I'd go with the original. Theremin! But I really only have watched TNG and Voyager all the way through. I watched Voyager probably 2 or 3 times through cause I had the discs at one point. Some really good stories. Sometimes you gotta do things the Janeway....

First Contact is amazing. I also love the sparsity of the DS9 melody. It feels like the emptiness of (deep) space. But in a contest for "best," First Contact is SOOOOO good.

@gubna There's no theremin, it's voice!

This feels a bit like choosing your favorite children, but I've got to say the later seasons of DS9 are my LEAST favorite. If only they could have gotten that rhythm track lined up properly. . . . If I was going to watch Star Trek just to relax into the theme tune - which I absolutely do - all the rest of them are pretty good for that but I think Voyager has to take the top spot. It's just so soothingly legato. Plus it helps that it's one of the more familiar ones that I've been hearing since my childhood. I like the theme song for Picard, but I don't know it in my bones yet, you know?

Sol Kaplan didn't do much work for Trek, but what he did went in and stuck. His score for "The Doomsday Machine" (an episode written by SF grand master Norman Spinrad) is the best piece of Trek music I know. And it's been used repeatedly ever since.

And @complexissimple is right; the vocalist for the theme used for the first two seasons (but not the third) was Loulie Jean Norman. She passed away back in 2005 or so.

Did you know Courage's theme had lyrics? Roddenberry wrote them so he could claim a 50% credit on the piece (a real dick move, IMO). Thank god they were never used...

What I like best about the Star Trek themes (at least the first few) is that they really encapsulate each series' premise. The excitement of TOS (the trailblazer! the brave explorers! the Space Age!) is woven throughout its theme, whereas TNG's air was lifted from the first TOS movie (and arguably put to much better use); its theme seems to convey confidence and bravery, which is meaningful considering the size of the shoes they had to fill.

DS9 (my personal favorite) had much less adventure and movement in its theme, signifying the fixed point of a space station. VOY had a little bit more forward motion, but also some retonicization to represent the fact that they were lost and trying to get back home (which the theme does to great effect).

Then over here you have "Faith of the Heart"....

I grew up watching TOS so I have a soft spot in my heart for the original theme, although by and large you can listen to a piece of music and tell whether it's connected to Star Trek or not.

This would probably be a good place to let anyone who hasn't already heard know that Nichelle Nichols passed away last week. And of course the connection to music is, in the episode "The Conscience Of The King" Nichols/Uhura sang the song "Beyond Antares".

i wanna start by saying i love every person that clicked on this post. Trek occupies a good chunk of my brain and free time...for me its Wife, dogs, Music, star trek and everything else is a red shirt (TOS)

i can say enterprise is definitely my LEAST favorite theme (although i do still love enterprise) I'm torn between TOS and DS9...TOS theme makes me more nostalgic and giddy, DS9 makes me a little more...idk, forward thinking? lol if ANYONE here wants to collab on star trek material, please hit me up, i'm working on writing a concept album called Deep Space Niners with a few other FAWMily members and would love to get some more folks in there...If you speak klingon or can do a killer impression you move to the front of the queue lol (this might be the weirdest "personals" ad i've ever written)

@valeriecox @jeustan @toms @gubna @berty38 @complexissimple @headfirstonly @carleybaer @tuneslayer @nahlej381 Thanks for your input! I experimented a lot during the past week and finally decided for this: https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/3410

OK I think we can make this a challenge for the Trekkies on here now. I was inspired by the discussion and @florianhoffman 's great take on it, so here's my show theme! https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/3890

Wow, cool! I feel honored! 😊 Should we give it a tag? #startrek? #fawmtrek? #trekcore?
