Chris Harris

I'm an old dude who is absolutely obsessed with music and trying to create tracks that teenage me would have loved. That's it, pretty much. Anything else that happens is a bonus.

2022 sees me taking part in my tenth 50/90. Ten of them! And every year, because I get a little bit obsessed with targets, I have written at least fifty pieces of music. If I can do it, so can you.

I live stream my latest music-making adventures from my bedroom studio—and generally get sidetracked a lot—on Thursdays and Sundays at 19:30 UTC over at
https://www.twitch.tv/headfirstonly and Sunday shows will be dedicated to Fifty/Ninety until at least the second week in October. I'm keen to use the show to share tips and tricks to help you get better results from your recording setup, so if you have any good advice, please send it my way, or just come and say 'Hi' in the chat!

I've been playing synths and electric guitar for forty years or so and I've been an Ableton user since version 8. If you want to see photos of my setup, find out what gear I use, or (god forbid) read a lengthy account of why it is that I've ended up making the sort of music I make and how I do so, it's all here:
http://headfirst.www.idnet.com/about_music.htm

My influences are many and varied, and are listed here:

@lowhum

I don't see your profile at the Rocktober site, so go ahead and make one

[avatar]
@fuzzy

Done. I'll let you know if/when "Admin" replies.

[avatar]

Dear Chris, that's a lovely comment you left me on Lights Out, thank you. And I've hardly been able to do any listening. Next year should be better.

[avatar]
@fuzzy

Would you like me to send lowhum a private message on your behalf about login difficulties at the Rocktober forum itself?

[avatar]
@fuzzy

Thanx for all of your comments and for producing so many great tunes this summer!

[avatar]
@fuzzy

I don't think of them as "apex predators", more like "the original inhabitants of the neighbourhood". After all, they were here first.

[avatar]

Thanks for listening to my 10th track :)

Indeed, very different from what I usually do. Originally, I had the usual metal line-up but it didn't work so I removed them and started building it up.

[avatar]
@fuzzy

Sent you an email about being chased by a bear!

[avatar]

Thank You!

[avatar]

Thank you for your comment on Renfield. I just watched Nosferatu and was thinking of writing my own.. score isn't the right word, soundtrack is better, to it as a project at some point. I haven't seen "Shadow of the Vampire" and I doubt I get to it soon with school and everything, but I've got it written down to check out. Thanks again.

[avatar]

When I drive from my house here in Morden to Winnipeg, a distance of about 115 km, I traverse exactly 0 hills. It's flat in a remarkable way out here. You should fly out to Winnipeg sometime to be amazed at the flatness of it all!

[avatar]
@toms

It's getting better with faces, but yeah still a long way to go. Thank you for the listens and kind comments! I will reciprocate when I can drag my sorry ass off the couch and find the energy to do something useful!

[avatar]

i know those kinds of sirens, but would never have thought to relate them to obnoxious marketing bots. Also, there is no mention in the odyssey of the sirens eating the dead sailors. considering this line, "There is a great heap of dead men's bones lying all around, with the flesh still rotting off them." it is doubtful they ate them if their flesh is rotting on their bones.

[avatar]
@sbs2018

No worries about missing Earthquake Ethel's - it's been closed since the early '90s, I think. I used to go back every year and it was always there. Until one day it wasn't. :(

[avatar]
@brisk

I never really listened to Prong, and I for some reason never listened much to Angel Dust (but liked most of the other Faith No More albums I heard). For some reason though I was really captivated by Helmet. I have no idea why. I remember seeing them at the Astoria about two decades ago, and had a good time. Come to think of it, maybe that was the last time I went to the Astoria before it became a train station... Thanks for listening. I love using Guitar Rig 6 because it is a lazy way of getting some fun guitar tones.

[avatar]
@cts

Sooooo did ya get it this time?

[avatar]
@fuzzy

The book is "Nothing In This Book Is True, But It's Exactly How Things Are", by Bob Frissell.

[avatar]
@fuzzy

I will send you an email in the next few days with all the bear-chasing details. Email cos it's a longish tale.

[avatar]
@cts

Hmm…not the Chris.B.Harris one? At any rate - you mind shooting a hello to me here: nrgproductions@icloud.com? A dragon jelly is waiting for you…

[avatar]
@cts

I sent a greeting to you, sir. 😀

[avatar]
@cts

Sweet biscuits from another planet! 100, eh? Impressive. Most impressive. So...is your gmail account still active?

