Hypnotist

By the way - I think I had better change my "name" to Hypnotist as that's what people knew me as on 50/90 last year, and it isn't clear who I am if I stay "Super Commuter" which is what I've been on FAWM for a decade. Changing now.

I'm just a mild-mannered librarian, so please no loud noises.

(I've denoted my favourites with the old ❤️ emoji - an idea that I think I'm copying off @katestantonsings - great idea! I've not done that with any collaborations (I think several would probably qualify as my top five of this year) because I don't want to impose this folksonomy on my collaborators)

I really want to get stuck in this year. 50/90 was a highlight of my 2021. Really enjoyed writing music for other people's lyrics, which was a new thing for me.

Note to self - aim for 25 by 18th August [tick]

@owl

Thanks so much for the kind comment!

[avatar]

Wibbling and wobbling is ok. I would have passed out…

[avatar]
@nadine

Thanks for your lovely comments! I'm glad you enjoyed our songs. "Deep Heart" is the only full production I could handle this summer. I usually only upload MIDI drafts and do the magic afterwards. "I'm not angry" will get a better guitarist. I'm not there yet.

And yes, I feel like @katestantonsings and @quoththellama could sing literally everything !

So cool you know Silverchair, "Emotion Sickness" is one of my all time favourites.

[avatar]

yeah i have stuff i am "squeamish" about posting, and 5090 is perfect place for that stuff. I agree, 5090 more a boot camp, Fawm a jamboree. You get to hang out and get to know people a bit more. thanks for the comments

[avatar]

certainly not trying my patience! I was taken with the visceral head rush of the trippy sounds! congratulations on your win btw

[avatar]

Thank you so much for your beautiful comment on "A lonely flower on the road". I forgot to update my collaboration link and thanks to your kind comment I've updated it. If you have a chance please listen to my collaboration with Craig/CTS:
https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/2171

[avatar]

No problem, it's been really fun to go on that adventure/journey with you. Also, now I want to listen to Adore. Smashing Pumpkins is, I've realised, a big ol' whole in my musical education.

[avatar]

Thank yo so much for your very insightful and thorough review of A Cloud In The Sky. You pointed out things I did not consciously consider - which to me is the very best kind of review. I really appreciate it!

[avatar]
@cts

You're quite welcome (regarding Mr. Men). And I wasn't aware there was a metal version? There's a metal version?

[avatar]

Hey…thanks so much for the encouraging comments. Really means a lot to me. I hold your judgment in high regard.

[avatar]
@crisp1

Thanks for your comments on my collab with Berni, The Song!

[avatar]
@hbusse

Thanks very much for the kind comments!

@andrea

I think Eve would need a taser 😉

[avatar]

Wow. Thank you so much for listening to Am I Scared? It was a lot of fun to write. I'd been carrying around that phrase "I have her dissertation in my car" since a friend used it months earlier, A big chunk lyrics fell in place in a co-writing session, and then the rest particularly the line about the K's and L's and M's and N's came in response to hearing Gil's first pass at the music. I love that feeling of just hearing what the music is trying to say. Like channelling the spirit voices.

[avatar]
@nadine

Thanks for explaining! Except for drum fills and slides I don't use predefined patterns or MIDI. Just let my mind flow and see what it comes up with. Programming is tough sometimes, but I'm learning guitar to get rid of MIDI composition someday soon.
Thanks also for your recommendation on Helmet. I'll check them!

[avatar]

The link for Am I Scared should work now. Not sure what was wrong with it. Thanks so much for listening. https://fiftyninety.fawm.org/songs/1043

@aneil

@brisk what a fine job you have done in my mind it’s a number 1 changing the world one song at a time! Thanks for the huge effort!

[avatar]

after a second listen, i will add that the drum that introduces the second chorus is much stronger than the drum part introdicing the first one. i think you need a really strong drum break going into the first chorus. also, the guitar part is weak. ii think a stronger part that blends with the piano rather than interjects some tasty licks would be stronger. finally, a strong piano intro would immediately define the songs musical identity. the doors song light my fire had no intro at first and manzarek knew it needed something, so he lifted that bach riff and made the song a classic, simply becase the organ intro was so distinctive.

