Challenge - Lonely Gear
For my fellow Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) victims...
Put together a demo that features an instrument or piece of gear (software, hardware, acoustic, electric, biological, or otherwise) that you don't often touch. Post it in the thread here and tag it #lonelygear so we can find and support each other!
This is your chance to use that one pedal that somehow never makes it onto the board, that VST that has way too many knobs, the dog next door that keeps trying to ruin your demos, or literally (or figuratively) the kitchen sink.
I'm working on a piece for this that makes heavy use of the Arturia ARP2600 emulation that I will post soon. I've not done much more than load up presets in it before, so this has been a challenge.
Does my theremin count? I never touch it...
(I'll get me coat)
This is an awesome idea for a challenge! I had no intentions of working on another song this evening but this was exactly the inspiration I needed and on top of that I got to spend the evening playing an instrument that hasn't left it's case in years, so thanks! Looking forward to hearing what others come up with.
I've never done much with my theremini other than attempting to get the cats to play it after catnip. Wait, I don't think I added the catnip last time. hmmmmmmmm. And then there's that mandolin from mexico which I've never been able to tune properly. I may still have a harmonica somewhere... and a thumb piano.
I dug out NI's "India" selection of VSTs (which I've used twice in the last two years) for this one, so I think it counts:
When things cool down a bit, I'll set the Etherwave Theremin up and record something with that. But it's way too hot right now.
count me in! I bought/downloaded a bunch of free plug-ins since FAWM this year, so there are still a lot of unused ones that I should challenge myself to experiment with before getting anything else...
I bought a Tsouras (the Tenor of the Bouzouki family, where the Bouzouki is the Baritone) when I was in Athens a few years ago, but after an initial enthusiasm I have criminally ignored it. This challenge made me want to take it down, dust it off and tune it up. It's the (arguably) harsh mandolin sound you can hear on this recording 😉
I finally unearthed (meaning I pulled it out of the desk tray it's been sitting unused for 6 months) my arturia Keystep. I've barely ever used it. Setting up a satellite recording station in my office to start messing about this week. I like having more than one recording area, so I can just be recording even if I'm not actively working on anything. I'll dig out an unused delay pedal or two as well!
Maybe my Squeeze Drum and Resonator Guitar (perhaps in the same song?).
Using two of my least played ukuleles and combining them with sounds from my very first multi-effects pedal (bought in the late 80s) the Korg AX1G - I came up with this performance of a brand new song about life in the Scots Islands and Highlands. Hope you like it.
Next my Korg AX5... I wonder...
Today, I have got out my theremini which I don't think I've used since last Feb! and even then, it was the cats who were playing it! I'm running it through the hologram microcosm and am just going to have it recording without listening to it, while I work in my office - standing desk - next to the theremini on a mic stand. I'm not going to listen to it until later so it'll be interesting what I come up with. I think I'll randomly change settings on both the pedal and the theremini from time to time.
EDIT: this ended up being a good experiment, but I want to try it when I can listen to it as I play it and not be working on the dayjob work. I'm listening to it now and it's fairly interesting. I made a few recordings and I might just comp them together as a piece.