[avatar]

Thanks for the comment on: Cotton Candy Morning. As far as the Synths used they were...
Casio Wk-7500: Warm Pad
Oberheim 1000: Kirkland
Oberheim 1000: Ambience

[avatar]

Thanks for the kind comments Chris, I am glad you enjoyed the song. I will take a Marc Bolan comparison any day of the week with gratitude.

[avatar]
@oswlek

Thank you so much for stopping by and checking out, "Eyes", Chris. You are far too kind. I'll be back in a bit to check out some of your stuff. :)

[avatar]
@jeff9

Wow, Chris--I'm blown away by your generous comments on three of my little numbers. I'm having a blast working with all these talented collaborators and baying at the moon like I do. Thank you sincerely, sir.

[avatar]
@fuzzy

Thanks for your comment on "A Blissful Disease".
You think you know how I built it? Let's see if you guessed right; one pitch-shifted Melodica track and two mandolin tracks. Then I ran the whole thing through my secret weapon, PaulStretch, "stretch factor" of one, "time resolution" of .9. That's it!

[avatar]

Your comments have made my morning. I even exclaimed, "hell yes" out loud to one of them :) Thanks, Chris!! I need my good headphones (not crud work speakers) to listen to your prog-rock loveliness...so glad we have through October to listen!!

[avatar]
@mikeb

Thanks for the comment on 'Alone'. I've heard that comparison to Rush before, I'm not familiar with that album.

[avatar]
@fuzzy

I appreciate your answer to my question, thank you. I knew you'd have a thoughtful reply!!
I also appreciate that it seems as if you watched that interview before answering. I found that video totally interesting and inspiring. If I figure out a delay system that works for me I think everybody at FAWM will get tired of my endless posting of delay noodles!

[avatar]
@atitlan

Re your comment on 'Is This Living?' - nothing more British than "mustn't grumble!"

[avatar]

HI, Chris, your comment on the pronunciation of MY-graine/ME-graine sent me to YouTube where I watched a 16-minute video called English Words You're Probably Mispronouncing. Not quite on point, but still interesting (pronounced IN-trest-ing, not IN-ter-est-ing.) 😀

[avatar]
@mikehex

Thanks for the listen and comment on "Lay that body down"! Yeah, it's weird how the predictions of the futurists get more outlandish, even as their previous predictions fail to materialize. Still, fodder for sci-fi and song ideas I guess...

[avatar]

Howdy, Chris! I see you haven't been sleeping away these two last months... Thanks for the Heartbreaker comment! No, as you found out, the song wasn't about Burroughs' ill-advised target practice, but the old story of the sinner walking into his own trap.

[avatar]

i saw transcendence and agree that it was terrible.

[avatar]
@sph

Thanks for the comment. You're right with the Cure association. Directly after recording it I send it to my former bandmates (a band we had from '90-'93) whether we should use it as a starting point for our ultimate Robert Smith rip-off :-)

[avatar]

Thanks for checking in, Chris. I'm still here, sort of. I have no student intern assistant this year so I have to do all the things and have nobody to delegate various and sundry tasks off to. And my wife and I were cast in a local theatre production of Murder on the Orient Express. And my sister turned me on to "Taskmaster". But I have a stack of about 20 songs I've an idea to do by the end of the month. And, being me, it's just a matter of clearing out 15 minutes here and half an hour there to get the stack dealt with.

[avatar]

Chris, I got a big kick out of your comment on Criminy, Jake! Yes, perhaps "Criminy" is an underrated word. So glad you liked the song. I thought Tuesday knocked it out of the park, and I really appreciate your comment.

[avatar]
@esc4p3

Thanks for the comments on 'trombone rock'. I subsequently did a quick collab on this with @dragondreams and he came up with a Bassier version which you may have already picked up on https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/9266

[avatar]
@janeg

Thank you for that wonderful feedback on Alien Invasive Species! The honky-tonk piano idea was @tuneslayer and I love it too. Not sure how to perform it live but will be trying soon on Zoom.

[avatar]
@marthie

thank you for your feedback

[avatar]
@jamkar

Thanks for your warm comments on my collab with Nadine. Her guitar inspired me more than you know.