[avatar]

i dont think there is anything musically missing in take it all. it is more the tentativeness of the performance that holds it back. it needs more boldness in approach and maybe a little more tightness in construction. i remember a video of the first time prince performed purple rain live. he comes on with the knowledge that he is about to blow the minds of everyone in attendance with the greatest song ever written. and the audience feels that and by the time he breaks out the first verse, they are salivating. not that i suggest you go that far, but this song is a killer and if you boost it up a bit, it will knock the audience dead.

@yam655

Thanks for the comment. :) The lobster sandwiches were sandwiches _for_ lobsters (made of "yucky, yucky stuff" that humans generally find inedible) and not made of lobsters. Basically, it is the same way that "dog food" is food made for dogs, and not food made of dogs.

That's one that needed course correcting, though. I was like "WTF am I singing, I need to fix this ASAP." 🦀 (A crab is as close as I can get.)

[avatar]

we did not record the Marcus Aurelius piece, but you can get a sense of Billy Barnum's work in this piece from Artaud that we did for television. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHtrY1UtwNs&t=118s&ab_channel=billWhite

[avatar]
@nadine

Thank you! I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed my ragequit metal. I didn't think about this one, I just vented. Who knows maybe I rerecord when I have an electric guitar, more stamina and another ragequit.

[avatar]

thanks for the comment on 'disaster whisperer'. Funny, while I've vaguely heard of the band 'flaming lips' I can't say I've ever heard a note of theirs, as far as I know, so any similarity has to be by accident.

[avatar]

yes, i like the way we can see him thinking before he speaks. i once adapted and directed a one man show from marcus aurelius' meditations in which i tried to manifest the thought process through physical actions. the actor i worked with was in his 80's and had studied with some of the masters of mime and dance, so was adept at physicalizing mental images. we would work out a bit such as " a swan glides across a pond and is struck by lightning" after which he would deliver a line from the meditations to the audience. the total effect of the play was to show a person in the act of thinking, something andrew scott accomplishes in this monologue

[avatar]

thank you for the youtube link on hamlet. quite an original interpretation, but he seemed too much like a regular guy trying to figure out the answrs to some big questions than the hamlet i imagine. he does speak well, but i disliked his hand movements and facial expressions. i picture the scene quite differently, with hamlet beginning by preparing himself for harikari and being interupted by ophelia, to whom he addresses the speech as an explanation for his suicidal intent. i dont think he is trying to solve a problem, as andrew scott plays it. rather, i feel he has already thought all this out. the same goes for his solid flesh monologue. more unneccessary arm waving and playing it as if he is trying to solve a problem. for a 21st century hamlet, though, his reading shows intellegence, unlike david tennant's whining spoiled child of a hamlet.

The lesser-spotted thigh-slap is illegal in 22 countries. It basically involves aiming a microphone in the general direction of your crotch and slapping your thighs in a vaguely rhythmic fashion. Scandalous really.

@aneil

Feel free to express yourself however Mr Men turns out just happy for u to give it a whirl. Feel free to edit lyrics too

[avatar]

Ta for all your lovely comments - and there's a challenge, if ever there was one (where's my copy of Walker's Rhyming Dictionary...)

[avatar]
@andrea

I sent you an email with some lyrics and ideas :)

[avatar]
@andrea

Unfair or not, I like what I like 😁

[avatar]

We are good 😀 You already listened and commented on one of my songs, so I check out one of your songs. Happy music making!!

[avatar]

Thank your for your “Dancing with Travolta” appreciation. Means a lot!

[avatar]

You are very welcome. Thank you so much for your warm comment on my collaboration with Kate "I'll take a train".

[avatar]
@aneil

Hey you welcome to have a go at Mr Men I wasn’t quite finished just ran out of steam last night. We could add to it together

[avatar]
@andrea

I took a look at George Formby's "When I'm Cleaning Windows". Your song feels very similar. It's humorous and entertaining. I like your song better!

[avatar]
@andrea

I feel you are taking me to the dark side. Not a problem, I like creepy and dark -lol. I added my email in my profile.

[avatar]
@andrea

I would love to have a listen to your music and see if I could write some lyrics for it. Do you have a topic in mind for it?

[avatar]
@andrea

Bravo to you. I think most people have some embarrassing moments in their life they never want to relive or talk about. It can feel good to finally let it out.

[avatar]

I 100% recommend Slay the Spire!
I'm only a novice at deckbuilding rogue-like/lite games, but this one is quite fun. Its also pretty hard for me, but probably because I'm still learning.
Great art style to it, easy to understand descriptions for the cards, and a really nice overall feel to the game.

[avatar]

"Unapologetic openness." What a nice description of exactly what I was going for in " I Call Myself a Gardener!" Thanks for the listen and the wonderful comment. I enjoyed worked with @panch. He seemed to know exactly what I had in mind.

[avatar]

hi thanks :) here is a version of my song that has similarities, live in front of a new audience who had never heard it - starts 8.08 If I were a Baker (been doing that song live since about 1997!) https://wobbiewobbit.com/jukebox/video/live-30-10-18

[avatar]

Hadn’t thought of that - lol! Thanks!

[avatar]

You are very welcome. Thank you for sharing with me your thoughts. I believe there is no end to perfecting and sometimes perfecting a song can make it not as authentic. Your song created a very big impression on me and I meant every word I said but you are the creator and the choice of whether to work more on it or not is always yours. Good luck with your songs. I would love to hear a great successful story from you about making it hugely big. You deserve it for sure!

[avatar]
@jeff9

Oh, wow--thanks so much for the really encouraging words on I'm Always on the Defense. I'm glowing in the dark.

[avatar]

FJM… is not for everyone. But try Bored In The USA or Chateau Lobby 4 or Pure Comedy.

[avatar]

yesterday's chorus is "why she...". It only becomes really obvious when you're drunk in a pub or a wake and the whole room joins in.
Song: Collect various stuff that bears repeating. (within the track and for the listener through eternity) , repeat that stuff until just before ad nauseum, break it up with something so cool you only need to do it once, repeat the stuff that bears repeating. :)
Oh, and think like a drummer,. Never forget to think like a drummer.

[avatar]

At your leisure my friend!

[avatar]

thanks for such a fantastic comment and making my day :)

[avatar]

You are very kind, thank you. 😄

[avatar]

i think the basic melodic idea owes something to because, but i was thinking of the general construction of the whole having that abbey road quality. not that your song was like a suite exactly...it was just a feel, probably came to mind in response to the because changes..

[avatar]
@mctown

Will get you some. There are some on my page that I haven't used of yet... I think I have some interest in the Christmas one already...and the others might be a little unsteady... yell..if you want to run with one of those. I'm headed out on a couple day trip, but I will get you something. Always enjoy working on stuff.

Lol... my brain is bouncing all over...called a few co-writers in Nashvilleyesterday thenin the afternoon I attended a country show in Nashville with Barbara Fairchild and others..afternoon show..went to a Tennessee Songwriters Group show in the evening... met a manager...and an artist...did the home trip.. pitched several songs to manager and the artist..via emails that I had obtained...worked on a lyric.. checked this site... and today my brain did a lot of the same stuff at home... so I was not shocked that you worked on something else. Retired/old/unwired brain David

Thanks for the comment on Etude 35 :)

Thanks for your very thoughtful comments on The Call of the Void. Glad you liked the scenarios. I chose to do 2 for time's sake. Adding another is certainly possible. Something to consider. I am always interested in making improvements!

[avatar]

Thank you for the Bovine Stroll comment!

[avatar]
@ohljazz

Thanks for your kind comments on my sunflower song. If I were to expand it to a track for recording I would extend the solo section and maybe add some more lyrics. This gives me an incentive to do just that!

Hi Thanks for your comment on miracle man. We had a good mandela Day yesterday where people commit 67minutes of their day to acts of good service. He was a remarkable Man. i am challenged to become a Miracle Man in my own way

[avatar]

That may be the nicest thing anyones ever said to me. Very much appreciated and you’re a legend!