[avatar]
@nadine

Thanks for your comment, Chris! I'm glad you enjoyed my little improvisation. Yes, @jamkar did a great job on the vocals 😀

[avatar]
@psyt

Thanks for the comment on Etude 53 Shadows Dancing ♥

[avatar]
@mahtowin

Who is Sam Raimi?
Thanks a lot for your comment. I am really glad and always suprised that some folks here are liking such weird stuff! Makes me happy!

[avatar]

The Q52 has quite a chunky neck for an Ibanez (so I am told) and quite similar to a C shape Fender neck profile... I found it pretty easy to get used to. The only challenge for me has been the fret markers are not so obvious as on some of my other guitars. It is very light and incredibly resonant... and I only went into the music shop to enquire about drum lessons for my wife.

[avatar]

Thank you for the comments on Thunder Rising. For gear
- guitar: Ibanez Q52 (a new impulse purchase recently. It's my first headless guitar. I really dig it).
- amp: Quad Cortex - I will have to check the patch details. I was using the freeze function to create a droning sound.
- I recorded the droning sound for 8 beats or so and looped it. I also pumped up the gain on this in the mix. I then recorded the lead guitar using the same patch (with the droning guitar in the background - freeze still on) and mixed to taste.

[avatar]

I knew you were the one to ask!
Ooooh, ok so I need to dust off my Analog Lab and see what's in there...been so long I don't even remember what it has. Hoping the Odyssey is in there. I do have the MonoPoly already and love them! And oh man...the Triton. That honestly was the first workstation I ever lusted over. Lol, I SWORE that one day I would save up enough to buy one. Never happened, but OH MY I see there's a plug-in for that, too?!?! I need to hide my wallet.
Man, I remember in your videos how cool (and honestly, kinda cozy) your studio looks..sooooo many toys!
Thanks for your info and insight, I think I'll pull the trigger on the M1 plug-in soon.
And OH MY GOSH 76 songs! Congrats on the win. Sorry I've commented on so few, I'm really failing at commenting this year!

[avatar]

Hey, I wanted to come to you since I think of you as a gear/software guru.
Have any experience with the Korg M1 plug-in???
https://www.korg.com/us/products/software/kc_m1/

I've been looking for some old school R&B sounds, kinda like Teddy Riley Used back in the day, and the M1 came up multiple times.
Was wondering if you recommend? Or if you think other plug-ins work better for that genre? My apologies if I'm asking about something you don't know about.

[avatar]

Thank you for listening to some of my songs. For my fusion extravaganza, yes, I was thinking of Rush with the change of pace.

[avatar]
@panch

Many thanks for the comment on Blackpool Landlady. I forgot to include a verse on nylon sheets - that'll be for the album version!

[avatar]
@fuzzy

Thanks for the comment, as always.
Yeah, Ted Nugent is my new hero! 😀

[avatar]
@chldomn5

cont. with that comment i made on your battle index song, i think its worth sharing this if youre not familiar with it either. its a cracking sound which i think has similarities to your song also, should you wish to listen, no pressure, whatnot whatnot!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmDNQPh0hA0
have a good day and happy 5090ing

[avatar]
@wacha

I spoke to soon! I went back in, rescanned my plugins again and now it's working! I honestly never really know how I "fix" labs but take it as a huge win when I get it up and working again.

Thanks for your advice and for following up with me!

[avatar]
@wacha

Hey, thanks for asking. So far I have had no luck. Reaper can't even see labs the to be able to try some of the other fixes. I've check all the paths and everything looks good. I'm kind of regretting downloading the orchestra now, at least I had all the labs before which I get way more use out of.

[avatar]

It's a little pocket of the prairies which, due to geographical topology has typically warmer temperatures (especially in the dead of winter) than the surrounding area. I mean, it's the difference between -40 and -37C we're talking about, so minimal, but that's prairie life for you...
Thanks for listening to Melita!

[avatar]
@mikeb

Thanks for the comments on my instrumentals. Not sure I will use any of them in my rock opera, but its fun synthing around sometimes!

[avatar]

Thanks for commenting on my "Caw-rus" song. They're great, and I loved your story about the jack-daws

[avatar]

Hi Chris, thanks for your feedback on 'Chase Him'! Correct, Heavyocity was certainly involved ~ all of a sudden everything sounds good and hyped up LOL. I used Damage

[avatar]

Always use a lot of drum compression for certain types of tracks where that is crucial to drive it along. Thanks for the kind comments Chris

[avatar]

Thanks for the comment on Tasty Nibble (https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/1783#c18650) I was tempted to call it fusion, but it's all 4/4 and there is very little that strays from the pentatonic as I recall. It's like Lil' Tyke Prog Rock.