[avatar]

Hi @brisk. So glad you liked Broken. I agree that David Taro did a tremendous job on it. And thanks for mentioning that line you liked: "You'll find someone who's golden." Those are fun things when they just fall in your lap!

[avatar]
@mctown

Well... I seldom take my own words as gospel.. lol. If I typed it over it'd change ..if I played chords on my piano and tried to sing it ..it would change. That's why I'm not taken aback when people change things.

[avatar]
@sunfire

Thank you again on a great collaboration!

[avatar]

oh yeah i do like the Bonzos - not overly familiar with though like i think i should be, but yeah 😄

Sure, I'd love to hear it. My email is carbor36@gmail.com

Well, it's weird... you might have to use some cutters on it..David
This Box I’m In David L Graham

You can’t find a dragon Or big floppy hats
Sometimes that makes us lonely and a little sad
I remember being ten hiding out in my room
Cause I didn’t know then I didn’t have a clue

But now..maybe I do
Lost here in this fog
Looking at tribulation
Like this machine was god
Well, I think not
But I’m so boxed in
I’m so boxed in
With my friends
I’m so boxed in
With family
I’m wonderfully lucky
Cause this Box is going win
This box I’m in

They came through the circuit with hot, dreamy hurt
Caught up with all the bullies culled by all their words
I expected dying then cause I couldn’t see a new way
But love makes a big dent when it’s brought into play

So now..chorus…
Bridge
It’s been a battle from the beginning
But hate will never take the winnings
chorus

@sunfire

Absolutely! Woud love to hear what you come up with.

[avatar]
@mctown

Will do.

Re: DALL-E

Yes, I just discovered it about a month ago and am just FLOORED at how terrific a job it does. This was the first time I ever came across it and am just amazed:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fDJXmqdN-A

[avatar]

I’m in no demand…let’s do it. I liked our last one with all the back and forth and chatter in between. Don’t quite recall our process but I’m sure we’ll have fun…

[avatar]

I think we should do a collab about UEA.

[avatar]

Hey, thanks for your comment on my song 'Can We Be Friends'. Very kind words. I hope the next one doesn't disappoint! Have a great one.

[avatar]

Thanks man. I kind of had Little Willow in the back of my head, but I was preeeeeeety sure I wasn't nicking it, at least not wholesale. The idea of writing a song featuring birds is 100% copyright McCartney though, so I definitely nicked that. Look forward to hearing your next one later...

[avatar]
@wacha

Hey, thanks for reaching out! I'm pretty much open to whatever you want to wrote about. I enjoy a nice surprise to work with.

[avatar]

Lovely song! I love the dreamy mood and the way you deliver: "A hidden door." Speaking of words, are you @brisk or @hypnotist or @Super Commuter or @yeslessness? Or all of the above? Which do you prefer?

[avatar]

Can you send me an email to coolparadeeso@gmail.com so i can send you some stuff in a few weeks.

[avatar]

And i just read your Bio properly - I am between houses soon and may have limited playability! when i am in my Motorhome i might flick a few lyrics your way which you can use to mess with or not!

[avatar]
@sbs2018

Nightie-nite - lol!

[avatar]
@sbs2018

Thanks for your comment on “Nasty Lies.” Throwing myself into it was quite satisfying! :)

[avatar]
@panch

Thanks for your comment on up and down. Let's keep the martlets flag flying!

[avatar]

Thats a good pick up on that chord. I did it deliberately that way and every time i played it back I thought shall i change it or not and decided i would stay with the less obvious, but i'm still not sure !

[avatar]

Thank you for your kind comment on my movie challenge piece.

[avatar]

Yes please. I will try and finally do something with those Maybe This Love stems as a starter for ten!

[avatar]

thank you! yes i meant to mention, when i was a bus driver it was always a favourite bit when people called out that! have a great 50/90!

[avatar]

Hey Thanks for the nice comment on my song: Drag.
Looking forward to hearing some of your output this year.

[avatar]

What a splendidly kind comment on my first song (Rainy Mondays). Thank you!