But, glad you dug it.

[avatar]
@fuzzy

(I missed your birthday? Happy birthday!!!)

[avatar]
@fuzzy

Time for me to track down "American Cosmic", then.
Yeah, I knew about the "Close Encounters"/Vallee thing.
His books are hard to find in the wild; I've been keeping my eyes open for years and have not run across any of them. (I do all my book and record shopping at junk and second-hand stores; it's more fun than going to a "real" store cos you never know what you're gonna find!).

[avatar]
@sbs2018

Happy birthday, Chris!

[avatar]
@fuzzy

Thanx for the Comment!
I'm glad you enjoyed "Sunburn".
Here it is;
[...]
As you can see, everything is turned up to eleven! 😀
Borrowed it from a friend and I intend to make good use of it while I have it.

[avatar]
@nadine

YES this was the song. I just forgot the name, thanks! I didn't find a nice sounding electronic kit. I feel like most is 808, 909 and EDM stuff, but nothing that hits hard in an industrial or dark wave way.
I should learn how to route samples to MIDI keys, then I could try to layer like you did. When I work with electronic samples, I still copy and paste all instances.... 😥

[avatar]
@jeff9

Thanks, Chris. Glad you got a chuckle out of Cranky Old Men.

[avatar]

Hi Chris, thanks for the kind words on NCC-5090! 😊 Guess I'll leave a reprise of Kaplan's Doomsday Machine theme for a later revisit. 😁 Oh, and I will *never* write lyrics for this. 🤣 Man, I never would've thought that Roddenberry could be such an a**?!

[avatar]

Hi, Chris. So glad you got a kick out of Cranky Old Men. Jeff and I had blast with that one.

[avatar]
@toms

WHAT IS THIS PIANOBOOK THING OF WHICH YOU SPEAK OMG it's a good thing I'm a senior citizen and not still a teen living in my parents' basement! 😂

[avatar]

I've just started exploring this stuff, as a result of that video: https://www.decentsamples.com/product-category/freebies/

Thanks for listening to my 5th song :)
I hope I can bring more chugs later ^^
Very happy you loved it !

Hi Chris, thanks for your kind comments on 'The Big O'. Maybe I should have been writing orchestral music for years instead of waiting until I was 60 - but hey, no regrets, I got there in the end. A part of me I never knew existed and may never have realised if it weren't for FAWM and 50/90 (and @dragondreams )

You recently saw John McLaughlin?!?
Wow, nice!
What a fantastic guitarist!

Just finished watching that tutorial. Now I've got some interesting ideas to fool around with in Buzz. Thank you so much for pointing me in its direction.

Good lord, look at that output. How. Do. You. Do. It. Anyway, I'm checking in to see if you used the foghorn yet, because I really want to hear how you use the foghorn. 😀

I thought you'd appreciate that 😄

I know you've been delving into the rabbit whole that is modular synths & I noticed this free VST posted in the Jeskola Buzz Forums that might be right up your alley. Heck, I might just play around with it in Buzz & fall into the rabbit hole as well.

p.s. Also, I know you always love adding new toys to your VST collection.

Thank you!

Hello, Chris! Thanks for your comment on Slow Hoe!

@atitlan

Thanks for the comment on 'Now is the Only Time'. I think a lot of the time when we write lyrics like that we tend to be talking to ourselves, certainly there was a degree of self-direction in the 'you' of that song.

[avatar]
@fuzzy

No, I did not see that!
Thanx for the heads up!

@fuzzy

Thanx for your comment on and ongoing interest in "Glacier Requiem". I really enjoy working with @andygetch's cello.
Yes, almost all of the landscape around here has been shaped by glaciers as well; lots of drumlins and eskers and long, narrow, deep lakes. In fact, my house is situated on top of a ridge formed by glaciers; maybe a couple of centimetres of topsoil on the lawn and then it's all gravel, sand, and rocks.

Thanks for listening to “Things Change” and for sharing your thoughts! I appreciate it a lot.

Hey Chris, thanks for checking out Red Rocket Ride! Flo totally "kicked it" on the production! I had a blast working with him! Thanks again for listening!

[avatar]

My backing singer is me. I use a plug in called Rovee and switch male to female and adjust pitch to taste!

[avatar]

Thanks for your comments on my Lonely and Blue lyrics. Glad you enjoyed it and, yes, Incel Blues would also be a very suitable title. :)

[avatar]

Thanks for your comment on my 4th track 😀
Still working on my vocals but it's getting somewhere ^^

@nadine

Wow, thanks a lot for your helpful comment! It took me some years to develop a flow for 5/4 and 13/4, but 7/8 still feels like stumbling. I hope this knot will be solved. Next time I'm in the mood for prog, I'll try - Thanks 🤗

Thanks for the listen and comment on my collab with Geoff!

Thanks for the comments on "Words." I'm using the Platinum Reverb in Logic Pro. It's a good thing I laid down the vocals before I got Covid - now my voice is quite hoarse. But, thank goodness for the vaccines and boosters. This latest variant seems to be quite contagious - we've been very cautious but it may have been the birthday dinner at Jiko at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge - the server was awesome but she chatted with us too much and stood a bit close. Didn't think about it at the time - we've gone to other resort restaurants at Disney in the past. That's all I can think of. Going to give up inside dining for awhile now. Anyway, so sorry to hear about your friends.

Thanks for your comments on Hacker. Most who play could be categorized as hackers. It;s a fun game anyway. I think I have the old guy trophy, I'm 86,

@nadine

Thanks for your words on my "Quarterlife Blues". Playing guitar is sooo releasing and fun. Wish I knew that before! I don't have Tom Waits, but @davidtaro will rock the final recording. It's gonna be fun!

[avatar]

Thank you for the amazing comments on my 2 experimental peices! Playing with soundscapes and percussion like this isn't something I've ever done before, so I'm glad it's getting some love!

@beacon

Thanks for your comments on Sloths at the Bazaar. It's a new creative process for me, so to have someone with your experience like what I've done there is high praise!

[avatar]

Thanks for your comments on Baby, What About Me. @jibbidy34 does such a great job on everything. I was really happy when she agreed to work with me. Your comment brought me to your page and I spent about a half an hour exploring your gear videos. Very impressive setup and your enthusiasm for music shows!

[avatar]

"trying to create tracks that teenage me would have loved. " I'll remember that. So true in this direction too.

[avatar]

Thanks for the listens! The Labs range are a nice set and it was fun to give them all a moment to be included. The Amplified Cello Quartet was a good one and Guitar Harmonics had a lot of good material as well. Thanks for the space link!

@brisk

Thanks so much for yor comment on Den Building. I was proud of it when I wrote it but the words took days and days, and I'm still note completely sure what I was trying to say. I'm going to have to check that poem out. This kind of theme fascinates me, but I find it hard to understand exactly what I think about it, so I make everything opaque.

@geoff61

Chris, I've just written and posted a lyric 'It's Like I'm Born Again' I would really love it if you considered a collab on that one :-)

@candle

Hey Chris,

I'm glad you enjoyed Nostalgic Halcyon Nights. It's sort of the first time I've actually set out to make an ambient song (I've made ambient songs in the past, but they sort of happened organically). I'm glad you like the DSK The Grand. I've never tried their sax or choir, but I'll have to check those out. Especially the choir, I'm always looking for a good choir sound. Glad I could make your day with good music & new VSTs 😄

See You In The Shadows…

@geoff61

I'd love to collab with you, some of those gravelly old vocals wrapping around my words would really suit.

@esc4p3

Thanks for the comments on my track The Joy, much appreciated. Always comforting to know that I'm not entirely off on my own planet :-)

[avatar]

Thanks for the kind comments Chris, I hope you are well.

Thank you for letting me know about the missing links.
Cheers

Had to look up Gunhild Carling… oh my!!

@fuzzy

Thanx for your Comments!!
BTW, there are no effects, delay or otherwise, on "The Uncomfortable Chair", merely three straight tracks of bass guitar.
Two different tracks, one on each side and reversed (dunno if you consider "Reverse" an effect), of me alternately playing E and (I think) A Flat on the G and D strings, and then the unaltered E string right up the middle. Pretty simple, actually!

@candle

Happy 50/90 Chris! I'll be back to catch up listening to your tracks. Looking forward to hearing more & the great advice you always share with the community. Thank you for that.

And yeah, I'm planning more videos! I have a few ideas in mind, and I've got a proper camera this time. Let's see what's going to happen!
